Immersion Swim Program – Swimming You Love with Steven Katz

Easy Freestyle
Introducing Total Immersion: How your swimming will be transformed in 5 simple lessons
In this introductory talk (meant to excite you about the progressive swim program this week) you will realize that your swimming, whether you are a beginner or a competitive triathlete, can easily become more efficient, more graceful, and more enjoyable. Together we will explore the unique method known as Total Immersion.  As a spoiler, let me just say, form takes precedence over force and the shape of your vessel (body alignment in the water) is far more important than the size of your motor. These principles apply to everyone seeking to enjoy freestyle and all its benefits.

Swim Immersion
Please sign up in Main Lounge for one of the two progressive 5-day classes with 8 people max per class.
Dive into a five-day PROGRESSIVE swim class that will have you swimming smarter, better, and faster. Designed for swimmers of all levels, Total Immersion, taught by swim coach and chiropractor, Dr. Steven Katz.  Coach Steve will begin by analyzing your stroke and then will apply small incremental corrections for skill improvement. Over the course of 5 days, you will discover an ease, confidence, and enjoyment in swimming that you never could have imagined. Spaces are limited so please be sure to register as early as possible.

Dr. Steve Katz has been a lifelong athlete (including professional baseball) and yoga/chiropractic practitioner. His passion for mindful swimming was ignited after experiencing a Total Immersion workshop in 2015. He experienced such immediate improvement in the ease, efficiency, and pleasure of swimming freestyle that he dedicated himself to certifying as a Total Immersion coach and achieved coach certification in 2021. He believes swimming is the perfect means to safe and mindful fitness at any age.

A Jazz Week with Sean Jones

Music and spirituality have always been intertwined in the artistic vision of trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator, and activist Sean Jones. Mr. Jones sang and performed as a child with the church choir in his hometown of Warren, Ohio, and switched from playing the drums to the trumpet at the age of 10.

Mr. Jones is a musical chameleon, comfortable in any musical setting no matter the role or genre. After a six-month stint with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis offered him a permanent position as lead trumpeter of the ensemble, a post he held from 2004 until 2010. In 2015, Mr. Jones was tapped to become a member of the SFJAZZ Collective. During this time, he has managed to keep a core group of talented musicians together under his leadership, forming the foundation for groups that have produced and released eight recordings on Mack Avenue Records. His most recent is the 2017 release Sean Jones: Live from Jazz at the Bistro.

Mr. Jones has been prominently featured in recordings and performances with many major figures in jazz, including Illinois Jacquet, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, Nancy Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Gerald Wilson, and Marcus Miller. He was selected by Mr. Miller, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter for their A Tribute to Miles tour in 2011. He has also performed with the Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Youngstown symphony orchestras, as well as Soulful Symphony in Baltimore and a chamber group at the Salt Bay Chamberfest.

Mr. Jones is an internationally recognized educator. He is president of the Jazz Education Network and holds the Richard and Elizabeth Case Chair in Jazz Studies at The John Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute in Baltimore. As well as artistic Director for the NYO JAZZ Program of Carnegie Hall. Previously, he served as chair of the Brass department at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Jazz Week with Billy Childs

Billy Childs has emerged as one of the foremost American composers of his era, successfully marrying the musical products of his heritage with the Western neoclassical traditions of the twentieth century in a powerful symbiosis of style, range, and dynamism.

Thus far, in his career, Childs has garnered seventeen Grammy nominations and six Grammy awards including two for Best Instrumental Jazz Album (Winds of Change in 2024 and Rebirth in 2018), and two for Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist (including New York Tendaberry from Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro, featuring Renee Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma). In 2006, Childs was awarded a Chamber Music America composer’s grant, and in 2009 was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship.  In 2013 he was awarded the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award.  He has also been awarded a composers award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2015).  In 2018, Childs was named “Outstanding Alumnus” of the Thornton School of Music (sharing that honor with, among others, Morton Lauridsen, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Marilyn Horne).  Childs has also served as president of Chamber Music America (2016-2022).

Born in Los Angeles, he entered USC as a composition major, graduating four years later with a bachelor of music in composition under the tutelage of Robert Linn. Since then Mr. Childs has received a number of orchestral and chamber commissions from, among others: Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Slatkin, the Los Angeles Master Chorale,  Monterey Jazz Festival, the Dorian Wind Quintet, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the American Brass Quintet, the Ying Quartet, the Lyris Quartet, Anne Akiko Meyers, Rachel Barton Pine, and Inna Faliks.

As a pianist Childs has performed with, among others, Freddie Hubbard, J.J. Johnson, Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, Renee Fleming, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony, Chick Corea, the Kronos Quartet, Wynton Marsalis, Jack DeJohnette, the Dorian Wind Quintet, Ying Quartet, the American Brass Quintet, and Dave Holland.

Childs’ solo jazz recording career includes four critically acclaimed albums on the Windham Hill Jazz label and two volumes of Chamber Jazz music (Lyric, Vol. 1, 2006 and Autumn: In Moving Pictures, Vol. 2, 2010). Childs expanded upon his talent for seamlessly straddling the lines between jazz and classical worlds with a collection of re-imagined Laura Nyro compositions for Sony Masterworks, released in September 2014.  Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro, was produced by Larry Klein and features as guest artists, among others: Renée Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, Wayne Shorter, Alison Kraus, Dianne Reeves, Chris Botti, Esperanza Spalding, and Lisa Fischer.  In 2017, Childs released the first of his three Mack Avenue recordings, the Grammy Award-winning Rebirth, which was followed by 2020’s Acceptance and 2023’s Grammy Award-winning The Winds of Change.

Childs is an in-demand clinician, whose recent invitations include working with students at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, masterclasses at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany, and an educational residency at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

Jazz Week with Ben Williams

When it comes to black music, Washington, D.C. produces its share of game-changers. That long list includes Duke Ellington, Chuck Brown, Marvin Gaye, Shirley Horn, Roberta Flack, Bad Brains, Meshell Ndegeocello, Wale, and Oddisee. You can add Ben Williams to that venerated roster.

For more than a decade, Williams has steadily become one of the most acclaimed and versatile bassists in modern jazz. In 2009, he won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. He has performed/recorded with such giants as Pat Metheny, George Benson, Stefon Harris, David Sanborn, Lauryn Hill, Wynton Marsalis, Robert Glasper, Maxwell, and Nicholas Payton. In 2013 and 2015 Williams received the DownBeat Magazine Critics Poll Rising Star Award for Bass. Williams became a “Rising Star” when he won the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition Award that landed him his first record-deal with Concord Records. Thereafter, he recorded and released State of Art in 2011 with his band, Sound Effect. The Album received an impressive 4.5 Star Review in DownBeat Magazine and reached #1 on the charts of iTunes and the National BillBoard. He was named the 2011 iTtunes Breakthrough Artist of the Year in the category of jazz.

As a leader, Williams revealed his talents as a keen composer and bandleader on his first two Concord Records albums – State of Art (2011) and Coming of Age (2015). As gripping as those albums are, they don’t prepare you for Williams’ newest album, I AM A MAN, released Rainbow Blonde, a new imprint co-owned by singer, songwriter, and kindred spirit, José James. Sonically, the new album departs grandly from the mostly acoustic instrumental settings of his previous albums. Williams imbued his love for modern R&B and hip-hop and his socio-political awareness subtly on State of Art and Coming of Age. But on I AM A MAN, he brings them to the fore with mesmerizing vocal-centric songs that will surely raise his profile higher in modern soul and rap circles.

With the help from sound engineer Brian Bender, I AM A MAN boasts a humid and hazy sound that recalls Soulaquarian albums released by The Roots, Erykah Badu, Bilal, D’Angelo, Common, and Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor. “I wanted to make this not just a musical statement, but sonically, I wanted to dig into a different sound. We had the opportunity to work in the studio to craft some sounds. What you hear is Brian’s brilliance with engineering. I wanted this record to deal with the past, present, and future,” Williams says.

The Leader Within You with Laura Liswood

Women World Leaders – Lessons of Leadership Stories of Women Presidents and Prime Ministers
Laura Liswood presents her 30-minute PBS documentary which she wrote, created and produced.  Interviews include women leaders such as Margaret Thatcher, Benazir Bhutto, Mary Robinson, and Corazon Aquino.  A discussion of her journey to meet the 15 women presidents and prime ministers and what she learned from them will follow after the showing of the film.

Lessons and Myths of Leadership
What are the myths of leadership that some women (and men) believe, and how do these myths pose challenges for women in their leadership roles? What are the best practices of excellent leaders, and what additional lessons can we learn from women who have led their country? Offering a unique perspective on enhancing opportunities to successfully lead an organization and shape a career, Laura Liswood, former Senior Advisor to Goldman Sachs and Secretary General of the Council of Women World Leaders, shares insights based on her work which became a book and video documentary entitled Women World Leaders-15 Great Leaders Tell Their Story (Harper/Pandora)

Finding the Leader within You
The session looks at great leaders and how to see yourself in them and their actions and traits. We all potentially have traits of leadership-courage, energy, emotional intelligence, communication styles, ability to listen, be curious, create trust and hope in others. This session allows the participants to look at their own life experiences and find the leadership behaviors in themselves. Women and men display their ambitions differently. Public recognition for performance is more likely to go to men, and women don’t get, or they give away, that recognition to their detriment. We will discuss how each of them deals with ambition and the challenges they face. Men and women are rated equally successfully when measured as effective leaders but women don’t make it to the top in equal numbers. What is happening? The pipeline is full but the number of men leaders still far exceeds the number of women. How can women claim their authority to lead and feel entitled to lead?

Cultivating a Growth Mindset in Your Life and Work
The growth mindset helps us live our lives fully with a belief that talents, abilities, and intelligence can be developed through hard work, willingness to learn and to expand ourselves through challenge, feedback and failure. It is the concept of “Not Yet” rather than “Not Ever”. We learn from our productive mistakes, and being open to continuous exploration and discovery. This is opposed to a fix mindset with the belief that intelligence is static and unchanging. In personal relationships the growth mindset overturns myths about how to have a successful personal life. This mindset believes that many problems can be solved through communication, curiosity and openness.  The growth mindset embraces diversity and differences and the value it brings to our lives.

Laura Liswood, JD/MBA is a passionate advocate for leadership, diversity and inclusion and is a sought-after speaker, author, and global thought leader on these topics.  She particularly enjoys highly interactive sessions with her audiences and uses humor and research to convey her message. She created a PBS documentary and book on her interviews with women presidents and prime ministers and was appointed Managing Director for Global Leadership and Diversity at Goldman Sachs.  After 9/11 Laura decided to become a first responder, and became a police officer in the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department, retiring as a sergeant. She is the author of four books, including The Loudest Duck: Moving Beyond Diversity, and The Elephant and the Mouse: Moving Beyond the Illusion of Inclusion

Come sing songs of freedom and spirit with Bethany Yarrow, who will teach traditional invocations that call on the forces of nature: the water, mountains, forests, wind and fire. Open your voice, move your body, and free your spirit in a joyful circle of song that honors our own life force and dancing energies as we celebrate the spring equinox and the healing balance it brings.

Bethany Yarrow carries a legacy of folk music passed down through her family. For over two decades, she has been on a journey exploring the roots of American spiritual music, performing with musicians from all over the world, including Haiti, Niger, and Brazil. Over the last five years, Bethany has translated more than 150 traditional songs for the Orixás, the great pantheon of Afro-Brazilian deities expressed in the forces of nature who are at the center of her own devotional practice.

Happy Hour for Hormones with Nancy Cetel

Hormones Through the Ages
This comfortable, warm and welcoming discussion will involve the women’s health journey through the ages and the relationship of our hormonal balance to mood, energy levels, mental health, sexual health and more. We will share our concerns and interests in this open forum on a variety of hormonal issues for all ages. The topics can range from egg freezing in our thirties, to reigniting libido in our peri-menopause/menopause years and beyond.

Our Hormones and our Overall Health and Wellness
We will share and explore how lifestyle, nutrition, stress, self-awareness, friendships and more impact our health and hormonal well-being. For example, are we aware of what we eat or drink on a daily basis and how that contributes to our personal state of health? What role do hormones play for our heart health and brain health? Why is sleep so critical?  What role does alcohol play in our overall physical and mental status and how is that a factor in breast health? Are there supplements that are important for different hormonal stages of life? More topics of interest will be addressed and discussed.
