Avocado and Honey Hydrating Hair Mask

The Ranch’s cool pool summer is a blast – it includes everything from Water Polo on the Noodle to Aqua Board. There is even a new Feel Comfortable in the Pool class. If you love swimming or sunning, you probably know that hair can get a bit too dry if it’s not taken care of. With all the summer fun, it’s important to treat your locks well so they stay soft, shiny and hydrated. Nayeli P. Suárez Fimbres, The Ranch’s Villas Health Center Coordinator, shared her favorite do-it-yourself avocado hair treatment.

It contains:
  • Avocados: Full of Vitamin E and Vitamin B, avocados are a great source of healthy fats and nutrients that can aid in strengthening strands of hair, give them a healthy shine, and can stimulate growth. This goes for both using as a luscious mask or eating!
  • Honey: Locks in moisture and shine and has hair strengthening vitamins.
  • Olive Oil or Coconut Oil: Both add moisture, but coconut is lighter and won’t weigh hair down as much.
  • Lavender: Calms, refreshes, and soothes the mind and spirit. Known to prevent itchy scalp or even dandruff.

This conditioning recipe is simple to make and highly effective. It’s ideal for damaged, brittle, or dry hair. Not only will it add luster to your strands, but it smells delicious. If you don’t have Lavender oil on hand, you can substitute Tea Tree or Rosemary essential oils. Rosemary is known to invigorate and stimulate the scalp, as well as help hair grow. Tea Tree oil is widely used for its antifungal and antibacterial properties. It has a strong scent, so only a little is needed, and it may help with dandruff, psoriasis or other scalp conditions.*

 Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe avocado, peel and pit removed
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or coconut oil
  • Optional: 2 drops Lavender essential oil (can substitute Rosemary or Tea Tree essential oil)*
Directions:
  1. Mix all the ingredients in a food processor or blender until smooth and light in color.
  2. Appy the mask on damp hair, taking great care to focus on the ends. Gently rub into hair, being mindful to keep away from eyes. If any irritation occurs, wash the mask off immediately.
  3. Clip hair into a bun at the top of your head and then put on a shower cap. Blow-dry hair for 15 minutes or sit outside in the sun for about 30 minutes.
  4. Rinse the avocado and honey hydrating hair mask off, and wash hair as normal.
