Week of October 28, 2023
“Those Who Left But Return Today”
Saturday, October 28, 7pm, dining hall
Grupo de Danza Folklórica Mexicana Wa-Kushmaa Binational (US-MEX) will perform an artistic program dedicated to Dia De Muertos from the lacustrine region of Michoacán. Live the experience of this ancestral Purépecha tradition from dances, to music, and ofrendas.
This troupe has honorably represented Mexico in various international folk festivals in countries such as Colombia, Peru, Serbia, and Macedonia. Founded in 2005, by the border of Tijuana and San Ysidro, the group comprises students from both sides of the border. They identify themselves to the natives of these lands, the Kumeyaay who know no borders. The group’s name originates from the Kumeyaay language: ‘Wa’ meaning family and ‘Kushmaa’ meaning dance, together “family that dances.” Their purpose is to connect with their roots through dance and share it with the community. The current locations of the academies are in Chula Vista, California, and Primo Tapia, Rosarito, Baja California.
