From Rancho La Puerta to the Boston Marathon with Martha Aarons and Tom & Donnie Flahavan

Week of December 25, 2021

A chance encounter with Tom and Donnie Flahavan and Dean Karnazes at Rancho La Puerta ignited a passion in a late-starting casual runner and long-time musical Ranch presenter.  Martha Aarons and Tom and Donnie Flahavan will chat with Barry Shingle about how this serendipitous week gave Martha an opportunity to discover unexpected possibilities and fulfill new dreams.

Martha Aarons’ professional career began with her appointment as principal flute of the North Carolina Symphony. Subsequently she played with the Cleveland Orchestra for 25 years.  After becoming a freelancer she performed often with the Philadelphia Orchestra and as a guest principal flute with the Metropolitan Opera, Minnesota Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, and Mostly Mozart Festival. She served as Artist Faculty with the Aspen Music Festival for 19 years. Her teaching credits include the Cleveland Institute of Music, Duke University, University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill, Oberlin College, Skidmore College, Shanghai Conservatory and Eastman School of Music. Her first solo CD, The History of the Tango, is recorded on the Azica label and additionally features pianist Frances Renzi and Grammy-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux.  Her newest release is the CD Last Silence.

Martha is also an avid runner and just participated in the 125th Boston Marathon this past October finishing 5th in her age category and qualifying for entry to next year’s Boston Marathon.
