Inner Fitness Program

The Inner Fitness program is designed for accelerated transformation and awakening from the “Inside-Out”.  It is a comprehensive and practical program for people seeking to heal old wounds, navigate life with greater ease, learn to feel and communicate effectively, improve personal and professional relationships, cultivate inner peace, and manifest their uniquely authentic, fulfilling and joyous life.  And, Inner Fitness is fun!

Lesson 1: Change Your Mind
Yes, it’s possible to change our mind! And by change, I mean transform. We have a most incredible power to choose the way we see, interpret and respond to our life’s circumstances. Imagine putting on a whole new lens that quiets our well worn harmful patterns of thoughts and behaviors and allows us to see and respond with clarity and wisdom.

Lesson 1 focuses on self-awareness and cultivating the skill to shift from living in the default paradigm of fear and scarcity to living from wisdom, truth and love.

Lesson 2: Healthy Inner Dialogue
Do you ever wonder who’s doing all that chatting in our minds, and even more importantly, which voice we put in the drivers seat of our lives?  We are multi-dimensional beings with multiple voices expressing their opinions and directing our actions.  Sometimes it’s our wounded child or adolescent trying to express their hurt and anger, or our critical parent wagging its finger in judgement and shame.

Lesson 2 focuses on recognizing the various voices within and cultivating the voice of the Nurturing Parent who helps us navigate and respond to our inner world of thoughts and feelings and shows us how to live from our wise adult self so we can best respond to the challenges and circumstances of our life.

Lesson 3: Permission to Feel
Having access to our full range of emotions, and cultivating the skill to feel them instead of stuffing or bypassing them, is vital to living our most authentic, powerful and satisfying life.  When we know how to feel our emotions, and have the skills to express and communicate them responsibly, we feel more grounded, whole and connected to ourselves and others!

Lesson 3 focuses on understanding the world of emotions and the important role they play in almost every aspect of our life.  Come learn how to feel, navigate and honor your emotions with your greatest wisdom and highest intention.  You will feel better!

Lesson 4: The Joy of Responsibility
Have you ever noticed that we often play the same ‘victim’ story in our mind over and over again, and that we keep reacting to our life from that story, often in repetitive negative behaviors?  We get stuck in false emotions like blame, guilt and resentment; feeling powerless to make positive changes?

Lesson 4 focuses on recognizing our own patterns of thoughts and behaviors that hold us back from realizing our greatest sense of self and achieving our dreams.  Radical responsibility means seeing ourselves clearly, our strengths and our weaknesses, and taking full ownership of the impact we have on ourselves and others, both positive and negative. It’s our ticket to more freedom and joy!

Lesson 5:  Create and Manifest Your Best Life
We are always creating and manifesting our life, whether consciously or unconsciously!  Our life is a reflection of our inner world of thoughts, feelings, beliefs, attitudes, choices and decisions!  These are our raw materials that make up our life story and circumstances.

Lesson 5 focuses on re-aligning our raw materials to reflect our most authentic, powerful, and loving version of ourself to consciously create and manifest our deepest desires and sweetest life. Nothing changes until you do!

Remember, you are miraculous!

And may all your dreams come true.

Retrain the Brain for Greater Joy, Connection and Purpose

Strengthen Your Mindset: The Foundation
Each of us possesses the capacity to tap into our deepest desires in life and create a life that feels fulfilling and personally empowered.  The right mindset along with learning a few tools and strategies has everything to do with igniting our experience of joy, connection and purpose. When you know how to manage your mind, then you are able to get out of your own way and create a life that is joyful and fulfilling. This session explores the power of ‘mindset’ and how it impacts every aspect of life:

  • Discover how to ‘manage your mind’ with a simple strategy that can be immediately put into play
  • Learn a simple mini-meditation for greater inner peace, cognitive function, heart health, and increased immunity
  • Create a personalized ‘declaration’ or ’intention’ specific to you to set a positive context for your day

These three steps form a powerful morning ritual that takes less than five minutes a day to practice. When regularly practiced, this routine will change the way your brain fires and the body responds,  building your capacity to manage your mind and your reactions.

Build Your Capacity to ‘Take in the Good’
Gratitude is an emotion that relates to the ability to feel and express thankfulness and appreciation. Research shows that expressing gratitude improves mental, physical and relational health, happiness and well being. Although most of us know that we “should” feel grateful for our lives we tend to focus on what’s missing rather than the abundance in our lives. Gratitude unlocks the door to forgiveness—which is often key to expanding the experience of inner freedom. In this session participants will learn how to strengthen their capacity for gratitude and forgiveness.

  • Discover how to capture and amplify moments of joy and appreciation in real time
  • Recognize and savor the sweetness of everyday life even in the face of challenges, loss and transitions
  • Learn a two-minute gratitude exercise that you can practice daily for greater calm, focus and clarity

How to Grow Your Self-Compassion
Loving Kindness or metta is about developing peace, harmony and mutual well-being within our selves and with others. Through metta one learns to abandon bitterness and animosity and embrace goodwill. Metta, when practiced regularly, teaches unconditional self-love and love for others. A simple loving kindness meditation will be taught that participants can practice on a daily basis. This method takes only a couple minutes a day of practice. Over time it becomes internalized and changes your mind set and opens the heart.

  • Learn how to care for your mind and body with love and respect
  • Reframe negative self-talk and view life circumstances from a more positive lens
  • Discover how to forgive yourself and forge ahead

Strengthen Your Relationships Now
Learn to communicate more effectively with your partner, friends, family and everyone else in your life. Build the ability to listen generously and speak clearly from the heart— paving the way for true connection with others. Strengthening healthy and loving relationships with others is the most vital key to health, happiness and longevity.

  • Strengthen your capacity to listen generously and effectively
  • Learn to stop personalizing and making assumptions about what others say
  • Develop your ability to express yourself with clarity and focus

Discover Your Life Vision
Every day we have hundreds of choices to make about how we are going to show up in our lives. Without knowing where you are heading it is impossible to navigate life well or wisely. When clear about your personal vision, you are able to create an inner compass that informs your choices and actions going forward. The first step is knowing what matters the most to you and why.

  • Discover what matters most to you.
  • Examine the difference between what you do with your precious time and what you want to do.
  • Commit to certain action steps that move you closer to your vision every day.

Please note that each of these talks stand alone and also form a progression that supports you in creating a more joyful, fulfilling and meaningful life

Inner Fitness: Making the Unconscious Conscious

Excitement vs. Fear. It’s 100% Your Choice (Seriously)

Sometimes we can go on auto-pilot and feel like life is happening to us. We have limited or no choice in a matter which makes us feel overwhelmed. What if you could find more choice and feel more alive? Join us to learn a simple yet powerful practical framework to help you stand more in your power.

Stand in Your Power and Slay Your Inner Critic

Our brains can be our best friends or our worst enemies. And since our brain has a natural negative bias (out of survival needs) our negative voices can be very draining and keep us from living the life we want. Join us to learn how to mitigate the impact of your inner critic and quickly recover to your true authentic self.

Emotions101: Identify & Strengthen Your Emotional Muscles

Let’s face it, we human beings are experts at avoiding or denying our true emotions. Our emotions are a window into our truth. They provide real information and clarity. Join us to learn more about the power of your emotions, giving yourself permission to feel and develop a wider range of emotions.

Drop the Drama and Create Better Connections

All good stories have three types of characters: victim, villian and hero. This dynamic makes for great entertainment but we are often unaware that we are playing these roles in our personal lives. While it can provide short-term payoffs (like being “right”), the costs of maintaining unhealthy relationships are far greater.  Join us in learning a fun, easy game that will help you know when you are in the drama triangle and how to get out of it quickly!

(Re)Claim Your Authentic Self

We operate in a rapid fire world; skimming, sprinting, and stuffing as much as we can into each day – and then we wonder why our gas tank is empty at the end. In this final session, you will learn a simple process that can bring you greater energy and clarity so you can lead a more purposeful life.

As a leadership coach, Julie Fotos, PCC, CPCC works with individuals, pairs and teams to expand their range so they can access their full potential and reap all the benefits that come from it. Much like a trainer at a gym, Julie works with clients to strengthen muscles they did not realize they had, while giving over-developed muscles a rest. Julie believes people can achieve greater success by recognizing and “unlearning” their own self-imposed beliefs – which frees them up to realize their growth edge. Julie has extensive experience in designing and conducting programs on cultural/team development, communication effectiveness, leadership development, and managing through change. Recent clients include: CNN, Hearst Corporation, Oliver Wyman, Pfizer and Wieden + Kennedy.  Julie lives in New York City, but maintains her sanity at her little Catskills lake house.

Inner Fitness: Love and Mindfulness

Love is a feeling; loving is a skill. In this series of five talks, author and therapist Linda Carroll combines the practice of mindfulness and inner fitness with her work on relationships cycles.

The BIG SHIFT:  Mindfulness and Relationships
The big shift refers to the transition from outer connection to inner fitness; shifting from reacting to responding, from mindless to mindful, and from belonging to another to belonging to ourselves. Using the Love Cycles model from her two highly acclaimed books on the topic, Linda describes the stages of relationships, highlighting the challenges at each stage and demonstrating how mindfulness is the key to overcoming these challenges.

5 Basic Skills in Communication (PAUSE)
Communication defines the health of our relationships and communication under stress can be particularly challenging. Using the acronym PAUSE, Linda provides tools for developing a healthy inner dialogue, even when we are feeling the stress reactions of fight, freeze, or flight. She also offers insight into how to transform defensiveness and into open curiosity and encourage honest dialogue.

Neuroplasticity and the Five Essential Keys to Emotional Fitness
Having a high IQ might make you a genius, but having a high EQ makes you someone everyone else wants to be around. Join Linda as she shares tips for strengthening our emotional fitness with these 5 essential habits:

Habit #1: Self-Regulation
Habit #2: Awareness and Empathy for Others
Habit #3: Healthy Inner Dialogue
Habit #4: Understanding and Managing Triggers (when stress styles collide)
Habit #5: Recognizing Feelings

Powerful You
How does our impact on others affect us in leadership and love? This talk will show how you can cultivate the “gift of presence” and learn the three magic words that help others feel truly seen (Hint: it’s not “I love you”).

Create Your Best Life
Find out what it truly means to be “wholehearted.” Learn the truth about “self-love,” owning your story, and staying vertical in a horizontal world. Join Linda on a journey of the two main pillars in all relationships: connection and separation.

Linda Carroll holds a master’s degree in counseling and has practiced psychotherapy since 1981, specializing in couples and communication. She has been coaching since 2008 and obtained certification as a Life Coach in 2016. She works with couples in her private practice in Corvallis, Oregon, and coaches clients virtually, by phone, and in person. She has authored three books on personal growth and healing and is a frequent presenter at the Ranch on the topic of love and relationships. Her lectures feature material from her highly acclaimed book, Love Cycles, published by New World Library in 2014 and her upcoming book, LoveSkills: The Keys to Unlocking Lasting Wholehearted Love, which will be released Feb 14, 2020 by New World Library.

Linda grew up in San Francisco during the 1950s and came of age during the countercultural 1960s. From her more traditional childhood, she preserves a faith in the importance of service, mystery, and reverence for all forms of life. Find and Embody the Sunrise in Your Pocket

Just like we know for sure that the sun rises each day, whether the skies are cloudy or clear, so too can we rely on our inner strength and wisdom our most trusted teacher. Join Elena Sonnino – a sought-after guide for the things they don’t teach us in school – to find and embody the Sunrise in Your  Pocket. This series is designed to help you create space for awareness, to allow for more ease and curiosity in your life, and to unearth, attune to, and embody your inner strength and wisdom. Learn practical tools and mindset practices that you can integrate into your daily life with more ease.

Create Space to Live Your Fullest Life
Move out of survival mode to step boldly into your life.
To-do lists, deadlines, even healthy habits can put us on autopilot, and keep us from the hard work of giving ourselves permission to feel emotion. Transformation happens when we realize that is more to this life than just getting by, one check-list at a time and sometimes that means exploring and allowing emotions. Sometimes it means slowing down to pause and breath. In this session you’ll explore how your own habits and patterns are keeping you stuck and where you can create space for more awareness and possibility.

Mindset matters
Judgment will always be there. Love yourself anyway.
When was the last time you weren’t trying to change something about yourself? Get to know the stories and internal dialogue that echo in your brain, with awareness rather than judgment. Learn to move out of fixing mode, not-enoughness, and past or future thinking. In this session you’ll explore the practice of identifying, naming, and investigating the stories you tell yourself. You’ll make room for a new narrative grounded in your own inner wisdom and love.

Practice determination without expectation.  Ride the wave no matter what life throws at you.
We often hear about not having an attachment to outcomes. That life is about the journey, not the destination. But let’s be real: holding big, bold desires and dreams lightly enough that the outcome itself doesn’t make or break you – is hard. The practice begins when we explore how to cultivate attunement rather than attainment. You’ll learn to practice determination without expectation so that you can ride the wave without waiting for the finish line.

Embody your intention in the now
Stop waiting. Live your ideal life in the now.
Release the past and future to create space for living your ideal life. By attuning to how you want to feel rather than an outcome, we learn to live our days with intention. You’ll explore what it would look like and feel like to live your ideal life. Learn how to embody your intention with a holistic approach anchored in your values and your heart.

Say Yes to You
Create your personal roadmap to write the next chapter in your life.
Get out of your head and step boldly into your heart. Embrace your inner storyteller to visualize and manifest what feels most delicious in your heart. Create your own personal roadmap, guided by your inner strength and wisdom, to write the next chapter in your life.

Your Empowered Self: Voice, Values and Vulnerability

Opening Presentation: Being Your Best Self
Many of us don’t think about our inner self. We spend time on our physical body and spend time cultivating our mind, yet the inner place where our body and mind meet is often unexplored. It is at that place, where our spirit lives, where our true self resides. Being your empowered self means cultivating all aspects of the self, even those deeper places we’d all prefer to keep hidden. Our empowered self exists where courage, kindness, truth and power meet. It’s where we can own our shadow and admit flaws and liabilities. In doing this, we are able to be vulnerable and open with people in our lives. We are able to speak our truth, take risks, and live bravely. Come discover what it takes to find your best self, owning all parts of who you are, to live life to your fullest potential.

Workshop 1: Values: Knowing What Matters Most
The first step in knowing who you are and how to be the best you is knowing what is most important to you. In this session, participants will explore their values and think about what matters most in their life. Often, there is a disconnect between what we say we value and how we actually live our life. This creates an inner tension that can result in stress and overwhelm. It can create conflict in our relationships and get in the way of our work. Once you establish what matters most you can create intentions and establish strategies for bringing those aspects out in your life.

Workshop 2: Sense of Self: The Power of our Story and the Story of Our Power
Often we get in our own way. Elements of our shadows and the things we are ashamed of cloud our sense of who we are and compromise our confidence and self-esteem. Acting authentically and feeling comfortable in our sense of self is critical for inner peace and happiness and outer fulfilled expression. In this workshop we will explore who we are, how we move through the world, and how we bring ourselves to our life. We will explore the stories we tell ourselves, including the stories we have made up about ourselves. We will examine which of those stories accurately reflect our powerful self, and which ones might be the critical voices of others that hinder us and hold us back. Working creatively, we will get to know who we are and how to embrace a sense of ourselves that empower and embolden us.

Workshop 3: Voice and Your Empowered Self
Our voice is a key aspect for how we engage with others. Our voice has two elements: the voice we speak out loud, and the silent voice constantly in our head. Too often, we find ourselves in situations where we feel silenced or unheard. We often fail to advocate for ourselves and for what we believe in. This can occur in relationships with our significant other, with family members, with friends or colleagues. Sometimes, we avoid raising issues because we are worried about the consequence, so instead, we stay silent. Often, resentment builds, hurt feelings remains, and we feel less empowered. Finding and using your authentic and powerful voice takes strength, skill, and courage. In this session, participants will discover how to use their voice from a place of strength and kindness, learning the conditions that compromise their communication.

Playing with the Rain

The Art of Playing with the Rain
As fresh clean water becomes more and more precious, we are all being encouraged to transform our relationship to water: to truly treasure it. Who better than artists to inspire us?

We’ll explore ways (from wacky to poetic) that artists “dress up” rainwater catchment and storage—hopefully alleviating some folk’s aversion to anything they view as industrial.

We’ll also consider alternatives to “disposing” of stormwater (with its accumulated pollutants) directly into the nearest waterway. Increasingly artists are included on design teams treating stormwater as a valuable resource, not only for its life giving properties, but for the spectacular beauty it can contribute to any project.

Warning— HIDDEN AGENDA: you may feel compelled to go home and play with your rain!

(So a few tips will be included.)

Twice Is Nice:  Reusing Your Lightly Used Greywater
Have you been wondering why that perfectly clean cold water in your shower has to run “away” while you’re waiting for hot water to arrive? Are you one of those heroic people who captures it in a bucket and carries it to the garden?

We’ll explore simple, low tech, low cost, low maintenance greywater systems for irrigating the garden, and also glance at some higher tech drip irrigation systems.

More importantly we’ll discuss why it is so beneficial to reuse this greywater rather than “disposing” of it, and consider new initiatives to have “greywater ready / drought ready” plumbing installed during residential remodeling and new construction. This enables a greywater irrigation system to be added in the future with much less cost.

As we increasingly recognize that every drop of water counts, we need to regard greywater as a precious resource!

Christina Bertea
As a union-trained contractor, Christina plumbed alternative straw bale and rammed earth residences, eventually designing and building a passive-solar rammed earth house in downtown Oakland (fully permitted). In 2008 she teamed up with the Greywater Guerrillas, shifted focus to alternative water systems, and in 2009 helped craft the breakthrough CA Greywater code that legalized the systems they had been teaching. With the now mainstream Greywater Action she continues to instruct hands-on workshops where homeowners learn to install greywater and rainwater systems.

As a permaculturalist, Christina is excited about the emerging awareness of the importance of living soil —and especially the capacity of microbes to sequester carbon from the atmosphere into the soil where it exponentially increases the soil’s water holding capacity. This bodes well for healing climate chaos.

The producer of Women Eco Artist Dialog’s Art+ Activism series, Christina makes eco art that slyly disseminates solutionary ideas.
