Your Guide to Sustainable Seafood

clams

At Rancho La Puerta, we eat a mainly vegetarian diet rich in fruits and vegetables, but we also include sustainable seafood and fish.  We consider it an important part of the diet for protein and diversity.  However, given the current environmental circumstances, not all seafood is created equal when it comes to dinner.

According to recent guest speaker, Dr. Victoria Maizes, Executive Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, below is a list of what is considered the best and good alternatives of seafood (choices are based on low toxicity and environmental practices).

Each fish is linked to its page on the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch list, so you can get the full details on exactly what are the best and worst choices to buy for each variety of fish.  There are still certain varieties of each fish (even under the best) that should be avoided due to environmental issues so please check the links to get the full details.

Good Choices:

If there is seafood or fish that is not listed, but that you particularly like, we recommend searching for it on the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch list.
