Walking as a Way of Life

This program explores walking for fitness, recreation, and transportation, how to incorporate walking into your life, and what it takes to create vibrant, interesting places to walk.

Walking as a Way of Life
There’s a lot more to walking than meets the eye.  Ever since we took our first steps, we’ve been putting one foot in front of the other – it’s just something we do to get around.  But, we usually take it for granted and don’t give it much thought. As a way to enjoy nature, get fit, or just get from one point to another, walking is a great way to explore the world and get healthier.  This talk will explore how walkable places are good for social connections, the environment, the economy, AND our personal health, what makes a place great for walking (and why some places aren’t), and examine our individual and collective roles in building and promoting walking and walkable places.

Designing Places for Walkability
What does it take to create safe, attractive and comfortable walking environments?  Learn some of the basic urban design principles that underlie the places where we most like to walk, the transportation planning practices that balance walking with other modes of transport, and how to advocate for better walking environments in your community.

Walking for Fun and Fitness
Walking is one of the easiest ways to stay fit and active, lead a healthy lifestyle, and avoid obesity. We’ll explore ways to incorporate walking into your daily routine, discuss basic techniques for fitness and recreational walking, how to rev up your walks to increase health benefits, techniques for meditative walking and how to identify safe and comfortable walking routes in your community.

Walk Your Way to Fitness
Learn some basic techniques for fitness walking to help you bring health and energy to your life!  This workshop will cover walking techniques, including stride, posture, shoes, and stretches for warm-up and cool down with on-the-track instruction and evaluation.

Bush to declare the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands a National Monument in 2006.  As a cinematographer in feature films, Paul has collaborated with the most respected and innovative directors in the business, including Peter Weir (MASTER AND COMMANDER), Alejandro Iñárritu (THE REVENANT) and Terrence Malick (THE TREE OF LIFE).   On a 40-day epic voyage around Cape Horn, he filmed the storm sequence for MASTER AND COMMANDER, which won the 2004 Academy Award for cinematography.  His stunning visuals in THE TREE OF LIFE contributed to an Oscar nomination for cinematography, and Paul has continued to work with Malick on TO THE WONDER, KNIGHT OF CUPS and the legendary director’s most ambitious film to date, THE VOYAGE OF TIME. Paul resides in Hawaii with his wife and partner, producer Grace Atkins.

Enhancing Your Relationships for a Healthier and Happier Life

Enlightened Relationships: From Bedroom To Boardroom
A healthy lifestyle requires healthy relationships and healthy relationships require healthy interactions, communications, and negotiations. As social beings, we are interdependent, we must interact in order to survive. Unfortunately, most people have not learned the art and science of interaction. Learn to negotiate/navigate/guide your interactions toward a mutually fulfilling outcome in your personal and professional life. As in nature, humans and their interactions are subject to certain laws that we must honor in order to survive and thrive.  Learn the 8 Universal Laws of Enlightened Negotiation with emphasis on Effective Communications, Building Trust, the Power of Intention, the Significance of Creativity, and the Magic of Mindfulness.

Enhancing Your Relationships for a Healthier and Happier Life
Attain the Right Mindset, Choose the Proper Skillset to Achieve the Ideal Relationship.  Put your attention on your intention! Often in challenging interactions people react from a default mode with an automatic response, consciously or unconsciously, which is not healthy. This may compromise our relationship and create unhappiness or escalate to a conflict.  Learn a simple yet profound tool that liberates you from this trap. The choice of your behavior not only demonstrates your authenticity and clarity, it removes the guessing game for others and prevents conflict and makes a good relationship even better!  In this session, you will learn how to use The Law of Intention as a GPS or the guiding light of your behavior in any interaction or negotiation. We will also discuss The Law of Strength; you will discover the source of your strength in any interaction or negotiation and learn how to tap into that source.

Conscious Interactions for Healthier and Happier Life
Learn to Overcome Obstacles and Prevent Failure or Conflict by Using the Laws of Flexibility and Manifestation.  Similar to the idea of using your creativity to uplift your relationship, you can tap into your creativity to avoid conflict. Obstacles and roadblocks are part of interactions in any relationship. Learn how to maneuver and negotiate your way to your goal.  The main reason for an impasse in any interaction is lack of flexibility on either side as parties don’t see a viable option. Learn the golden role of brainstorming for co-creating options.   We are born to be creative. Our world is what we envision and create collectively. To create is to take inspired action to manifest the result that we want. The Law of Manifestation reveals the key principles in creating your desired outcome.

6th Annual Chamber Music Festival

Our 6th Annual Chamber Music Festival features ten of the world’s finest musicians who will inspire you with extraordinary performances set in the relaxed atmosphere of The Ranch. In addition to daily concerts, you can enjoy talks by the musicians, participate in music workshops and perhaps even encounter “random acts of music” in unexpected places throughout your day.

Featured artists: Gryphon Trio (Annalee Patipatanakoon, Roman Borys, Jamie Parker); WindSync (Garrett Hudson, Emily Tsai, Elias Rodriguez, Kara LaMoure, Anni Hochhalter); Patricia O’Callaghan, voice; and Monique Mead, violin.  Plus music critic and curator, Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim.

Gryphon Trio is firmly established as one of the world’s preeminent piano trios. For more than 25 years, it has earned acclaim for and impressed international audiences with its highly refined, dynamic, and memorable performances. The Trio’s repertoire ranges from traditional to contemporary, and from European classicism to modern-day multimedia. It is committed to redefining chamber music for the 21st century.

Violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon, cellist Roman Borys, and pianist Jamie Parker are creative innovators with an appetite for discovery and new ideas. They have commissioned over 85 new works, and they frequently collaborate with other artists on projects that push the boundaries of Classical music. The Trio tours regularly throughout North America and Europe. It enjoys longstanding relationships with prominent arts incubators and presenters like Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Orford Music Academy, Music Toronto, Ottawa Chamberfest, and Festival del Lago International Academy of Music in Ajijic, Mexico. Gryphon Trio often performs triple concerti with the world’s major symphony orchestras and smaller chamber orchestras.

WindSync has established itself as a vibrant chamber ensemble performing wind quintet masterworks, adapting beloved music to their instrumentation, and championing new works by today’s composers. The quintet eliminates the “fourth wall” between musicians and audience by often performing from memory, creating an intimate connection. This personal performance style, combined with the ensemble’s three-pronged mission of artistry, education, and community-building, lends WindSync its reputation as ”a group of virtuosos who are also wonderful people, too” (Alison Young, Classical MPR).

WindSync launched an international touring career after winning the 2012 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition and the 2016 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In 2018, they were medalists at the M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition. WindSync has appeared in recital at the Met Museum, Ravinia, Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. In 2015, the quintet was invited by the Library of Congress to perform the world premiere of Paul Lansky’s “The Long and the Short of it,” commissioned by the Carolyn Royall Just Fund and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

WindSync’s thematic programming responds to the people and places where they work. In Houston, they curate a 4-concert season and present the Onstage Offstage Chamber Music Festival each April, spotlighting everyday public spaces as gathering places for culture.

Patricia O’Callaghan is something of a wandering minstrel, with six solo albums and many interesting collaborations along the way. A speaker of French, Spanish, and German, her early recordings focused on European cabaret, but one of Patricia’s most unique talents is the ability to blend a variety of languages and musical genres seamlessly together in her concerts, and completely embody whatever style she is singing at any given moment. “This Toronto soprano can sing a 100-year-old German tune so lustily that you almost don’t need a translation to know that someone’s about to get his throat cut or get laid or both.” (The National Post) “O’Callaghan sings her diverse material as if it was always meant to go side-by-side and by the end of the evening, it’s easy to believe her.” (Chart Attack)

She has sung with some of the world’s great ensembles and artists (Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Don Byron Quartet, Bryn Terfel), and has performed in venues that range from London’s Royal Opera House to New York’s Noho cabaret Le Poisson Rouge.

Patricia also writes and co-writes songs and has had the honor of premiering many new compositions, from both the classical and pop worlds.  It has been her great privilege to work with such creators as R. Murray Schafer, David Braid, Dennis Lee, Christos Hatzis, George Aperghis, Steve Reich, and Steven Page, to name a few.

Patricia’s film, theatre and television credits include her own Bravo! special, The CBC produced Ken Finkleman series Foolish Heart, and the semi autobiographical Rhombus / Westwind film Youkali Hotel, which has won several prizes, including a Golden Sheaf Award to Patricia for best female performance. Ms. O’Callaghan has also received other awards, such as a Chalmer’s Grant from the Ontario Arts Council and a Fleck Fellowship from The Banff Centre for the Arts.

As a contributing critic for the New York Times Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim won honors for her fresh writing and for her ability to demystify classical music with empathy and humor. In print and in person, she is passionate about breaking down preconceptions and unlocking the wisdom and beauty of music.

Since creating Beginner’s Ear in 2019, Corinna has led live music meditations for a diverse range of listeners in places including a yoga studio, a high school, a federal detention center, a sunken garden and a dance studio. Each time, participants report experiencing deep feelings of stillness and ease.

Corinna uses meditation and sound to help people become better at listening – not just to music, but to themselves and each other.

Born to German parents in Brussels, Corinna obtained a B.A. in music and psychology from Royal Holloway College (University of London), an M.A. in Renaissance Theory and Culture and a doctorate from Cambridge University. She wrote her Ph.D thesis on the 17th-century Jewish Venetian poet Sara Copio Sullam. In February 2020 she completed the Mindfulness Teacher Training Program through MNDFL in New York City.

Corinna lives in Westchester with her husband, three children, and a goldendoodle named Lucky.

A passionate ambassador of classical music, violinist Monique Mead enjoys a rich career as a performer, educator, and innovator. Inspired and mentored by Leonard Bernstein, Monique has devoted her performing career to nurturing new audiences and curating extraordinary musical experiences. Her programs with major orchestras and festivals in the United States and Europe have drawn international acclaim for their popular appeal and innovative approach.

Interweaving live music with education and audience engagement at the highest level, her programs have reached millions through television appearances, a six-year radio series with the Munich Radio Orchestra, and over 20 years of concerts with the Cologne Philharmonic, Munich Symphony, Düsseldorf Symphony, Berlin Radio Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, San Diego Symphony, and the Mainly Mozart Festival, among others.

Since 2012 Monique has served as Director of Music Entrepreneurship at Carnegie Mellon University, where she trains musicians in community engagement, peak performance, and professionalism as she helps them forge new paths as professional musicians.

Monique performs on violin made in 1860 by J.B. Vuillaume which was gifted to her at age 19.  She enjoys hiking, yoga, homegrown cuisine, and performing with her talented teens, Isabel and Tino.

The Inner Runner

This unique run takes a mind-body view of running, examining how running affects every part of our lives, and enables us to look inward—at the inner runner—to find out who we really are and to embrace the challenge of discovering our true selves. For many, running is a pathway to experiences and emotions that cannot always be articulated. They must be felt. Running guru and author of The Inner Runner Dr. Jason Karp will lead inspiring outdoor group runs, exploring what it means to be a runner and how running helps you become the person you want to be.

A competitive runner since sixth grade, Dr. Jason Karp quickly learned how running molds us into better, more deeply conscious people, just as the miles and interval workouts mold us into faster, more enduring runners. This passion Jason found as a kid placed him on a road that he still follows as a coach, exercise physiologist, author of 12 books and 400 articles, and speaker. He is the 2011 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year and two-time recipient of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition Community Leadership award. His REVO₂LUTION RUNNING™ certification has been obtained by coaches in 25 countries. In 2021, he became the first American distance running coach to live and coach in Kenya.

Nurturing Your Emotional Health

A Mindful Approach to Stress
During this unique time of living with a pandemic, we have come to accept that stress is a part of daily life, yet many people struggle to understand that although stress can be a detriment to physical health and emotional wellbeing, it can also be a positive, motivating force. This presentation offers a mindful approach to navigating stress, change and challenges — participants will learn about signs of stress related to four dimensions of personal energy: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Research in the field of positive psychology will be highlighted and participants will be introduced to several natural antidotes to stress as well as pathways to cultivating lasting joy and meaning.

Natural Pathways to Well-being
The pursuit of happiness is a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence; however, it is left to individuals to determine the meaning of happiness. Researchers have provided varying definitions of what it means to be happy, but many of us struggle to feel a sustained sense of overall well-being.  COVID-19 has added a new appreciation for the importance of engaging in self-care – feelings of anxiety, depression, isolation, and loss are now more common than ever. This presentation will focus on providing strategies to not only cultivate happiness but to mindfully navigate change and improve your physical health and emotional well-being. Evidenced-based benefits of expressing gratitude, engaging in acts of kindness, and the importance of connection will be highlighted. Participants will learn ways to develop a growth mindset and will participate in mindful practice – leaving the session with a sense of empowerment to approach the challenges of life with greater emotional fortitude.

Boosting Resilience
Resilience is the ability to successfully bounce back from change or misfortune – living with a pandemic has required us to be agile and to adapt to new ways of living.  How successful have you been about navigating the stress and uncertainty of COVID, coping with personal losses, parenting, working, …? When people face adversity whether big or small, they need to apply their mental, physical, and emotional energy to adjust to new circumstances. A set of five characteristics have been associated with people who adapt well to stressful situations and life-altering events. During this session, we will review these five attributes and participants will have an opportunity to assess their current level of resilience and will learn practical ways to boost and strengthen your resilience.

How Emotionally Intelligent Are You?
What is emotional intelligence? How does it impact your relationships with family and friends, partners, and co-workers? During this session, you will learn about the components of emotional intelligence (EQ) and participants will complete an EQ assessment to determine their areas of strength as well as areas for skill building. The benefits of increasing your EQ will be highlighted and strategies for strengthening your EQ will be provided.

Pickleball with Roger BelAir

If you haven’t heard of pickleball, you soon will. It’s the fastest growing sport in America. The game is easy to learn, great exercise, and incredibly fun. It’s especially popular with active people over forty since it’s easy on the joints. Many people expect pickleball to be the premier participation sport of the future.

Pickleball is a combination of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton. It’s often called “Ping pong on steroids.”  The game was created near Seattle when kids going out to play badminton couldn’t find the birdies. However, they did find the net, a wiffle ball, and some ping pong paddles. A new game was born. In one 45-minute session you’ll learn the basics of the game, get exercise, and—most importantly—have fun!

Inspired by a CBS’s “60 Minutes” segment on crime, Roger envisioned pickleball as a means of teaching “life skills” in prisons.“96% of all inmates are eventually released. If we can make them better while they are on the inside, it’s safer for all of us once they are back on the outside. Today’s inmate is tomorrow’s neighbor.” he says.

Roger BelAir introduced the game to men charged with murder at Chicago’s Cook County Jail. “There is a magical quality about the game,” he says. “We learned gang members who wouldn’t even talk to each other, would be willing to play pickleball together. Soon they were laughing together.”

His successful program in Chicago led Roger to teaching at prisons from coast to coast, from Rikers Island in New York to Corcoran in California where Charles Manson served time.  His life-changing effort have been applauded in the media from NPR to a front page story in USA TODAY.

Off the court, Roger is a financial expert who has been profiled in a cover story of Money magazine; an acclaimed author of books on finance and investments; and a keynoter at business conventions. He’s been quoted in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and many other publications.

He knows finance, but pickleball is his passion.

Myofascial Release, Centering Alignment & Corrective Exercise Connection

For decades there has been an epidemic rise in the number of people suffering from common musculoskeletal imbalances that are not caused by an injury. These imbalances are caused by other factors, such as movement dysfunction, activity choices, prolonged static postures, footwear choices, surgeries and sedentary lifestyles. Many with common musculoskeletal imbalances do not need physical therapy, whereby corrective exercise is evolving to fill the gap in care. The use of musculoskeletal assessments, self-myofascial release, restorative stretching, and corrective strengthening exercises in health and fitness settings is fast becoming commonplace to help remedy and relieve muscle & joint discomfort and pain.

As a Corrective Exercise Specialist Laura’s skill set is focused on addressing the body as a whole and identifying underlying causes of chronic pain not just the symptoms and help prevent the body from breaking down in the future. A sequenced method of structural assessments, myofascial release techniques, stretching, body centering and corrective exercises are applied. The benefits of this training can result in not only the elimination of pain, but lead to a reduction in stress and improvement in active performance and functional daily living.

Beginning on Sunday and throughout the week each class will incorporate movement and usable information. We will focus on different zones of the body using several of the techniques mentioned above in order to give participants more structural awareness, pain alleviating “hacks”, and corrective exercises to be able to easily replicate at home. Friday’s class will wrap everything up, ending your week with an energized feeling, full of vitality – moving more functionally and feeling GREAT!

A great “adjunct” therapy to any exercise regime and functional daily movement activity. Laura enjoys educating her clients/students “beyond training” by teaching students “self-care” methods and how to advance performance in an injury-free setting.
