South African Music for Your Soul
Week of December 11, 2021
Concert: South African Music for Your Soul
This 1-hour concert of songs from South Africa spans the genres of traditional choral music from the rural villages; guitar-driven mbaqanga and marabi styles from the 1950’s – 60’s; Afro-jazz and popular music made famous by Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela; and contemporary songs I wrote to promote Nelson Mandela’s vision, which are a fusion of many styles. I sing and accompany myself on acoustic and electric guitars.
Screening of the film: Watch ‘When Voices Meet,” the multiple award-winning film about Nelson Mandela’s cultural ambassador, Sharon Katz. Sharon will be available to answer questions after the film and to talk about the work she is currently doing in the Tijuana-San Diego border region. Film running time: 80 minutes
Workshop on singing South African songs
Join Sharon Katz in singing some of South Africa’s most popular and traditional songs and learning the stories behind the songs.
South African musician, music therapist and humanitarian Sharon Katz was born in Nelson Mandela Bay (formerly Port Elizabeth) during the Apartheid era and began her musical anti-Apartheid activism as a teenager. Sneaking past police barricades to illegally enter the “Blacks-only” townships near her home, Sharon was inspired by her friend John Kani (now famous for his Tony Awards and role in the hit movie “Black Panther”) to use her music to address social justice issues. The documentary about her, “When Voices Meet,” has won awards worldwide and The Getty, Carnegie Hall, Pete Seeger, and Sting have all featured her performances.
