Awakening Artistic Senses in Nature with Marjorie Taylor

Deepen your connection to the natural world, enliven all your senses, and reawaken the artist within you. These art workshops are perfect for adults who believe they “can’t draw a straight line” because there are no straight lines in nature. Beginners and experienced artists alike are welcome to attend one or all sessions. Daily connections to nature and creativity can help us live our best wild selves.

Presentation: AWAKENING ARTISTIC SENSES IN NATURE
In a world increasingly dominated by digital overstimulation, making art in nature is a pragmatic approach to mindfulness. Humans are part of the natural world and benefits from connecting with it include improved sleep, concentration, and creativity. Making art reduces stress, depression and anxiety. A closer connection with nature inspires us to be better caretakers of our planet.

Session One: SEEING/DRAWING IN NATURE
Awaken your artistic senses in nature with a sketch walk. Participants will create mini-journals and head outside with pencils in hand. We’ll practice exercises to improve hand/eye coordination amid birdsong and sage. We’ll discuss strategies for simplifying, seeing negative shapes, and noticing the gestures of trees.

Session Two: SKETCHING IN WATERCOLORS
We’ll discuss the importance of letting go of expectations for your art, while continuing the creation of our mini-journals. We’ll review watercolor supplies and learn basic techniques. Participants will practice creating washes, painting wet on wet, layering, painting wet over dry, blotting, and making brushstrokes.

Session Three: RELATIONSHIPS IN COLOR
We’ll explore color relationships in terms of hue, value, and chroma. Learning to see colors in nature, we’ll observe that the sky isn’t always blue, grass has many colors in addition to green, and white isn’t only white. We’ll touch on color theory and participants will practice color mixing and layering to create a variety of effects.

Session Four: BLENDING NATURE AND CREATIVITY IN EVERYDAY LIFE
Turn off the inner critic and tune into the natural world. We’ll add finishing touches to our mini-journals while exploring ways continue making art in nature. In a culture of consumption, creating art is a revolutionary act. Use your voice! You never know how your art practice can inspire others.

After a successful career as a graphic designer and illustrator, Marjorie Taylor returned to her first love—painting—and embarked on a fine art career in oils. Her plein air painting adventures and exhibition opportunities have taken her throughout North America, Central America, Europe, Asia Minor, and North Africa. Her work has been exhibited and collected both nationally and internationally. An experienced educator, she has taught painting, drawing, and a variety of art classes for children and adults in San Diego and Mexico. In recent years, she has expanded her artistic practice beyond oil painting to include watercolor, acrylic, and printmaking, while continuing her work as a writer.

From Field to Forest and More: Natural Foods For Health with Jill Nussinow

Putting More Plants on Your Plate: What is “Plant-Based Eating”?
Of course, you are here at the Ranch, eating a lot of plants. How do you carry this over to eating at home? And why does it matter? What special nutrients do plants provide? We can learn a lot from science and examining the diets of herbivorous animals; how they get strong and stay healthy. Which plants matter and how do you eat more of them? You will leave with a plan for eating in a more “plant-based” manner.

How Gut Health Leads to Better Health and Improved Cognitive Function
What does one need to eat to have a healthy “microbiome” which encompasses more than just your gut or GI tract. You will learn more about the connection between your gut and your brain, and how this affects your sleep and wellbeing. With growing concerns about brain health, we must consider that you cannot separate the brain from the body. The goal then, is overall health, which often begins in the “gut”. Remember the rock song that stated: “Feed Your Head?” Learn about the foods that do this.

Mushrooms for Food, Mood, Nutrition and More
There are so many species of fungi (mushrooms); a number are edible, some are medicinal and others are poisonous. You will learn about the nutritional composition of a variety of mushrooms, how to cook them, how they are cultivated, how and where they grow, and more. Mushrooms feed the gut and are part of the gut-brain connection. Jill has been foraging for mushrooms for twenty years and speaking at SOMA Wild Mushroom camp for more than 10 years. This fascinating topic is fun and “magic”.

Food As Medicine: Harnessing the Power of Your Food Choices
If food is medicine, can it truly replace pharmaceutical medications? Jill will take you on a tour of current dietary trends, discussing what works and what doesn’t work, and why a plan needs to be individualized. She will review label reading, choosing the “best for you” foods, behavior change and more, in this lively lighthearted look at a serious subject. You will learn tips and tricks on how to fuel your body in the most positive way.

Jill Nussinow, MS, RDN, is a Registered Dietitian who has taught whole food plant-based and vegan cooking for over 40 years. She taught nutrition and culinary arts at Santa Rosa Junior College for 30 years and is the author of four award-winning plant-based cookbooks.

Beyond her work in nutrition, Jill is passionate about foraging wild plants and fungi in Mendocino and Sonoma Counties and is a sought-after speaker at the annual Sonoma County Wild Mushroom Camp in Occidental, California. Over the past five years, she has also become deeply involved in breathwork, teaching students both online and in person at The Sea Ranch. She emphasizes the importance of being in a “rest and digest” state while cooking and, especially, while eating.

Gyrokinesis with Nora Heiber

GYROKINESIS® is a movement practice designed to awaken and expand the body’s capacity for life.

Over the course of the week, we’ll explore different aspects of the practice through breath, rhythm, and three-dimensional movement—listening and responding to what is alive in the body, awakening what is less available, softening unnecessary tension, and becoming more aware of where life flows and where it does not. Each class offers a different doorway into greater freedom, connection, ease, and possibility. Individual classes stand on their own and are accessible to all levels.  Attending the full series, is encouraged, if possible, as the themes build upon and deepen one another.

Sunday – Rhythm & Flow
Rhythm organizes life and helps keep it moving. Through continuous, rhythmic sequences, we’ll explore where movement flows easily and where it may have become less available. Repetition and rhythm help move us out of stagnation, restore circulation and fluidity, and create the conditions for greater ease.

Monday – Breath & Presence
Breath feeds and sustains life—and movement. We’ll use breath to awaken the senses, deepen internal awareness, and listen more closely to what is happening within us. From that place of presence, movement becomes less something we “do” and more something we allow to emerge.

Tuesday – Grounding, Connection & Creating Space
Expansion begins with connection. We’ll explore where to create opposition within the body—grounding in one direction to create space in another. This dynamic relationship creates more room in the joints while simultaneously developing stability, support, and freedom.

Wednesday – Strength from Within — Encouraging, Not Forcing
Strength develops when we move within a comfortably challenged range, inviting the body to stretch a little beyond its current capacity without forcing it there. Rather than demanding more, we encourage greater possibility—gradually expanding the body’s capacity to respond with strength, resilience, and freedom.

Thursday – Moving with Ease — Cultivating What We Want
Rather than focusing on what needs to be fixed, we’ll listen for the qualities we want to cultivate—ease, space, connection, fluidity, support, and joy. By softening unnecessary tension and awakening what is less available, we create conditions that allow those qualities to emerge more naturally.

Friday – Celebration of Movement
Bringing together breath, rhythm, connection, expansion, strength, and ease, we’ll explore movement as a practice of listening and responding to life within us. An invitation to experience greater freedom, vitality, play, joy, and ultimately, a greater celebration of life.

No previous GYROKINESIS® experience is necessary. All classes are accessible to all levels.

Nora Heiber is a first-generation Specialized GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® Master Trainer who has been teaching for 40 years. A founding member of Alonzo King LINES Ballet and longtime dancer with the San Francisco Opera, she has taught internationally and helped train generations of teachers in the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®. Nora’s work draws on a lifetime of exploring movement, embodiment, and human connection. Her teaching invites curiosity rather than correction—cultivating awareness, ease, strength, freedom, and joy. With her husband, Cliff Jepsen, she created Intentionally Wild, Inc., a retreat and learning center in California’s Sierra Foothills dedicated to movement, connection, community and life-affirming activities.

Retrain the Brain for Greater Joy, Connection and Purpose with Randy Kamen

  1. Strengthen Your Mindset: The Foundation
  2. Build Your Capacity to ‘Take in the Good’
  3. Grow Your Self-Compassion
  4. Strengthen Communication: Deepen Relationships
  5. Discover Your Life Vision

Strengthen Your Mindset: The Foundation
Each of us possesses the capacity to tap into our deepest desires in life and create a life that feels fulfilling and personally empowered.
The right mindset along with learning a few tools and strategies has everything to do with igniting our experience of joy, connection and purpose.
When you know how to manage your mind, then you are able to get out of your own way and create a life that is joyful and fulfilling.
This session explores the power of ‘mindset’ and how it impacts every aspect of life:

– Discover how to ‘manage your mind’ with a simple strategy that can be immediately put into play
– Learn a simple mini-meditation for greater inner peace, cognitive function, heart health, and increased immunity
– Create a personalized ‘declaration’ or ’intention’ specific to you to set a positive context for your day

These three steps form a powerful morning ritual that takes less than five minutes a day to practice. When regularly practiced, this routine will change the way your brain fires and the body responds,  building your capacity to manage the mind and your reactions.

Build Your Capacity to ‘Take in the Good’
Gratitude is an emotion that relates to the ability to feel and express thankfulness and appreciation. Research shows that expressing gratitude improves mental, physical and relational health, happiness and well-being. Although most of us know that we “should” feel grateful for our lives, we tend to focus on what’s missing rather than the abundance that exists in our lives. Gratitude unlocks the door to forgiveness—which is often the key to expanding the experience of inner freedom. In this session participants will learn how to strengthen their capacity for gratitude and forgiveness.

– Discover how to capture and amplify moments of joy and appreciation in real time
– Recognize and savor the sweetness of everyday life even in the face of challenges, loss, and transitions
– Learn a two-minute gratitude exercise that you can practice daily for greater calm, focus and clarity

How to Grow Your Self-Compassion
Loving Kindness or metta is about developing peace, harmony and mutual well-being within our selves and with others. Through metta one learns to abandon bitterness and animosity and embrace goodwill. Metta, when practiced regularly, teaches unconditional self-love and love for others. A simple loving kindness meditation will be taught that participants can practice on a daily basis. This method takes only a couple minutes a day of practice. Over time it becomes internalized and changes your mindset as it opens the heart in a multitude of ways.

– Learn how to care for your mind and body with love and respect
– Reframe negative self-talk and view life circumstances from a more positive lens
– Discover how to forgive yourself and forge ahead

Strengthen Your Relationships Now
Learn to communicate more effectively with your partner, friends, family and everyone else in your life. Build the ability to listen generously and speak clearly from the heart— paving the way for true connection with others. Strengthening healthy and loving relationships with others is critical to your health, happiness and longevity.

– Strengthen your capacity to listen generously and effectively
– Learn to stop personalizing and making assumptions about what others say
– Develop your ability to express yourself with clarity and focus

Discover Your Life Vision
Every day we have hundreds of choices to make about how we are going to show up in our lives. Without knowing where you are heading it is impossible to navigate life well or wisely. When clear about your personal vision, you are able to create/pay attention to an inner compass that informs your choices and actions going forward. The first step is knowing what matters the most to you and why.

– Discover what matters most to you.
– Examine the difference between what you do with your precious time and what you truly desire.
– Commit to certain action steps that move you closer to your vision every day.

Please note that each of these talks stand alone and also form a progression that supports you in creating a more joyful, healthy, and meaningful life.

Art In Its Moment With Hugh Levick

Art in Its Moment, Part 1
Using art, literature, and music as its vehicle, the first chapter of ART IN ITS MOMENT (AIIM) is a fun romp through five eras of history: The Classical, The Romantic, The Modern, Mid-20th Century, and the 21st Century. Weaving together literature, art and music, AIIM brings alive the different textures of each historical period to suggest how the art created in each epoch grows from the experience of being alive at that moment.

Art in Its Moment, Part 2
The second chapter of AIIM will focus on a 21st century composition—THE UNIMAGINED: PREPARATIONS FOR THE UNKNOWN– a composition which was inspired by walking the labyrinth at Rancho. Levick will relate how the labyrinth inspired him, and more specifically, how inspiration was translated into music. You will be encouraged to share how the music made you feel, what you liked and didn’t like, how you would describe in words what you just heard, etc.

Hugh Levick’s music has been described by LA Times critic, Mark Swed, as ‘outstanding’ and by critic Rodney Punt as “channeling Bach’s mental energies and Hindemith’s angularities.”  In 2013 Signature Records, the dynamic and eclectic label sponsored by Radio France Musique, released the Diotima String Quartet recording of Levick’s three string quartets. In June 2018 Signature Records/Radio France released Levick’s second CD, which once again features the Diotima. A third Signature CD of Levick’s music, featuring the Diotima and the French ensemble, TM+, is planned for 2023. In 2011 Levick created HEAR NOW, a festival of new music by contemporary LA composers. In its eleventh season HEAR NOW 2022 took take place between April 24th and May 1st in Los Angeles. He has performed in Los Angeles, Paris, NYC, Switzerland, Germany, and Spain, among other places.

Mah Jongg with Toby Salk

The Beauty and Soul of Mah Jongg
Come hear Toby Salk’s lively lecture about the history of how Mah Jongg became so popular in the United States, how Mah Jongg has seeped into popular culture, and so much more. Toby’s mother and aunts played Mah Jongg before she was born. So, you might say she first heard the clicking and clacking of Mah Jongg tiles in the womb! Don’t miss this wonderful and wacky Toby Salk talk! You do not need to be a player to attend!

Beginners Mah Jongg–American Style
This class will teach you the basics of playing American Mah Jongg according to the National Mah Jongg League Guidelines. The focus will be on tile recognition, rules, strategy and lots of fun! This is also a great class to take if you are rusty and want to go back to the basics. You must be present for the first class if you really want to learn – 4 classes.

Toby Salk knew it was time for reinvention after the end of a long-term corporate job. She tried on all of the hats she’d worn throughout her life, seeing if one might fit again. One night, she was sitting at a dinner party with a successful bakery owner. She looked at her squarely in the eye and said, “You should be teaching Mah Jongg.” Before Toby could protest, she offered her bakery in the evenings for her first class. Experimenting on friends first, she then organized her first class at Sweet Adeline Bakery and had to turn people away. It was a huge success. Now she is teaching all over the Bay Area, including two exclusive women’s clubs on Union Square, Berkeley Adult School, Orinda Park and Rec, and private homes.
