Luisa McCarthy is the Director and Producer of the largest traditional Día de los Muertos celebration in San Diego County.   Luisa grew up traditionally celebrating Día de los Muertos in her hometown of Mexico City.  Although Luisa has a master’s degree in Business Management from the University of Redlands, her heart is in community service. She is proud to have initiated an authentic Día de los Muertos celebration which she hosts yearly at La Vista Memorial Park, a 40 acre park that provides the community a place to acknowledge and celebrate loved ones in a cemetery consistently mindful of the souls who rest there. She has honed her skills of organizing events from her continued education in the Event Management Certification Program at the University of San Diego. As co-owner of La Vista, she is able to pull out all the stops for her beloved Día de los Muertos celebration.  This celebration was inspired by the loss of her father, Julius E. McCarthy, laid to rest in Valle Las Palmas cemetery, Tecate, B.C., Mexico. She now brings this celebration to Rancho La Puerta to share with guests and her Ranch family.

Life Is Not One Size Fits All Journey; Your Path Belongs Only to You

Everyone wants us to change:  I say, let’s make the most out of where we are right now!

How Much Does Happiness Weigh?

Monica Parker provides a funny and inspirational look at life through society’s warped fun-house mirror. Some 90% of women experience some form of body image anxiety. It seems so many of us are in a constant war with our bodies. Self-worth doesn’t come from the outside. It comes from within. Her philosophy is “Everyone wants us to change; I want us to make the most of what we’ve already got. We all have the goods, we just have to know how to mine them!”

Aging Disgracefully – Let’s Make It Our Own:  Having Fun on the Journey

Whatever our age we must celebrate the aging process especially if we are going to be around for such a long time. Most importantly is good health, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Loneliness and boredom lead to depression. Staying in shape through food and exercise – we must remain a constant work in progress. And letting go of all toxic feelings – resentment, jealousy, anger and above all rage!  We need to replace those feelings with gratitude, love and acceptance for what we can’t change. Those are the actions and feelings that keep us youthfully vibrant! Three keys to aging well – Community, humor and Advil!

Thriving While Surviving: The Power of Resilience

In life, just like the weather, there are sunny days and rainy days. But when the occasional tsunami arrives, resilience is the undercoating that we need to protect ourselves. Resilience or flexibility is what we all need to make it through those moments when the unexpected comes our way. It is our RESPONSE to circumstances that defines us. Nothing exacerbates drama more than being reactive. Acceptance and love are two paths to resilience. Anger and resentment are not.

Monica Parker has always known she was destined for big things. She didn’t know that meant her ever-fluctuating body. Having worked with many of the greats―including Anthony Hopkins, George Clooney, Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow, John Cusack and Kim Catrall,  Monica’s smart and sassy take on living life to the fullest, challenging conventional thinking with humor, have made her a much-desired host/speaker, actress, writer. Her successful one-woman show, “SEX, PIES & A FEW WHITE LIES” toured North America and spawned her funny and deeply moving memoir Getting Waisted (A Survival Guide to Being Fat in a World That Loves Thin). Then came the delightful, much praised OMG! How Children See God. Her latest book is Oops! I Forgot to Save Money.

Daily Meditation Sunday through Friday

Sylvia Boorstein has been teaching Dharma and mindfulness meditation since 1985. She is a founding teacher of Spirit Rock Meditation Center, a psychotherapist, wife, mother, and grandmother. She is particularly interested in emphasizing daily life as mindfulness practice and including informed citizenship and social activism as integral to spiritual maturation. Color Journals:  Learning to See Color with Fresh Eyes

This workshop will focus our attention on the color environment in and around Rancho La Puerta with the aim of increasing our observational acuity and color perception while examining the emotional, cultural and personal foundations of our chromatic preferences.  The workshop will be modular, with daily activities. The workshop will utilize simple materials and will be designed for non-experts to have success while stretching their understanding of how we see color and how it can be used.  Participants who attend multiple sessions will accumulate pages within a color journal that will be a visual record of their color experiences at Rancho La Puerta.

Hand Binding a Sketchbook

Participants will make an Italian-style hand sewn sketchbook/notebook that we will fill with the color exercises over the course of the week.  (Anyone who doesn’t attend the first session can still participate in any of the later sessions!) 90 mins

Color Perception:  New Eyes

We will discuss and observe the ways that our eyes and our minds collaborate to create the perception of color.  We will experiment with color combinations using paper collage to examine the ways that color can change dramatically based on context. 75 mins

Color Preferences:  Learning to Love All Colors

We will discuss our emotional reactions to colors and the reasons for those feelings.  We will practice recontextualizing colors to turn even the most disliked colors into combinations that we can appreciate. 75 mins

Complicated Color:  Looking Closer

We will experiment with optical mixing to color match the myriad complex color combinations that make up the colors of natural objects.  We will test our ability to remember colors accurately, then expand our color perception through extremely close observation of plants, rocks, etc., from the grounds. 75 mins

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Color:  Color Truths and Color Lies

We will discuss the differences between natural and artificial colors.  We will make watercolor paints out of locally found materials and natural pigments, discuss the various visual, physical and tactile qualities of “real” colors versus “fake” colors, and make a visual record of some of the colors found at Ranch La Puerta. 75 mins

Richard Rudis has been a student of Buddhist philosophy for nearly thirty years and is an American practitioner of the Tibetan ‘Vajrayana’ school.

As a long-time pilgrim of Himalayan sacred sites he has received Buddhist teachings and traditional instructions/research into the use of sacred sound instruments for ritual and healing purposes. While in Tibet in 1996 he was granted refuge in the Buddha via His Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa (17th reincarnation and head of the Kagyu lineage). His Holiness renamed him Sonam Dorje; (Meritorious Thunderbolt).

Richard has been teaching the Buddhist Dharma of Vibrational Healing across the U.S. and abroad for twenty years and is considered most knowledgeable in this esoteric field. His unique playing craftsmanship is a fusion of his rarefied studies in sacred sound playing techniques, tantric education, engineering background and Buddhist principles. Principally using a tuned ‘Paiste’ Earth Gong he creates a ‘Sound Mandala’, known as a ‘Gong Bath™, that is naturally physically, emotionally and spiritually healing. He is often a prominent speaker/presenter at various conferences having to do with transformative energy, healing, meditation and well being.

He began teaching via the establishment of the ‘Sacred Sound Workshops’ in the 1990’s formalizing the curriculum by joining with the ‘Tibetan Bowl Healing School’  (www.tibetanbowlschool.com) in 2008.

The Evolution of Relating in the 21st Century

From the moment we are born, relationships are a critical aspect of our wellbeing. For nearly 80 years, Harvard has been studying clues to a fulfilling life. Their findings are resoundingly conclusive: our relationships have an observable influence on our health and happiness. If we’re not consciously choosing all dimensions of how we relate, we may find that our default patterns do not serve our heart’s desires, purpose or our needs. In this series we’ll illuminate how being aware of and attending to our habits of relating helps us hold and honor the containers that make life workable.  Playfully discover the small adjustments we can make to gain value in the relationship connections, results and fulfillment we seek.

  • Exploring the Hidden World of Thriving Relationships
  • Cultivating Trust for the Art of Soul Sharing
  • Breathing into Presence: Inhale Your Part, Exhale What Belongs to Others
  • The Theory of Imagination

Quest for Inspiration

Quest for Inspiration

Leslie’s unusual methods to increase one’s creativity have made her one of the Ranch’s most popular presenters.  She believes inspired thinking is necessary for professional and personal reasons, and without it we run the risk of becoming stale and possibly turning into adult zombies.

The Hows and Whys of Astrology

Leslie McGuirk, professional astrologer, believes your astrology chart is like the owner’s manual in your car. It can tell you the best way to run your vehicle, but you always have free will to do whatever you want. Discover more about your own personal imprinting system and how this knowledge can help make life a lot easier.

The Power of Mercury

Everyone talks about Mercury Retrograde, but few people know what it really means. Everyone knows their Sun Sign.  Few know their Mercury Sign.  Mercury describes our intelligence, mind and memory.  It rules our sense of humor, what fascinates us, how we speak, how we write and how we express ourselves with words.  Knowing about Mercury signs is a wonderful tool for discovering compatibility.  In this class you will understand why some people are easier for you to get along with than others.

Leslie McGuirk’s children’s books include the Tucker Series, If Rocks Could Sing, and Wiggens Learns His Manners at the Four Seasons, which Martha Stewart calls “a charming introduction to the fine art of good behavior.” She has sold over 2 million books worldwide, but started as an untrained artist selling her T-Shirt designs out of the back of her car. She became a marketing phenomenon in Japan during the 1990’s. Takashimaya, the high end Japanese department store produced over 1,500 products with her designs. She was also chosen as the designer for the restoration of the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel. Her “Quest for Inspiration” workshops began at Rancho La Puerta and have since been taught in many places. Leslie’s well-received TED talk in Hollywood, California on THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING WRONG can be found on the Web: lesliemcguirk.com The Importance of Being Wrong | Leslie McGuirk | TEDxHollywood

Leslie is also a professional Astrologer with 30 years-experience.  She has been featured on Coast to Coast radio, The Jenny McCarthy Show, and in Elle Magazine and Refinery 29, as well as a featured speaker at astrology conferences.  Her book, The Power of Mercury, published by Harper Collins in 2016, is a fresh take on how Mercury shapes our essence from communications to relationships.  Leslie will instruct Ranch guests about the evolution of Astrology and its place in history.  She believes Astrology is about human design.   Everything in Nature has a pattern, like a tree trunk or a snowflake – and humans have a pattern as well – the astrology chart.    www.lesliemcguirk.com   www.luckystarsastrology.com

In her unassuming yet beguiling way, Amber Rubarth draws you into a world where wonder and high-minded concepts weave into a poetic tapestry, a world where space and time can come screeching to a halt with “songs so strong they sound like classics” (Acoustic Guitar). She has toured from South Africa to Japan, all across Europe and even Carnegie Hall, sharing stages with such greats as Emmylou Harris, Richie Havens, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Kenny Loggins and Jason Mraz, and is Grand Prize winner of NPR Mountain Stage song contest.

Rubarth’s eighth album ‘Wildflowers in the Graveyard’ explores life, death and renewal in nature and relationships. All songs are self-penned and recorded to 2″ tape with Matt Andrews (Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings) in Nashville. She’s currently finishing her newest album, set to release in 2022.

Rubarth made her acting debut starring in the feature film ‘American Folk’ alongside songwriter Joe Purdy. The film won various festivals and was released in theaters in 2019, with a soundtrack also featuring John Prine, Jerry Garcia & David Grisman. Rubarth has scored and composed for many films including Sundance Festival winner ‘Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work’ (with Paul Brill) and the award-winning documentary ‘Desert Runners.’ She co-produced ‘Fantastic Fungi: Reimagine,’ a double album inspired by the documentary and mycelial kingdom. Rubarth is co-founder of The Paper Raincoat, a Brooklyn-based iTunes Indie Artist Spotlight band featured in Disney’s The Last Song, One Tree Hill, and Paste Magazine, who said “We think the world might be a little better if everyone heard this record.” In 2016 she recorded a live-to-tape single microphone album with her folk trio ‘Applewood Road’ which the London Sunday Times gave 5 stars, calling it “a flawless set that has to be the most haunting release of the past year,” followed by performances at Glastonbury Music Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, a UK tour supporting Mary Chapin Carpenter, and her original arrangement and performance featured in the ‘BBC Sisters in Country’ documentary with Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris.
