Following Your Gifts with Dr. Nicole Andreatta

Learn about the discipline of positive psychology and explore the life-changing opportunity of understanding and accepting your unique gifts.

Glimmer Gazing
What triggers us seems to be on the tip of everyone’s tongue and it’s leaving us in a collective funk. Let’s change the conversation. Out with triggers and in with the glimmers. A glimmer is the exact opposite of a trigger; it’s a spark of joy, engagement, or connection. This can be anything from taking in the view on a beautiful hike or savoring a compliment on a job well done. In this session, Dr. A will outline the practice of identifying glimmers and savoring them daily. Surprise! It’s harder than triggers because our brains are hardwired for negativity.

Edge Your Way to a Meaningful Life
Being well-rounded is boring. Our edges are what bring excitement and meaning to life. Defined by the scientific discipline Positive Psychology as character strengths, our edges give us the tools to make our unique contributions. Join Dr. A in discovering the joy of embracing your edges to stand out in a world that has lost its way blending in.

Applying the Gift Lens to Your Life
Understanding the power of our gifts can give us a different lens for looking at our life and its meaning. Join Dr. Nicole Andreatta in this afternoon session to unpack life’s virtues and the gifts they represent. You will be invited to take a survey to get a glimpse into your own unique gift profile and learn how it can help you set goals in new ways. This invitation is not theoretical, it is practical, evidence based, and leads to deep, meaningful and positive changes in your life.

Responding to Challenging Times:  A Call to Ground in Our Gifts
Moments of adversity give us an opportunity to pull from our core strengths to bring meaning to hard times and give hope to those around us. In this workshop, Dr. A will discuss how our gifts are called upon during challenging times and what role they have in finding our way through?

Dr. Nicole Andreatta (Dr. A) is an executive coach that leverages a multidimensional approach to the science of human thriving. Combining decades of experience in neurorehabilitation and psychotherapy with the discipline of positive psychology, Dr. A helps people harness their gifts to focus their purpose–bringing more meaning to their work and more joy to their lives.

Food as Medicine

Food as Medicine
If food is medicine, can it truly replace pharmaceutical medications? Jill will take you on a tour of current dietary trends, discussing what works and what doesn’t work, and why a plan needs to be individualized. You will learn tips and tricks on how to fuel your body in the most positive way.

Superfoods and Supplements: What Do You Really Need?
Which are truly “superfoods” and why? We seem to have become a nation of people who take many supplements. Which ones might be good for you? How to tell? And why take them? In this session Jill Nussinow will discuss what you need to know to give your food a boost.

Nutrition for Best Brain Health and Good Sleep
Do you know that more people are concerned about their brain health, than any other part of their body? With real life and anecdotal reports on the increasing incidence of Alzheimer’s and other dementia, this makes sense as around 6 million people in the US have the disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association: “The number of people living with the disease doubles every 5 years beyond age 65.” Come learn the role of nutrition on brain health. Good sleep is part of the equation and Jill will discuss some ways to help you get good nightly sleep and what that looks like. These are important topics for our time. Both brain and body will appreciate it.

Your Gut, Your Health: Probiotics and Beyond
Come learn about the role that a “healthy and happy” gut plays in your overall health from head to toe, and everywhere in between. Jill will discuss prebiotics, probiotics and steps you can take to maintain good gut health, immunity and more.

Bridge Classes

Learn or refresh the fundamentals of the card game that’s both social and challenging, and whose enthusiasts range from the likes of Warren Buffett and Bill Gates to Omar Shariff, Buster Keaton, Harpo Marx, and Martina Navratilova. Ideal for people of all ages new to the game and those who used to play a while ago and want to refresh and update the basics. Limited to 12 people per 90-minute session.  You don’t need to come with a partner.  Advance sign-up required.  Some basic info sheets will be distributed. Bring notepad and pencil.

A:  BEGINNERS: Only pre-requisite is having played some kind of card game before. Learn how bridge is played and scored, its two parts–the Bidding and the Playing–how to evaluate hands, the point card system, bidding ladder, how to communicate to your partner, and play some sample hands.

B: REFRESHERS:  Pre-requisite is completion of Rancho Beginners Class, and/or anyone with previous experience playing bridge.  Review point count, get update on bidding systems and conventions, and engage in ‘supervised play’ – that is, you’ll deal and play out some hands and I will provide help when requested.

An avid social and duplicate bridge player since she first learned to play the game in her freshman year at the University of Michigan, Esther Margolis first started teaching bridge to others over fifty years ago when she moved to New York City and friends asked her to teach them.  This led her to start the school Bridge East, which she ran part-time with partners while working full time in the book publishing industry. She later sold her interest in the school to focus on her ‘day job’ while continuing to play socially.  As her career advanced, she unexpectedly found that knowing bridge introduced her into a variety of social and professional situations that were not only fun, but useful to her business.  She eventually became the SVP for marketing worldwide for Bantam Books, then founded her own publishing company, Newmarket Press, which she sold after 26 years to HarperCollins, and now consults and produces books for clients and other publishers.  Though she chose to cease playing bridge for a long time, eight years ago she decided to re-learn the game, taking refresher classes both in person and online, which revived her love for the game.  She is now delighted to introduce or refresh the game for you at Rancho La Puerta.

Jill Silverman Hough‘s latest cookbook is Finger Lickin’ Chicken, a mini e-book of recipes that are simple to make, yet special enough that you’ll relish every finger lickin’ bite. She also wrote100 Perfect Pairings: Small Plates to Enjoy with Wines You Love and 100 Perfect Pairings: Main Dishes to Enjoy with Wines You Love—both chock-full of delicious, doable recipes that make food and wine pairing fun, friendly, and absolutely unintimidating. Other book projects include co-authoring The Clean Plates Cookbook and developing the recipes for Skinny Bitch in the Kitch, a New York Times best seller.

Whether I’m writing cookbooks or working with magazines or brands, I’m all about happy cooking and delicious food.

My writing, recipes, and photography have appeared in magazines including Bon Appétit, Cooking Light, Napa Sonoma, Clean Eating, where I’m on the advisory board, and Fine Cooking, where I’m a contributing writer.

I create recipes for brands and commodity boards, too, including the National Pork Board, the California Milk Advisory Board, California Sweetpotatoes, Lindsay Olives, Annie’s Homegrown, Circulon, Anolon, and Grgich Hills Estate Winery.

Last by not least, I teach cooking to home chefs around the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. My classes are jam-packed with energy, enthusiasm, and immediately-useful information—plus, of course, delicious food.

My background includes a dozen years as an advertising copywriter at agencies in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. I launched my food career by opening a small cafe in Sausalito, which I ran for five unforgettable years and where we made—among other things—the world’s best chocolate chip cookies.
