How, not if, the shoe fits… Lessons from the “shoe whisperer”

I have always admired runners, having tried, and failed, taking on the sport myself.  My legs became fatigued too quickly, and I had back and joint discomfort during my attempted runs.  This can also happen with extended walks.  I learned that the running and/or walking shoe makes all the difference.  Both running and walking gait are critical in selecting the best shoe for the activity.  It doesn’t have to be the most expensive shoe; it must be the right shoe.  There is a unique fitting for every athlete, and I have mastered the talent of identifying the right shoe for each of my clients.  In my programs, I will share with you the keys to identifying the right running, walking and/or hiking shoes specifically for you.  You can become the runner, distance walker and/or hiker you envy in others but have been reluctant to attempt yourself for fear of injury.

Running Shoe Fitting Method

Do your legs, feet, back or hips ache after a run?  A proper running shoe for your specific needs makes all the difference! I will discuss the fitting method I use, which may differ from others.  I will bring different shoes for participants to see so you can observe the differences in the shoes and how they fit. Every shoe does not fit every person, and my job is to help find the right fit regardless of brand.   I will talk about different methods of getting started.

Instructional/ Interactive Workshop – Running Shoes

How do you know what running shoe is right for you? I will guide the participants in the key to acquiring the best running shoe for their personal requirements.  By listening to their previous experiences, both good and bad, with running shoes, I will analyze your feet and make recommendations as to how to recognize a better shoe to meet your needs.  I will empower and energize you to take your running comfort and enjoyment into your own control.  When you return home from the Ranch, you will have the tools to acquire the right running shoes + Finding the Right Trail Shoes:

You prefer to hike or run on trails? There are many different types of trail shoes, and the grips differ as well.  We will talk about trail running, hiking or other, rugged terrain activities and how to identify the right shoes for you, for those activities.

2021 Winner of the “Best of Westchester” award, Ellen Brecher is an experienced running shoe consultant who owns and operates a running store in upstate New York.  Ellen also leads running workshops and organized runs with her customers. Ellen has a reputation for finding the best running shoe for each individual, recognizing that one size (or type) does not fit all feet or running styles, and is known as the “shoe whisperer”.

Music, Magic and Mayhem

Marshall Chapman is a multi-hyphenated American treasure. The singer-songwriter-author-actress was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on January 7, 1949. To date, she has released fourteen critically acclaimed albums. Her 2013 release, Blaze of Glory, was hailed a masterpiece. (Click here for NPR interview.) And the Associated Press proclaimed her most recent Songs I Can’t Live Without (2020) “perhaps her best.”

Chapman’s songs have been recorded by everyone from Emmylou Harris and Joe Cocker to Irma Thomas and Jimmy Buffett. (Click here for complete list.)

In 2010, Chapman landed her first movie role, playing Gwyneth Paltrow’s road manager in Country Strong. Of her three rockin’ albums for Epic, the Al Kooper-produced Jaded Virgin was voted Record of the Year (1978) by Stereo Review. Her album, It’s About Time… (Island, 1995), recorded live at the Tennessee State Prison for Women, drew rave reviews from Time, USA Today and the Village Voice.

Chapman’s first book, Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller (St. Martin’s Press) was a SIBA bestseller, 2004 SIBA Book Award finalist, and one of three finalists for the Southern Book Critics Circle Award.

Chapman continues to land film roles. In Mississippi Grind (2015) she plays the blues-singing mother of a drifter-gambler played by Ryan Reynolds. In Lovesong, which garnered glowing reviews at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, she plays the mother of the groom (Ryan Eggold) opposite Rosanna Arquette’s mother of the bride. In Novitiate, which opened to rave reviews at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, she plays a nun who loses her mind.

Be Quiet, Be Heard

The Hidden Dimension of Communication

A world of communication lurks below the surface of our awareness. When we are in conflict, this hidden dimension often catapults us into confusion and mind-bending emotion, thwarting creative resolution and conscious action. Drs. Glaser are former actors as well as award-winning researchers and university professors. They dramatize compelling conflict scenarios to demonstrate what happens when conflict invades our world and how to master seemingly deadlocked moments in challenging business, family, and personal situations.

Power Listening

When interpersonal pressure is on, listening is too often the first casualty. When dialogue turns to criticism, we often revert to unconscious auto-pilot reactions with defensive responses that may damage the relationship and make problems worse. This session provides a five-step model for transforming defensiveness and blame into insight and agreement. Speakers dramatize how trust increases when each person feels heard and understood.

Navigating Challenging Conversations

Why it is that people we care about too often feel defensive when we try to convey suggestions for improving their behavior and our relationship? How can we stop torpedoing our efforts and instead transform conflict into cooperation, discord into harmony, and make good relationships even better? This presentation provides a four-step model for raising issues that renders remarkable results: solving the problem, strengthening the relationship, and deepening trust – without creating a negative reaction.

Peter A. Glaser, PhD and Susan R. Glaser, PhD received their doctorates in Communication from the Pennsylvania State University. Authors of the internationally acclaimed book, Be Quiet, Be Heard: The Paradox of Persuasion, they have been married business partners and co-presenters for 40 years. Drs. Glaser have published three books and more than 40 research articles. Their research on transforming organizational culture has received the International Association of Business Communication Award for bridging communication theory and practice.  Feature stories have been written about them in Business Week, Newsday, Nation’s Business, National Business Review, Working Woman, Success Magazine, and the Washington Post. They have been featured speakers on every major university forum for entrepreneurship across the United States. They have also been presenters for Entrepreneurs Organization (EO), Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) and World Presidents’ Organization (WPO). The Glasers joined the faculty of the University of Oregon in 1975. For the last 14 years they have spent time in New Zealand and Australia working with leaders from both the private and public sectors. They work with federal, state, and local government leaders throughout the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., including their ongoing work with the U.S. Congress. www.theglasers.com, facebook.com/glasers, You Tube at the TheGlasersVideos and Twitter @TheGlasersInc.

Finding Your Creative Flow

The Finding Your Creative Flow program series explores the intersection of concentration and creativity through scientific research, mindfulness meditation and artistic practice.

Finding Your Creative Flow

The term “creative flow” refers to the state of being completely present and fully immersed in a task. Distractions fall away, time seems to warp, and ideas float up seemingly out of nowhere. But it is not magic. There is an extensive body of scientific research around the state of flow and how we can learn to manifest it in support of our chosen vocations. This evening’s program will explore how creative flow can be cultivated and nurtured through the practice of insight meditation. Appropriate for artists, athletes, scientists, executives and anyone else looking to find their creative flow in work and in life.

Finding Your Creative Flow Sessions:

Dismantle Writer’s Block

This session will begin with a short introduction to insight meditation. With our minds settled, we will turn our curiosity toward what motivates us as writers and examine what factors hamper our efforts to get words on the page. Through a series of mindful writing prompts we learn to recognize our inner critics, bow to them, and keep writing. Once we have a draft in progress, we will discuss how the Buddhist principal of Right View can help us to better edit our own work.

Writing Sensory Details

Whether building a fictional world, setting the scene of a memoir, or immersing a reader in a poem, specific sensory details bring written words to life. We will begin this session with a series of meditations on the senses, including touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste. With each, we will practice avoiding cliché by seeking out the precise descriptions that are uniquely our own. From there we will discuss how to carefully fold these types of sensory details into our writing without overwhelming the prose.

Character Development

To write well-rounded characters we must become students of human nature. By truly understanding what motivates our protagonists, antagonists, sidekicks and mentors we can portray them in compelling ways. This session will utilize a series of short meditations and writing prompts to help us build empathy and describe emotional scenes with conviction. We will discuss how attachment theory and unconscious patterned responses can dictate how our characters respond to their surroundings and how we can use that knowledge to write convincing characters.

Writerly Self-Care

This session will focus on creating space within ourselves for our creative work. We will discuss the science behind inherited trauma and learn what to do when overwhelming emotions arise. We will practice non-grasping for when things are going well. We will explore our motivations for writing and talk about the importance of holding some percentage of our work in a sacred space not intended for public consumption. All of these exercises can be useful in writing convincing characters, but (more importantly) they are critical for our mental health as writers.

Interwoven throughout is a moving personal family history of pain, loss, and resilience. This is an essential American story.”—George Takei

Shirley Ann Higuchi, chair of the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation and author of Setsuko’s Secret: Heart Mountain and the Legacy of the Japanese American Incarceration discussed her book on the  Ranch’s December “Chats with Barry.” She’s back to talk more about writing the book and the broader implications of this history. Join Shirley for a film screening of Setsuko’s Secret: The Origin Story (6 minutes) by Vanessa Yuille, a short film that focuses on the historical background of Setsuko’s secret: the Japanese American incarceration and Shirley’s impetus to write the book. The film is a quick historical dive through the lens of Shirley’s family’s experience pre- and during WWII. After the film, David Ono, Los Angeles ABC7 news anchor will lead a lively conversation with Shirley, Vanessa Yuille, and Kathy Saito Yuille who was born at Heart Mountain. Saito Yuille is Setsuko’s younger sister and Shirley’s aunt. Vanessa is Kathy’s daughter.

Short Film (6 minutes) screening followed by discussion.

What was Heart Mountain Incarceration Site?

“Heart Mountain is a spectacular and beautiful backdrop to a story of triumph and tragedy. Seventy nine years ago, an incarceration camp filled with 10,000 Japanese Americans sat in the shadow of the mountain. From heart warming to heart breaking, their experience of life in an American concentration camp reminds us of the fragility of freedom.” This is The legacy of Heart Mountain.

Many Americans have never heard of the American concentration camps during World War II. Few have been taken inside to see what life was like. The Legacy of Heart Mountain is a documentary about the Heart Mountain Incarceration Site and the people who were confined there. This film takes us there and through first person narratives and interviews shows how it changed these innocent people’s lives forever. Join us for a film screening of The Legacy of Heart Mountain followed by a panel discussion with the Award-winning filmmaker and ABC7 news anchor, David Ono, Shirley Ann Higuchi, Kathy Saito Yuille and Vanessa Yuille.

FACEism

“You see the face of a stranger. In the blink of an eye, your mind is made up. You’ve taken in their skin color, ethnicity, sex, age, clothes and accent. You think you know who they are as a person. That’s FACEism.” David Ono’s newly released Faceism series, several 5-minute episodes, engages us in difficult but necessary conversations “exposing often-ignored history, erasing stereotypes.”

Part of the Faceism series will be presented by David Ono who will share the genesis of the series and its evolution to what it is today. Followed by a Q and A session.

Short film screenings followed by Q and A.

Book Talk

Inside Setsuko’s Secret: Heart Mountain and the Legacy of the Japanese American Incarceration

join author Shirley Ann Higuchi in conversation with Ray Locker, author and journalist as they discuss the central characters in her book, their lives after WWII and lessons learned for today. Book signing to follow.

Since joining ABC7 in 1996, David Ono has witnessed history worldwide, covering Hurricane Katrina, Haiti’s earthquake and Japan’s tsunami. He traveled across Europe and Asia chronicling brave acts of the Nisei soldier from World War II. He attended the Royal Wedding in London, tracked drug runners through Central America and reported from Paris on a terrorist plot to bring down the Eiffel Tower.  Ono has trained with the FBI and the elite Los Angeles Sheriff’s SWAT team. President Obama invited him to the White House for an exclusive interview. And he witnessed white smoke at the Vatican twice – in 2005 for the selection of Pope Benedict the 16th and 2013 for the selection of Pope Francis. Ono surfaced in Boston, chronicling the marathon bombing. He has won seven Edward R. Murrow awards and 23 Emmys. David grew up in Texas and is a graduate of the University of North Texas. His career has included stops at KOVR in Sacramento, KDBC in El Paso, KOSA in Midland/Odessa and KXAS in Dallas. He has also hosted ABC7’s half-hour show Eye on L.A. This year, he led his network with his multiple Emmy Award-winning FACEism series.

Shirley Ann Higuchi discovered the deep connections her parents had to Heart Mountain when her mother was on her deathbed and requested that her memorial contributions be sent there.  It was then that Shirley discovered her mother’s secret dream of having “something built there” to memorialize what happened to her family and others during that period of time. Setsuko’s dream was realized when the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center opened its doors to the public in August 2011. Yet out of each negative experience emerges a silver lining and had the Higuchi and Saito families not been uprooted from their homes in the midst of wartime racism and hysteria, Shirley would not be here. Today, Shirley works to ensure that the WWII Japanese American incarceration experience is not forgotten by organizing public programming and speaking engagements around this important topic. Her book tour of Setsuko’s Secret: Heart Mountain and the Legacy of the Japanese American Incarceration continues well into 2022

Vanessa Saito Yuille  is a documentary filmmaker and a third generation Japanese American. Her mother was born at the Heart Mountain site. Her film An American Contradiction explores the historical context of the Japanese American camps through her own investigation and family history. It was screened at international film festivals and continues to be viewed as an educational resource today. She recently completed her first documentary feature Doctor Who Am I, and it’s currently out for festival consideration. Vanessa graduated from Barnard College with a BA in Astronomy and earned an MFA in film studies from the Academy of Art University. She lives in Los Angeles and is a freelance filmmaker and editor.

Kathleen Saito Yuille was one of the 556 children born at Heart Mountain, where her parents, two older brothers and older sister were incarcerated. After the war, the Saito family returned to San Francisco, where Kathleen graduated from high school before attending the University of California, Berkeley. She now lives in Milwaukee, where she became an active member of the Milwaukee Art Museum and served as board president of the Contemporary Art Society and as co-chair of two Contemporary Art Auctions, a major fundraising event for the purchase of art for the museum. She currently serves on the Milwaukee Art Museum Board of Trustees. She is now a tireless advocate for the preservation of the memory of the Japanese American incarceration, an interest that began when her daughter’s fifth grade class assignment rekindled her sense of family history.

Ray Locker is the editorial consultant for the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation. He has a master’s degree in journalism from Ohio University and a B.A. in political science from the University of Cincinnati. Before joining the foundation, he was an editor in the Washington bureau of USA TODAY, the managing director of the Investigative Project on Terrorism, the Sacramento bureau chief of the Associated Press, and an editor and reporter at the Los Angeles Times, Tampa Tribune and Montgomery Advertiser in Alabama.  He is the author of two books about the administration of President Richard Nixon – Nixon’s Gamble: How a President’s Own Secret Government Destroyed His Administration and Haig’s Coup: How Richard Nixon’s Closest Aide Forced Him from Office. He also worked with foundation chair Shirley Ann Higuchi on her history of the Heart Mountain concentration camp.

Love and Wisdom in Times of Change

Love and Wisdom in Times of Change: How to Live a Life of Courage and Authentic Connection

Courage is love in action. This evening we’ll discover how unlocking courage in our hearts encourages us to act from love. Love is a place to come from, not somewhere to go to or get to, a powerful personal practice and a stabilizer in the shifting sands of change.

Letting go of fear and welcoming love is more relevant right now than ever before. Research shows that the more we are wrapped up in fear, the more vulnerable we are regarding our health and well-being. Let’s discover how staying connected with ourselves and others stimulates our natural systems of health and vitality.

I’ll share 3 practices you can use at home, at work, and as a leader to strengthen your ability to face challenging situations with more equanimity, set healthy boundaries, and (at least most of the time) activate the voice of kindness.

In daily life and in business, when we connect to what we care about, where our deepest commitment lies, we become a wise and potent force for change. When we choose to believe and talk as if change is possible, our behavior matters, and challenges can be overcome we generate remarkable drive, passion, and vitality.

Session 1: The Power and Gifts of Love. In this time of continual change, confusion and uncertainty, connecting with each other, from and in a space of love becomes vitally important and profoundly nourishing. We’ll learn together about the kind of love that doesn’t require us to change who we are; and instead invites us to be who we are. Love that connects us with others and elevates our state of being so that the choices we make create the future we most want for ourselves and the community of all life. You’ll leave with your own Love Compass to orient you when you return home.

Session 2: Exploring the Magic of Mindsets. Our mindsets hold us back or set us free to fulfill our deepest dreams. Today we’ll explore the relationship between how we think and the way our life works. Inspiring stories of remarkable women and men who chose to change their mindset will give us a starting point for positive change. You’ll leave with Healthy Mindset practices to use at home.

Session 3: Communicating with Love in Business and In Life. They say, we don’t live as much in our life as we do in our conversations. When our inner-critic directs conversations, confidence diminishes and heart-felt connections are harder to maintain. In today’s session we’ll discover how to walk out of a reactive state, recover your compassion, and create more conversations that generate love.
