Liquid Drum: The Pool Class You Didn’t Know You Needed
There’s a moment about ten minutes into Liquid Drum when you stop thinking about the workout and get lost in the fun of it.
Maybe it’s the music. Maybe it’s the spray of water arcing through the air as everyone around you swings in rhythm. Maybe it’s the simple, almost childlike joy of smacking the surface of a pool with a bright red tube and feeling the water push back.
Whatever it is, it works.
What Is Liquid Drum?
Liquid Drum is Rancho La Puerta’s newest aquatics class, 45 minutes of rhythm-driven movement in the pool, using water resistance tubes to push, pull, and swing against the water. The result is a full-body workout that feels more like a celebration than exercise.

Manuel Velazquez led us from the pool deck, tubes in hand, guiding us through sequences that built in intensity as the class progressed. We worked our arms, shoulders, core, and legs, all while staying cool and moving to the music and Manuel’s directions.
Why It’s Actually a Serious Workout
Don’t let the splashing fool you. Water is significantly denser than air, which means every movement you make in the pool meets far greater resistance than the same movement on land. And because resistance increases exponentially with speed, the faster you move, the harder your muscles work, so Liquid Drum can be as challenging or as accessible as you make it.
In 45 minutes, you’ll raise your heart rate, build upper body and core strength, and burn a meaningful amount of energy. All without feeling like you’re working that hard until the next morning when your arms remind you otherwise and then it’s time to visit one of our spas.
It’s For Everyone
Look around the pool during a Liquid Drum class, and you’ll see exactly the kind of mix that makes it special. Athletes. First-timers. Guests who love a good workout. People who came for the fun and stayed for the burn. Water has a way of leveling the playing field.
The Ranch Makes It Better
There’s something about doing this particular class at Rancho La Puerta that makes it feel like it was designed for our pools. Movement here has always been about joy as much as discipline, and it complements the day, from morning hikes to evening concerts. That’s the thing about Liquid Drum. It’s a workout. But it’s also a really good time.
Come Try It
