Día de los Muertos

The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a Mexican holiday observed over multiple days. It is a time when the living celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed. During this holiday people visit cemeteries to be with the souls of the departed, and build altars filled with food, drinks, pictures, and memorabilia. Flowers such as marigolds, or Flor de Muerto (Flower of Dead) often decorate the altars. Skulls (calaveras) are a common symbol of the holiday, and are represented in masks and foods like sugar skulls and pan de muerto, or sweet egg bread. Throughout the festivities, family and friends remember and honor the dead, and help support their spiritual journey.
