The Cupping Detox Massage: A Gentle Way to Restore and Recharge
The Cupping Detox Massage at Rancho La Puerta uses soft silicone cups to help restore sore muscles and help refresh my body—no bruises, just benefits.
After several invigorating morning hikes at The Ranch, I enjoyed this hydrating, muscle-relaxing experience. Unlike traditional cupping, which can leave behind intense-looking marks, this massage uses a non-marking technique to stimulate circulation and promote healthy skin.
I admit I was hesitant at first. I didn’t want to walk around looking like Michael Phelps during the Olympics, famously spotted with deep, circular bruises from cupping therapy. His method involved heat or vacuum-pumped glass cups, creating intense suction to boost blood flow and ease muscle pain—but they also left awkward big red circular marks.
Rancho La Puerta’s approach is different. The Detox Massage uses flexible silicone cups and mother-of-pearl oil for a far gentler experience. The technique, known as massage cupping—or gliding cupping—uses continuous motion rather than stationary suction. The result? A relaxing and effective treatment that leaves your skin nourished, not marked.

Face down on the massage table, I inhaled the sweet scent of mother-of-pearl oil as my massage therapist began. After a calming scalp massage and gentle pressure along my spine and legs, she started the cupping process, applying the silky oil to help the cups glide smoothly.
The cups are soft and pliable. A gentle squeeze from the therapist creates the suction.
Once my back was complete, the therapist moved to the front of my body, slowly working from my feet to my head. Small, feather-light cups were used on my temples and cheeks. The sensation was soft, almost ticklish—like my skin was getting a quiet and gentle wake-up call.
