Jean recently completed a Soil to Table certification program living at Tres Estrellas organic farm and learning and practicing regenerative farming and food preservation techniques.  She is a firm believer that your DNA is not always your destiny – your dinner plate can be your destiny.

Amp Up Your Interpersonal Effectiveness!

How to communicate with just about anybody, come across with tact and diplomacy, wow ‘em with your magnetism and charisma, and put your best foot forward in any situation
When you think about it, we’re constantly in charge of “marketing” ourselves. Whether it’s to friends, colleagues, clients, customers, family members, or strangers in the grocery store, it’s up to us to present ourselves as the people we think we are—or perhaps, as the people we aspire to be.

So how do you do it? Through crystal-clear communication channels. With body language that matches your words. By employing techniques that seek to clarify understanding among individuals. And—the best part—all of these skills are 100% acquirable.

In this series of classes, we’ll examine ways in which you can put your point across with tact and accuracy, make a positive first impression, become a better listener (yes, it’s a learned skill!), give specific feedback (even when it’s a difficult message), and, when problems arise, handle and diffuse negative emotions in yourself and others.

Denise’s classes are always positive, informative, and fun!

It All Starts With YOU—and How You Come Across to Others
How do you look and sound? We’ll examine the seven essential communication components that create your unique “you-ness,” and you’ll learn some easy (and instant) tweaks to project yourself with accuracy and self-assurance.

Personal Response Styles: Passive, Aggressive and Assertive
Are you passive, aggressive or assertive—or perhaps all three? We’ll take a look at the response styles of ourselves and others, discuss how your style affects your life (and your relationships), and how you can make simple changes that create big results!

Speaking and Listening: The “Give and Take” of Successful Communication
Speaking and listening—they go together! What’s more, they’re both equally necessary for true communication to take place. We’ll discuss how to accurately share your thoughts and feelings, avoid distractions, stay focused, pay attention, and honor others through your mindful presence.

When Relationship Difficulties Arise: Assertive Problem Solving
Conflicts, quarrels, disputes, misunderstandings…try as we might, they sometimes happen. We’ll discuss how to untangle miscommunications, disarm anger, quell hurt feelings, and we’ll explore some tips for how to create peace and understanding in your personal and professional relationships.

Find the Way to Your Best Sleep Ever

Insomnia Treatment: Medication isn’t the only answer!
Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line recommended treatment for insomnia, ahead of medication. This talk will introduce key concepts to behavioral treatment for insomnia, from creating the ideal bedroom environment to finding the right bedtime/waketime intervals for sleep consolidation, and when medication may be necessary.

Why is sleep important and how do I know if I have a sleep disorder?
We are a chronically sleep-deprived world. As more and more demands take up our time, sleep becomes less and less of a priority for far too many people. In this course, we will discuss why sleep is essential to our overall well-being. In addition, common sleep issues will be discussed to help you understand whether further evaluation for a sleep disorder is necessary. Differences between men and women’s sleep – throughout the lifespan – will also be addressed in detail.

Help Me Quiet My Busy Nighttime Brain! :
We are an overstimulated society, and with more demands comes a greater challenge to quiet the brain at bedtime to allow sleep to come. Mindfulness meditation has been increasingly incorporated into insomnia programs, helping to dim the brain at night and prepare for sleep. Cognitive and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy strategies for the busy brain will also be introduced. Simple mindfulness meditation exercises will be discussed and practiced, and ways to use mindfulness appropriately to help enhance sleep will reviewed.

Couple’s Sleep Issues / Ask the Sleep Doc Anything!
The field of sleep medicine is starting to really think about couples in terms of sleep. What are common sleep and relationship issues that come up with people share a bed? What are some treatment strategies so both partners can get a good night’s sleep? When is it time to sleep apart? We’ll combine this talk with an “Ask the Sleep Doc Anything” so you can better figure out what to do to improve your sleep when you return home.

Dr. Shelby Harris is a clinical psychologist and author of The Women’s Guide to Overcoming Insomnia (WW Norton Books, 2019). She specializes in behavioral sleep medicine, working to improve her clients’ sleep using evidence-based methods that do not rely upon medication. Her unique expertise is frequently sought out by colleagues, well-respected medical institutions and media outlets world-wide.

Exploring the Enneagram’s Pathways Toward Self-Understanding

Becoming Your Best Self
The Enneagram is an ancient system of clarifying humanity’s distinct personality types and the complementary relationships between them. The Enneagram is currently experiencing an unprecedented level of interest and practice, particularly with millennials.

Each of the nine different personality types is motivated by a “type perspective” that is invariably somewhat distorted. Each type has its innate ego traits and its innate spiritual traits. These are not in opposition to each other, rather they are the flip sides of “your personality coin.”

We all have four basic human needs: (1)  the need for connection; (2) the need to feel safe and healthy; (3) the need to know who we are; and, (4) the need to experience pleasure. The Enneagram can address all of our needs by helping us discover our gifts, by further clarifying our identity, and, by enhancing our sense of self as we relate to the people in our lives.

Class 1:
The Wizard of Enneagram
The individual quests of three characters in the Wizard of Oz—the Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tinman— are universal. The Enneagram refers to these three centers of being as the gut, the head, and the heart.

Class 2:
What’s My Type?
The Enneagram identifies all of humanity as nine different personality types, each with particular gifts, traits, and desires. Knowing your type provides insights into your behavior and world-view.

Class 3:
It IS All about You
We will use the “narrative tradition” to share our thoughts and questions about the Enneagram. We will gain greater empathy and insights into ourselves, each other, and the whole of humanity.

Betsy Ingalls has made an art and a career of exploring and analyzing diverse ways to empower individuals to become their best selves. Prior to founding the Bingalls School of Somatic Happiness in Santa Barbara, she worked as a financial advisor in Minneapolis. She has now taught both the Enneagram and Feldenkrais Awareness through Movement for almost 20 years. She has also shared her expertise on TV and as a presenter at various wellness festivals and institutions, of which her favorite is Rancho La Puerta.

How to Foster Rewarding Relationships with Our Adult Children

In the ten years post high school our children often follow a scenic road to adulthood. At least before COVID, they did. This decade is filled with personal exploration, traveling, alternating between career training and school, changing relationships frequently or having none at all. Our Children vary between being very adult and very dependent. Soon enough, many of the children have jobs, then families, or maybe they don’t.

We are constantly told to let go, but we don’t want to. We’ve had too many sleepless nights and put in too much time and energy. When children are older, popular wisdom advises parents to let go, disconnect, and bite their tongues. Increasing life spans mean that parents and children can spend as many as five or six decades as adults together: letting go is not a desired option for many families.

Dr. Ruth Nemzoff–a leading expert in family dynamics–empowers parents to create close relationships with their adult children, while respecting their independence. The challenges of parent and adult offspring relationships are part and parcel of a healthy family dynamic.

This interactive talk will cover such topics as:

  • How can I express my concerns about finances or career decisions without sounding controlling or judgmental?
  • What can I do to maintain close relationships with my children at long distances?
  • Should I express my true feelings about my child’s lifestyle choices?
  • Is it possible to show constructive concern for adult children without stifling them?
    • Speak up when disapproving of an adult child’s partner or child rearing practices
    • Navigate an adult child’s inter-religious, interracial or homosexual union

Why would I ever want to make in-laws into family?
If you want to have a good relationship with your adult child, it’s much easier when you have good relationships with their significant other and their parents. Sometimes it’s really hard to find something you love about this person who may become the parent of your grandchildren or may be picking your nursing home. We’ll discuss strategies for finding that sweet spot.

As for their parents, it may be hard to love them, but you may find yourself living in a two-room apartment caring for a newborn while the mother recovers in the hospital. You might as well figure out a way to find something in common with them. Dr. Ruth Nemzoff explains the emotional factors that make in-law relationships difficult, and offers tips on how to overcome those hurdles and maintain positive, lasting bonds. This can be a guide for anyone looking to gracefully navigate the issues that arise between in-laws in today’s modern families.

Grandparenting in a Pandemic: A Conversation for Grandparents
Long-distance grandparenting has always been a challenge. Coronavirus has made it a whole lot harder – even for grandparents who live down the block. Add to this the complexity of being a grandparent in an intra- or interfaith family. But there are also some new opportunities to connect even more deeply – if we take advantage of them. For some of us, this might be a great opportunity to tell holiday stories to our entertainment-starved grandkids. For others, this is a time to really set aside differences and build trust with our family and in-laws.

No matter what generation you are in, I think you will find some new ideas to help your family’s relationships in these talks.

Conscious Interactions For a Healthier and Happier Life

The Laws of Negotiation From Bedroom To Boardroom
It is important to know what you eat, but it is equally important to know what is eating you!                                                                                                      – Persian proverb

A healthy life style requires healthy relationships and healthy relationships require healthy interactions, communications and negotiations.

As social beings, we must interact in order to survive. Unfortunately most people have not mastered the art and science of interaction. As a society, we have resorted to conflict resolution instead of being proactive and using conflict prevention.

As in nature, humans and their interactions are subject to certain laws that we must honor in order to survive and thrive.  Learn the 8 Universal Laws of Enlightened Negotiation with emphases on Effective Communications, Building Trust, the Power of Intention, and the Magic of Mindfulness.

Elevating Your Interactions Using The Laws of Intention and Strength
In this session you will learn how to use The Law of Intention as a GPS or the guiding light of your behavior in any interaction or negotiation. We will also discuss The Law of Strength; you will discover the source of your strength in any negotiation and learn how to tap into that source.

Lead and be proactive in your interaction to avoid failure or conflict, using the Laws of Flexibility and Manifestation
We are born to be creative. Our world is what we envision and create collectively. To create is to take inspired action to manifest the result that we want. The Law of Manifestation reveals the key principals in creating your desired outcome. Plus you will learn how to be flexible without compromising your values by applying The Law of Flexibility, which is the key that opens up possibilities in any negotiation.

Ditch Your Inner Critic B**CH
Do you know that voice in your head that tells you that you are not good enough? That inner critic b**ch loves to remind us of all our shortcomings and insecurities. In today’s session, we will start understanding where she came from and practice both inviting her in for a cup of tea and telling her to pack her bags and leave town!

Intro Tapping (EFT) – It may just change your life
Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT (often known as Tapping), is a healing tool that can help with physical, emotional, and performance issues. My favorite use of it is to bring a big emotional charge down fast or to process a limiting belief.

Radical Self Acceptance
Why is it so much easier to be kinder to others than to ourselves? In today’s session, you learn how to treat yourself with tender loving care, develop a gratitude practice, and upgrade your self-care to a whole new level.

Is it Food you are Craving or Something Else?
Often we look at our well-being in terms of diet, exercise, and maybe some sleep. But what about fun? Learning new things? Sex? So many aspects go into making us feel good and when these needs are not met we often turn to substitutes like food, alcohol, or drugs. Today’s session will help you take a look at your life and see what is really going on and what you are really craving.

Light or Tight – the Ultimate Decision-Making Tool
So often we get stuck in our heads when making decisions and do not realize that our body has untapped wisdom. Come learn how to listen to and start trusting the wisdom of your own body to see what it is trying to tell you so that you can make positive choices and ease the decision-making process.
