Volleyball with Suzanne Hebert

Born and raised in New England with deep Massachusetts roots, Suzanne Hebert has called Los Angeles home for the last 19 years—but her love for volleyball has been a constant since she first picked up a ball in Bellingham, MA at age fifteen. Her natural talent caught fire through years of competitive play, capturing the attention of Junior Olympic recruiters during her high school career. She went on to play Division I volleyball at the University of Rhode Island, thrilling her home-state crowd at the NCAA Final Four.

Now in her fifth year presenting at Rancho La Puerta, Suzanne has mastered the art of making volleyball accessible, energizing, and genuinely fun for everyone—whether you’ve never touched a ball, haven’t played in decades, or are a seasoned regular. Her approach is encouraging, adaptive, and community-focused, ensuring every guest leaves feeling accomplished and maybe a little surprised by what they can do. Plus, it’s an incredible full-body workout disguised as play.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with an MSW from Simmons University and a Doctorate in Business Management and Organizational Leadership, Suzanne has a thriving private practice in both in-person and teletherapy and as a Mental Health Consultant for large organizations. She brings the same patience, humor, and insight to the court that she does to her work helping people navigate life’s challenges. She knows how to meet you where you are, build your confidence, and make the journey enjoyable.

Join Suzanne in the water or on the sand and discover what guests return for year after year: a class where you’ll learn, laugh, connect—and walk away genuinely proud of yourself.

Therapeutic Yoga with Stacey Filice

At its core, Yoga is a philosophy that guides individuals on a journey to living a more joyful life. It is not just about physical poses; it is a system that is designed to bring union to the mind, body and soul which improves your relationship to yourself and to the world around you. Yoga Therapy is an intervention that specifically uses the healing lenses of Yoga philosophy to discover body/mind/spirit correlations to dis-ease.

Throughout the week we will explore how yogic practices can support common physical challenges (eg, backs, hips, knees, etc.) as well as those related to emotions and the nervous system (eg, stress, anxiety, etc.). Each session will include Yoga asana (postures) and may also incorporate pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation, Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep) or guided deep relaxation during which true deep healing may occur. All levels are welcome and appropriate for these sessions! Experienced practitioners will have an opportunity to deepen their practice and their understanding of all that Yoga truly is. Beginners and those with physical limitations will be offered variations. Everyone will leave these sessions feeling centered with a deeper connection to the True Self.

The Gyrokinesis Method with Karen Burka

The Gyrokinesis Method is a movement method that addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences. It is an original and unique method that coordinates movement, breath and mental focus.

1) Beginning Gyrokinesis: Basic movements performed on stools and standing

2) Advanced Gyrokinesis: In this class we will continue our Gyrokinesis practice but explore more advanced choreography. Exercises will be performed on stool, floor, and standing.

The Choreography of Breath:
The Choreography of Breath is a breathing and movement modality created by Master Trainer Karen Burka. In these classes we will inhale, exhale, and move. This will prepare the body for optimal breathing by harmonizing, detoxifying, and opening the chambers of the brain and lungs. You will feel more open, stimulated, and balanced.

Karen Burka’s love of movement led her to San Diego State University where she obtained a B.S. degree in physical education and sports medicine. She then joined Santa Monica College’s International Touring Dance company and even designed some of the costumes, leading her to her next career as a fashion stylist to the stars. In 1995, she became certified in the Pilates and Gyrotonic methods. Karen has been sharing with groups and private clients for over 30 years and always continues study and grow. She is now a Master Trainer in the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methods and has now become specialized in Breathwork with movement. Karen has created “The Choreography of Breath” which is her own special movement methodology that prepares, harmonizes, and opens the body to allow for maximum optimization of breath. Karen is based in Santa Barbara, California but travels the world offering instructor courses, workshops, and retreats.

Tai Chi and Qigong with Cari Shurman

TAI CHI – Animal Frolics  (morning class)

Tai Chi and Qigong grew out of the observation and understanding of energy flow in nature: the balance, interaction, strength and flow of chi. The energy flow in our body works in these same patterns. There is interaction and reaction. Tai Chi improves the flow of chi for better coordination, relaxation, balance and strength so we can have  longer, healthier lives. The morning Tai Chi class will focus on a powerful 15 minute Tai Chi wake up for extra energy as we start our day. The animal frolics are fun to do and easy to remember. We will do the elephant, the flying crane, the dragon, fish, lion and tiger. The grace and power of the animals feels very good. The focus improves balance and muscle tone to reduce falls, and improves relaxation and circulation. It is fun and feels good. You are ready for the day! It is the perfect complement to other sports, exercise, and activities. A little Tai Chi everyday makes a big difference in everything else you do.

QIGONG – The Grandfather of Tai Chi. (afternoon class)

For over 4000 years the Chinese have practiced Qigong movements for better health and longevity and the internal harmony of the body.  We will practice focused movements for each of the organ systems – heart, lungs, stomach, intestines, liver.  Five Element Qigong  helps us feel the balance of the elements of nature and the elements of the body.  Improved our balance, strength and flexibility help us experience more restful sleep. The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi calls Tai Chi (and Qigong) the perfect exercise for healthy aging.  It has beneficial impact on the heart, bones, nerves, muscles, immune system and the mind. It helps to reduce falls.  It can even be done seated or lying down.

Tai Chi (and Qigong) help preserve the bodys physiological complexity, the ability to adapt flexibly to the challenges of aging. This translates into longer life, greater stability, and a deeper sense of connection.  Dr Peter Wayne, Harvard Medical School.

The two classes complement each other. You are welcome to attend one or both. You may join at any time during the week.

Cari Shurman discovered Tai Chi and Qigong in 1985 on her first of many trips to China. The flexibility, balance, and focus of the people doing Tai Chi in the parks awakened her interest in these exercises for health and longevity. Then she saw that students in the public schools did flowing movements to start the school day with better focus. Could students in other countries gain the focus and concentration she saw among Chinese students? She was excited about the possibility. For the next 10 years she studied and worked with her own students. She returned twice to China to study with masters there. She was astounded at the results. This led her to develop a program for children that is done all over the US and beyond: Tai Chi for Kids©. These years of teaching, studying and trying out new ideas with all ages led her to write and publish a book. This book of poetry, drawings, and QR codes for audio guidance gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy the focus, fitness and well-being of Tai Chi. Tai Chi for Kids And the Adults Who Love Them was published in June 2025. The simplified movements are perfect for beginners of all ages.  Her adult classes, live or Zoom, help participants stay involved everywhere. Their stories of feeling happy, relaxed and balanced, of reducing pain and stress, of improving focus and positive energy are inspiring.

It is wonderful to hear from those who have done Tai Chi or Qigong with me at the Ranch how life changing it has been to discover, feel and understand Tai Chi and Qigong. I have seen over and over again that Tai Chi and Qigong can change your life.

Ageless Athletics – Training for Brain Health and Longevity with Eric Cruz

We all know that falls and cognitive decline are major issues as we age. Most physical training as we age focuses on muscular strength, bone health, balance, and flexibility. But what if I told you that training like a professional athlete is the missing key to fitness for older adults. Ageless Athletics focuses on training your neuromuscular system to sharpen your mind, avoid falls, and prepare you for the long and unpredictable game of life. This series is built for all abilities and health states. Whether you’re battling Parkinson’s and MS or just want to continue living your best life without asking your body for permission to do the things you love, Ageless Athletics will give you the tools to win.

Schedule:
Sunday PM – Intro Lecture
Monday AM – Level 1
Tuesday AM – Level 2
Wednesday AM – Level 1
Thursday AM – Level 2
Friday PM – Lecture

We all want to live a long and (more importantly) vibrant life. What if I told you the key to unlocking this through the exercise door is by training like an athlete? Think you’re too old for this? Think again! The revelation of neuroplasticity tells us that our brains are always changing and adapting. If we feed the brain the right information and test it through movement, we can fight off cognitive decline. In this 4 session series, we will have 2 fitness training sessions and 2 hybrid lecture with movement classes. Our fitness sessions focus on using movement and exercise to challenge our brain and nervous system to keep us sharp and mobile as we age. This class can be modified for all fitness levels. Our hybrid lecture sessions will dive into the constantly emerging research that shows us how we can preserve and optimize our brain health while teaching some easy but powerful techniques to maximize brain function and while improving mobility and joint health.

Eric Cruz
I started my fitness journey at an early age trying multiple sports growing up.Before I moved to California, I grew up in the waterpark capital of the world in Wisconsin Dells. Through this experience, I’ve worked with people from all over the world and had many unique/interesting job positions; such as lifeguarding at the world’s largest outdoor waterpark and working on stage in a magic show. I’ve participated in swimming, softball, yoga, tennis, horseback riding, cheerleading, strength training, and more throughout my life.

While I was in high school I started to notice my friends and family needing physical therapy more and more and I wanted to be able to help. When trying to decide a major for college, I couldn’t imagine myself doing any other profession besides fitness/health. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise & Sports Science – Fitness Track from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. Since then, I have certifications in multiple things from TRX, yoga, Strong Nation, swim basics, & more. Before graduation, I chose against going for physical therapy because I found I’d rather be working with training clients directly.

Within my fitness career I have experience with coaching cheerleading, personal training, group fitness, corporate wellness, virtual training, nutrition, seniors, special needs, athletes, post physical therapy patients, senior homes, hospital settings, weight loss, bulking, etc. I am always interested in working with any other types of populations and gaining more experience. In my free time, I enjoy taking hikes, trying new things, beach/pool days, DIY/crafty things, and spending time with my friends/family/cats. When a new opportunity or experience presents itself to me, I am always willing to say yes and at least try something new.

Advanced players will practice dinking drills, offensive & defensive lobs, focus on being more strategic at the net, learn when to speed up the game, practice resets and block shots. We will drill in the transition zone to move to the NVZ line. Fun drills to practice how to finish and win a game. Players at this level will have an opportunity to play their game.

Gloria Domínguez, a native of Mixtlán, Jalisco, grew up immersed in traditional Mexican cooking—milking cows, shelling corn, and grinding masa on the metate. These early experiences shaped her lifelong commitment to preserving and sharing Mexico’s culinary heritage.

She opened her first taquería with her sister, offering classic antojitos found in Mexican markets and fondas, including gorditas, sopes, tacos al pastor, and tortas. In 2005, she founded Tamarindo Antojería Mexicana in downtown Oakland, where she introduced regional Mexican cuisine alongside her son, an architect and passionate advocate for Mexican gastronomy.

Gloria has collaborated with and cooked alongside renowned chefs such as Celia Florián and Abigail Mendoza and was invited by the Mexican Consulate in San Francisco to explore and present Oaxacan cuisine. Her restaurant has been recognized among the best in the Bay Area, and her work appears in The Best Chefs of the Bay, featuring two of her recipes.

A dedicated ambassador of Mexican cuisine, Gloria has participated in leading gastronomy festivals and conferences across Mexico and the United States, including Morelia en Boca, Saber del Sabor, Paralelo Monterrey, and the Festival del Mole in Puebla. She has taught cooking classes at Rancho La Puerta in Tecate and hosted traditional cooks such as Benedicta Alejo at Tamarindo Antojería Mexicana.

Gloria has had the honor of cooking at the Vatican for Navidad en México and was invited to the World Forum on Gastronomy as a Mexican chef representing the United States. She continues to work closely with traditional cooks throughout Mexico, most recently in Tabasco with the Zoque community and local cooks, preserving ancestral techniques and regional flavors.

Romney Steele is a cook, writer, and artist, and the co-owner of The Cook and Her Farmer, located in the historic Swan’s Market in Oakland, California. She is the author of two cookbooks, My Nepenthe and Plum Gorgeous.

Raised at the legendary Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur—founded by her grandparents in 1949—Romney developed a deep connection to food, hospitality, and place from an early age. She later opened Café Kevah, situated on the grounds of Nepenthe, before establishing her long-term home in Oakland, where she has lived and worked for more than 20 years.

As a writer, Romney has contributed articles and recipes to leading national publications, including Bon Appétit and Saveur. She has taught cooking classes to both children and adults and is a frequent guest instructor at La Cocina Que Canta at Rancho La Puerta in Tecate, Mexico.

Jonathan McCloud Vintner, Chef &Culinary Philosopher & Author

Jonathan McCloud is a vintner, Chef, culinary educator, and wellness advocate who discovered the transformative power of intentional nutrition when his own life depended on it. As President and Co-founder of Musea Center for Intentional Creativity, he operates culinary and wine-making operations at the Musea Campus in Sonoma, alongside visionary artist Shiloh Sophia. Through his writing, teaching, and the simple act of gathering people around what he calls “The Intentional Table,” Jonathan shares a philosophy of nourishment that changed everything for him and continues to guide others home to wellness.

Jonathan’s culinary foundation was built in the exacting kitchens of legends, where he trained under legendary mentors Charlie Trotter, and Andre’ Soltner nearly three decades ago. Those formative years instilled in him not just technical mastery, but a reverence for hospitality as an act of presence, and the understanding that how we feed ourselves and others is never just about food, but about care, connection, and the quiet rituals that hold our lives together. He has also served in the legendary kitchens of Commanders Palace, Bradley Ogden, and Saison.

When cancer arrived suddenly, Jonathan faced a reckoning. The question wasn’t just how to survive, but how to truly live. The answer, he discovered, lay in returning to first principles. He rebuilt his health from the ground up through nutritional density, intentional eating, and the wisdom of whole foods. This journey became the foundation for his book, Thrive! Unleashing Your Body’s Innate Resilience with Nutrition, where he distills complex nutritional science into accessible, embodied wisdom, and proof that our most powerful medicine often begins with what we choose to put on our plates.

Today, as a farmer, Chef, and vintner in Sonoma, Jonathan practices what he teaches. He tends land and vines with the same intentionality he brings to every meal, every glass of wine, every conversation. Through his Substack, “The Intentional Table,” he explores conscious eating, nutritional density, and the philosophy of gathering with a contemplative lens that transforms information into genuine nourishment. His voice is intimate and conversational, like sitting across from an old friend who knows that the best wisdom is always served alongside something delicious.

Jonathan’s approach honors what the founders of wellness movements have always known: that true health is built on simple foundations, like whole foods, mindful choices, and the courage to show up at the table, again and again. His mission remains beautifully uncomplicated: to create space where everyone belongs, where we break bread with intention, and where the simple act of nourishing ourselves becomes an act of transformation.
