Szekely Library
“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” Marcus Tullius Cicero, 106-43 BC
Good books are like faithful friends; always there, waiting for our other distractions to wane. As a kid I’d lose myself in the library for hours. I’d hide out, becoming a tourist, traveling through ancient history, or find my worldview upended through ideas I discovered in art books. When I’m at Rancho La Puerta, one of my favorite places is the Szekely Library. Named after The Ranch co-founder, Edmond Szekely (also known affectionately as “The Prof”) the library is home to over 3,000 books, 50 periodical titles and a small collection of CDs. It’s my not-so-secret hideout between lunch and a nap. When I stop in at the library, I still lose track of time. There’s a section of books by the guest speakers and famous authors who have stayed at The Ranch. I return to it every time I visit.
