Good Health Starts in the Gut

Week of February 19, 2022

Join America’s Trusted Digestive Nutrition Expert in this series of evidence-based nutrition programs that explore the nutritional foundations of health and longevity, and their connection to digestive wellbeing and the gut microbiome.

  1. Eating for Longevity
Everyone seems to have a different opinion on what we should be eating… and what we shouldn’t.  What is the best diet for us to follow: Mediterranean? Vegan? Keto? Gluten free? And who should we be listening to when it comes to advice on diet? We can gain a lot of insight into what an ideal dietary pattern looks like from the longest-living populations in the world—the centenarians of the world’s so-called “Blue Zones,” and examining their diet and lifestyle patterns can help answer the burning question of “What should I eat?”  You’ll leave with answers to all your questions about whether breakfast is really so important, and what role seemingly controversial foods like carbs, gluten, dairy, soy and sugar play in the diets of the world’s healthiest, longest-living people.
  1. What is an Anti-Inflammatory Diet?
Since many diseases are linked to chronic, low grade inflammation, interest in anti-inflammatory diets is understandably great. There many different dietary programs making anti-inflammatory diet claims, and much online chatter about certain categories of foods being inflammatory and others being anti-inflammatory. But what does the science actually say? This talk will introduce you to the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), a research based tool that offers science-based guidance as to what a truly anti-inflammatory diet looks like. It may surprise you!
  1. The Care and Feeding of Your Gut Microbiota
Meet the 100 trillion microscopic inhabitants of your gut whose state of wellbeing contributes to outcomes as varied as risk of autoimmune disease and weight gain to depression and Type 2 diabetes.  Their diversity and prosperity is essential to your health and longevity, so learn what diet and lifestyle habits you can adopt to keep them thriving, and what factors impact them adversely.
  1. Your Gut in its Golden Years
Gut health is foundational to overall wellbeing, but many people find their digestive system function starts to change after age fifty.  In this program, you’ll learn about some of the common physiological changes our digestive system and gut microbiome experience with aging, how we can modify our diets to maintain robust gut health as we age, and how to address common digestive problems that may arise.
