Pearls from the Practice of Life

A family physician’s guide to help you struggle less and thrive more in your one wild and precious life.

First Things First
A review of the ground rules for the game of life and a checklist of the essential items to pack for the journey.  Topics include genetics, choice, the pursuit of happiness, friends, generous listening, strategy, overcoming self-consciousness and decision paralysis, balancing making money and doing good, showing up and following through, flexibility, creativity, calendars and checklists, and a description of everyone’s favorite teammate.

Breaking Away from the Thundering Herd
Will you use your days and years to languish in the ordinary and pedestrian, or work with others to change the arc of history?  Topics include values inventories, mission statements, lofty goals, greatness redefined, finding your lane, flow, and a physician’s inside scoop on end-of-life satisfaction and regret.

From the Ashe Rises the Phoenix
The bad news is that brokenness, isolation, and feelings of despair are widespread.  The good news is that we are forged into our best selves through our struggles.  Topics include multiple simultaneous conflicting imperatives (MSCI), kintsugi, foxhole mantras, the music of Dave Matthews, and the wisdom of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Richard Rohr, and John Gardner.

From Values to Vows
An action plan for your metamorphosis into a new and improved version of you.  Dr. Chuck reviews the six habits that promote resilience, joy, and meaning (values congruent living, imitating resilient others, nurturing social networks, mindfulness, movement, and eating for both health and pleasure) and the SMART model for behavior change that transforms good intentions into sustained changes in thoughts and behaviors.

John Chuck, M.D., draws on over thirty years of patient care, teaching, and leadership experience to help people find solutions to complex problems related to wellness, joy, and meaning.  He does this by being a generous listener, providing informed perspectives, and offering evidence-based hope and encouragement.  He was the Chief of Health Promotion for Kaiser Permanente and the Regional Chair of Physician Health and Wellness for The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG) and is currently a Professor of Family Medicine at California Northstate University.  John’s work has been recognized with the Sidney Garfield Exceptional Contribution Award from TPMG and the UC Davis Alumni Association’s Outstanding Alumnus Award.

Building Your Psychological Strength

Building Your Psychological Strength
The pace of disruption in our world is increasing, not slowing down. In this talk, Dr. Koplewicz takes aim at reducing the mental health impacts of the next global public health crisis — and the remainder of this one. Along the way, he’ll use powerful new video resources developed by the Child Mind Institute and the State of California to teach attendees the top skills for staying grounded. The goal for all of us—kids and adults—is to encourage what Dr. Koplewicz calls “post-traumatic growth.”

Raising Resilient, Self-Reliant and Secure Kids and Grandkids
Just as sturdy scaffolding is necessary when erecting a building and will come down when the structure grows stable, good parenting provides children with steady and warm emotional nourishment on the path toward independence. In his book Scaffold Parenting, Dr. Koplewicz introduces this powerful and clinically tested idea: a deliberate build-up and then gradual loosening of parental support is the single most effective way to encourage kids to climb higher, try new things, grow from mistakes, and develop character and strength. Explaining the building blocks of an effective scaffold from infancy through young adulthood, he expertly guides parents and grandparents through the strategies for raising empowered, capable people.

When to Worry About Your Worries
It is a natural thing to have anxiety. It is normal for very young children to be afraid of the dark, or for school-age children to worry about making friends. But sometimes normal childhood anxiety morphs into something more serious. In this talk, Dr. Koplewicz will cover the signs and symptoms of anxiety and provide practical strategies that empower parents and children alike. Providing a nuanced understanding of what is and isn’t an anxiety disorder, along with insight of the best cutting-edge treatments, Dr. Koplewicz will give attendees a new skillset to help young people (and maybe even themselves).

Harold S. Koplewicz, MD, is the founding president and medical director of the Child Mind Institute, the only independent national nonprofit dedicated to child and adolescent mental health. One of the nation’s leading child and adolescent psychiatrists, Dr. Koplewicz was previously founding director of the NYU Child Study Center and served as director of the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research. His expertise on youth mental health appears frequently in leading media outlets including NBC News, CNN, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times and he has participated in podcast and video interviews with stars including Trevor Noah, Dax Shepard and Reese Witherspoon.  Dr. Koplewicz regularly interviews celebrities including Emma Stone, P!nkand Simone Biles as part of the Child Mind Institute’s mission to inspire kids and decrease the stigma of mental health and learning disorders.  He is the author of several books, including Scaffold Parenting: Raising Resilient, Self-Reliant and Secure Kids in an Age of Anxiety, from Penguin Random House. The Child Mind Institute’s award-winning website, childmind.org, has brought accessible information to more than 65 million parents, teachers and mental health professionals. During the coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Koplewicz led the organization in a digital transformation including telehealth treatment, hotlines for front line professionals, resources for underserved communities and celebrity social media campaigns which reached more than 250 million people.  He recently led the Healthy Minds, Thriving Kids Project in California  –  an innovate partnership between the state of California and the Child Mind Institute to bring essential social emotional supports and coping skills to youth across the state via free, evidence-based video and print resources for students, caregivers and educators.

Upon her return to her native San Diego, Sara was hired as the Corporate Pastry Chef for the Cohn Restaurant Group, running the pastry department for multiple restaurant concepts.

Seasoned Plates is brought to life in the next chapter of the story in order for Sara to share her passion for food and provide a unique culinary experience for each and every client.

Nurturing Your Emotional Health

A Mindful Approach to Stress
During this unique time of living with a pandemic, we have come to accept that stress is a part of daily life, yet many people struggle to understand that although stress can be a detriment to physical health and emotional wellbeing, it can also be a positive, motivating force. This presentation offers a mindful approach to navigating stress, change and challenges — participants will learn about signs of stress related to four dimensions of personal energy: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Research in the field of positive psychology will be highlighted and participants will be introduced to several natural antidotes to stress as well as pathways to cultivating lasting joy and meaning.

Natural Pathways to Well-being
The pursuit of happiness is a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence; however, it is left to individuals to determine the meaning of happiness. Researchers have provided varying definitions of what it means to be happy, but many of us struggle to feel a sustained sense of overall well-being.  COVID-19 has added a new appreciation for the importance of engaging in self-care – feelings of anxiety, depression, isolation, and loss are now more common than ever. This presentation will focus on providing strategies to not only cultivate happiness, but to mindfully navigate change and improve your physical health and emotional wellbeing. Evidenced based benefits of expressing gratitude, engaging in acts of kindness, and the importance of connection will be highlighted. Participants will learn ways to develop a growth mindset and will participate in a mindful practice – leaving the session with a sense of empowerment to approach the challenges of life with greater emotional fortitude.

Boosting Resilience
Resilience is the ability to successfully bounce back from change or misfortune – living with a pandemic has required us to be agile and to adapt to new ways of living.  How successful have you been about navigating the stress and uncertainty of COVID, coping with personal losses, parenting, working, …? When people face adversity whether big or small, they need to apply their mental, physical, and emotional energy to adjust to new circumstances. A set of five characteristics have been associated with people who adapt well to stressful situations and life-altering events. During this session, we will review these five attributes and participants will have an opportunity to assess their current level of resilience and will learn practical ways to boost and strengthen your resilience.

How Emotionally Intelligent Are You?
What is emotional intelligence? How does it impact your relationships with family and friends, partners, and co-workers? During this session, you will learn about the components of emotional intelligence (EQ) and participants will complete an EQ assessment to determine their areas of strength as well as areas for skill building. The benefits of increasing your EQ will be highlighted and strategies for strengthening your EQ will be provided.

The Great Work of Our Time

The Great Work of Our Time
Over historical time human civilization has altered the surface of the Earth in many ways. Our mistakes have led to catastrophic outcomes including biodiversity loss, toxic pollution, hydrological, weather and climate disruptions and infertility of the soil.   I have witnessed that it is possible to restore degraded landscapes including those that have been damaged over vast areas and long-time frames.  Humanity is called to act as a species on a planetary scale to ensure that future generations of life will inherit a fully functional Earth. This is “The Great Work of Our Time”.
