Family Food Feuds!

Family Week at the Ranch is the perfect time for a little healthy competition! Join nutritionist-in-residence Tamara Freuman for a fun opportunity to learn about nutrition and local food traditions; play with your food; and use your knowledge to compete with your Ranch family for cheap prizes and priceless bragging rights. (Everyone wins when you leave the Ranch with some healthy new nuggets to bring back home!)

Family: Sensory “Circuit Training” Competition: Local Foods of Mexico!
Love Mexican food, drinks and treats? Think you’re a Super smeller? Terrific taster? Fabulous feeler? If so, bring your all to a circuit training workout unlike any other! This competition will put your senses to the test as you sniff, taste and touch a variety of local foods while blindfolded, and compete against other teams to identify as many of them as possible.  Your familiarity with the local flavors and scents of Mexico will come in handy, as will your love of adventurous eating! (Note: the event will be nut-free.  Please inform instructor of any food allergies prior to starting so that your tasting circuit can be adjusted.)

Teens/Adults: What is a Healthy Diet, Actually (according to science)?
Parents, health teachers, athletic coaches and social media influencers are always telling us what to eat… and what not to eat.  The problem? They don’t always seem to agree.  If you’re interested in knowing what the science says about what constitutes a healthy diet, how much sugar really is *too much* sugar, special fueling considerations for athletes, and whether breakfast is truly so important… this session should clear up some of the most common questions and controversies.  Bring your own questions, too!

ChildrenThe 5th Annual Great Guacamole Throwdown

Tweens: The 5th Annual Great Guacamole Throwdown
Think you have what it takes to make authentic Mexican guacamole?  Learn what makes a great bowl of guac and compete against your fellow Ranchers to create your signature version of this beloved dish.  You and your teammate(s) will choose from a variety of fresh ingredient options and use a traditional molcajete and tejolote(Mexican mortar and pestle) to craft your delicious creation!  Our panel of three expert judges will taste all of the creations and award prizes for the best-of across several categories.

Teens: 3rd Annual RLP Cake Boss Studio: Quinceañera Fruit “Cakes”
The quinceañera is a time-honored Mexican tradition that celebrates a girl’s 15th birthday, similar to an American “Sweet 16.”  No celebration is complete without a showstopper of a multi-tiered decorative cake. In this healthy competition, you and your teammates will compete to create the most beautiful, elaborate “cake”—made entirely of fresh local fruits carved into creative, decorative, Instagram-worthy imposter cakes.  All the gorgeous creations will be devoured by fellow guests for dessert later that night, so keep those cakes rated PG, kids!

Eden Vardy is dedicated to doing his part in solving climate challenges so that future generations can thrive. With that goal, in 2008 he founded The Farm Collaborative (www.farmco.org), “a collaboration for regeneration” that focuses on regenerating the local food system, one community at a time.

Under Vardy’s leadership, the organization made 0% interest loans to over 50 burgeoning farmers and food entrepreneurs through a pioneering “gift- circle investment club” model, launched a multi- stakeholder support ecosystem to grow new farmers, took ownership of the award winning edibleAspen magazine (where Vardy served as publisher), and hosted a program focused on innovating in crop production and stewarding regenerative agriculture regionally. The Farm Collaborative is now building a first of its kind learning campus in Aspen that will showcase integrated agriculture while pioneering a farmer”renaissance” of young leaders dedicated to a better future.

In 2019 Colorado Governor Jared Polis appointed and the senate confirmed Vardy to the state’s Parks and Wildlife Commission to represent agriculture. Vardy was appointed for a second term in July 2022, and confirmed with rare bi-partisan support unanimously by Colorado’s congress. In 2021, Vardy was selected as the Eisenhower Agricultural Fellow and met with policy makers, farmers, and community leaders in the EU and Brazil to exchange ideas for best practices to support the next generation of small holder farmers. In 2022, Vardy was selected as a “Food Leaders Fellow” as part of the inaugural cohort by the Aspen Institute. Vardy has presented at over 30 conferences and consulted community organizations across the globe, including in Israel, Uganda, France, Brazil, Mexico, and around the United States. Vardy is an avid percussionist and a proud father.

How Many Mondays Do You Have Left with Jodi Wellman

How Many Mondays Do You Have Left?
The practice of memento mori—acting on the Latin phrase that translates to “remember we must die,” has the profound potential to wake us up and breathe more life into our lives. While focusing on the end of our days may sound more morbid than meaningful, the contemplation of death allows us to appreciate the scarcity of the very time we’re looking to make the most of. In this interactive workshop rooted in the science of positive psychology, we’ll talk about how we can be more mindful about living the lives we’d love to live, and actually start living those lives… today, without a Monday to spare.

Widening and Deepening Your Life with Vitality and Meaning
In a world consumed with expanding the length of our lives, cultivating a more intimate familiarity with our mortality can help us expand the metaphoric width and depth of our lives as well. We make our lives wider when we fill them with vitality and gusto—expanding the breadth of the pleasurable experiences that life has to offer while blasting us out of our autopilot tendencies. We make our lives deeper when we infuse them with meaning and purpose—elevating ourselves out of empty or mundane existences into lives that feel like they matter. In this workshop we will action-plan your ways to live wider and deeper.

Living a Regret-Free Life
Regrets have a bad reputation, don’t they? No one wants to get to the end of their lives with a litany of “coulda, shoulda, woulda” woes. In this workshop we’ll delve into insightful research that shows how regrets can actually motivate us to change our behavior and better the circumstances of our lives. Let’s leverage our priorities and shape our remaining days to align with what we now see really matters in our lives. We’ll get reflective and contemplate our own paths not taken, and identify specific action steps to course-correct our regrets-in-the-making … to help us wake up to the lives we really want to be living.

What Kind of Legacy Do You Want to Leave Behind?
This workshop provides an inspirational, action-oriented approach to showing up as the kind of person whose impact resonates and influences long after you’re gone. You’ll get strategic about your deeply held values and long-term vision that will outlast you after you’ve left your team/ business/ family/ whatever environment matters to you. We’ll use your mortality as a motivator to live AND lead your choices with intention. We’ll get you zeroing in on the fact that you won’t live forever—and we’ll use that crucial awareness as the spark plugs to start living and leaving a conscious impact behind you.

Well-Being That Actually Works
This workshop is like an immersion course in all things well-being—with the answers to the test on how to live a life well-lived. You’ll assess your current state of flourishing (or floundering), identify your personal well-being gaps + traps, learn about the latest research-worthy hacks to live life well, and walk away with deliberate steps to live on purpose. This is perfect if you’re looking for a paint-by-numbers approach to participating more fully in your life… to ultimately increase life satisfaction, productivity, and results.

Paths to Published: Transforming Your Nonfiction Idea into an Attractive Published Book

“I’d love to write a book—but I just don’t have the time. In fact, I’m not sure where to even start!”

Many of us have compelling stories to share, or expert advice that would be valuable to offer to others. If only we could get that story out of our heads and into a published format. . . .
Think it’s too hard to write a book and get it published? Think you aren’t a good enough writer to get your message across? Think this all sounds too overwhelming?

Think again.

Award winning author and marketing expert Linda Popky has helped dozens of aspiring authors write, produce, and promote their nonfiction books. Topics range from coaching and leadership to innovation, selling businesses, becoming a better parent, impacting climate change and sustainability—and even launching a successful cannabis cultivation business.

Overview Session: Your Story’s Too Good Not to Share
We all have interesting tales to tell, but how do we capture the essence of these stories for others—especially for those of us who are not professional writers?

In this introductory session, Linda Popky will share tips and tools to help you identify the key elements of your story so that others can understand and appreciate the lessons you’d like to impart. This could take the form of an article or book, a video, or a visual presentation—that’s up to you. Whatever format you choose, you’ll be on your way to creating a unique work you can share with others.

Paths to Published Workshop:
This four-session workshop will help you understand how to get that book idea from your head into an attractive printed and/or electronic book.

Session 1: CHOOSING YOUR TOPIC: Starting Off on the Right Track

  • Is your book idea worth pursuing?
  • Choosing a story
  • Finding your voice
  • Knowing why you’re doing this
  • Identifying your audience
  • How does the book fit into your bigger picture

Session 2: CREATING YOUR MANUSCRIPT: Yikes! Now I Really Have to Write This!

  • You may not need to start from scratch
  • Tips for blasting away writer’s blocks
  • Outlining is the secret
  • A fun way to build your Table of Contents
  • If you can’t write, can you talk?
  • Publishing options—Understanding the many paths available to you

Session 3: PRODUCING YOUR BOOK: You Wrote the Book, Now What?

  • The manuscript may be done, but you’re not
  • Who are all these editors and why do I care?
  • The proof is in the pudding (or on the page)
  • Yes, we do judge books by their covers
  • How design and illustrations make or break books

Session 4: PROMOTING YOUR WORK: The Launch is Just the Beginning

  • If you build it, they may not come—unless you tell them why
  • Building an effective author platform
  • Social media: Is it worth it?
  • Influencers and multipliers
  • Building a community

This workshop is meant to be interactive. To get the most out of the program, it’s recommended that people attend all four sessions. At the end of the week, attendees will have formulated a book concept, developed an overview, identified their audience, developed a rough outline for what the book might look like, and have a good understanding of what’s required to make their book successful.

Linda Popky helps authors create and publish compelling content. After writing her own book, she was approached by other authors to edit their materials and to write for them. Since then, she’s done everything from ghostwriting books to producing printed, electronic, and audio books. She also coaches new authors through the book development process. Linda has recorded a classical piano CD called Night Songs. She resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with a quite personable Siberian Husky and a vintage Steinway grand piano.

Everyone Has a Story: Mindful Writing with the Five Senses With Caroline M. Grant

Everyone Has a Story
Caroline Grant was on track for a career as a college professor when her first child was born and abruptly changed her focus. Instead of writing literary analysis of novels and films, she began blogging (remember blogging?!) and writing personal essays to explore her new reality as a mother. In her evening presentation, Caroline will interweave personal stories with readings from her published work to demonstrate how, with mindful attention to small details, we can write our lives.

Workshop Descriptions
Everyone has a story, but what’s the best way to tell it? Do you start with your birth and tell a chronological story? How can you organize fifty, sixty, seventy or more (!) years of life and experience to tell a story that’s engaging, relatable, and readable? Using mindful writing techniques and focusing on our senses, we’ll identify key objects which illuminate moments in our lives. Each workshop will include a brief reading, guided meditation, free-writing time, and an optional opportunity to share your work. The sessions can be attended in sequence or individually.

Caroline Grant builds creative communities as a writer, editor, and teacher. She’s published essays in the New York Times, Washington Post, and other outlets, and has co-edited two anthologies, The Cassoulet Saved Our Marriage: True Tales of Food, Family, and How We Learn to Eat and Mama, PhD: Women Write About Motherhood and Academic Life. She was editor-in-chief of Literary Mama, and has taught writing at UC Berkeley, Stanford, and San Francisco Art Institute. Caroline is also co-founder, with her husband, of the Sustainable Arts Foundation, supporting writers and artists with children. They recently sunsetted SAF and returned its funds to indigenous communities.

If you only attend individual sessions, you will have an individual page each time which is a piece of watercolor paper with your wisdom. This will be fun and illuminating and no art experience needed whatsoever, this isn’t about painting pretty pictures. Join us to share in the spirit of wisdom keeping together.   Imagine leaving a week at the Ranch with your own Book of Wisdom!

The Red Thread
Have you ever heard of the red thread? It’s a symbol across many cultures throughout the world that represents interconnection. As part of our Wisdom Keepers’ Week, we will gather together and learn about the four legends of the red thread inspired by a cross-cultural history of red thread that goes back to ancient stardust. You will be given the opportunity to participate in a red thread ceremony that has been practiced around the world. The red thread helps us see the common thread throughout time, bond with one another and claim our own piece of the red thread.

Together we are  gifted lineage carrying wisdom keepers.  Teacher and artist Shiloh Sophia, who wrote The Way of the Red Thread will be with us to guide us in this experience.

Curate Shiloh Sophia is the Matriarchal Founder of MUSEA Center for Intentional Creativity. We are home to an inter-generational and multicultural collective of emerging and experienced creatives, healers, and leaders. Our lineage, beginning in the 1930s, is the framework for our Path of Practice in the intentional arts of every medium. Our vision is awakening consciousness through self-expression, so that we might become collaborative stewards with all of creation.   Shiloh Sophia describes this work as “an ancient futuristic spiritual path for the quickening times that offers healing, devoted practice, intentional community and purpose for our lives”. Her 30 year body of work has evolved into this path for seekers and finders with self-expression as the core form of devotion and the gateway to spiritual access through flow state. She is a teacher, artist, author and mystic, guiding tens of thousands of people in accessing their inner world to awaken embodied consciousness and identity through the ecstatic disciplines of the healing arts. She teaches classes and offers circles globally via livestream TV to viewers, on location at exotic destinations, and at the Mothership campus in Sonoma, California. The Intentional Creativity Foundation, 501 (c) 3, a museum and sanctuary, offers sacred space to our global membership.  We gather weekly and are always emerging into the most potent versions of ourselves as individuals, community members and in the greater collective.

You can find her most mornings have tea with her Muse among the redwood trees and grapevines, looking to solve the mysteries of the universe with a paintbrush and provocative conversation. She is a prolific painter with collectors all over the world. She was taught by her two mothers to live life as a great adventure, and indeed she has, and she calls each of us forward into the power of unreasonable love for one another and all of creation! May Love Be At The Center of All Choices!
