Clinical Fitness Assessment

Cardiorespiratory Fitness (CRF) sheds light on how well you can perform in a variety of physical activities and how well you are able to burn the calories you consume. CRF is related to weight management, functional capacity, human performance, and metabolic efficiency, and is the strongest predictor of all-cause and disease-specific mortality.

The RLP Clinical Fitness Assessment, with Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist, Jody Miller, includes two 30-minute sessions during your week at the Ranch, and one 30 minute session virtually as a follow up to your Ranch visit.

During session one, Body Composition and Aerobic Capacity are assessed.

Body Composition is assessed using the skinfold caliper method with measures taken at several sites on the body (thigh, triceps, subscapular, supra-iliac and abdomen).

Aerobic Capacity (METS) is assessed using a sub-maximal cycling protocol. Guests ride a Schwinn AirDyne to a predetermined target heart rate. Heart rate and blood pressure are monitored.

During session two, a summary of your results and personalized nutrition and exercise recommendations will be provided.

During session three, coaching and support follow up is offered.

QiGong

QiGong 9 Phases

Taly Rutenberg, Lcsw, is a psychotherapist and long time practitioner and teacher of Qigong, an ancient self healing practice she is honored to share with guests at the Ranch. She is a certified Qigong teacher, having studied with renowned masters from California, New Zealand and the sacred mountains of China, where Qigong was born. Over the course of the week, she will introduce participants to this joyful and effective practice through a form of Qigong known as the “The Nine Phases.” Leading you through a series of gentle, but powerful exercises, she will help you tap into the power of Qi, unlocking the body’s capacity for self healing and rejuvenation. Along with teaching the form, she will present the philosophy and science behind Qi and Qigong, including some of the trove of western medical evidence now validating what has long been understood in the East about the gift of Qigong.

Taly lives in Berkeley, California, with her husband, storyteller Joel ben Izzy, a long-time presenter at the Ranch. When not seeing patients and teaching Qigong, she enjoys hiking in the hills, reading, cooking, sewing, and spending time with family and friends.

“Un-Mute” Your Heart, Your Soul: Your Voice

Many of us were discouraged from telling our stories along the way. Whether it was being dissuaded from taking on that fine arts degree in college, or being told not to “ruin” the music on the radio by singing along at the top of our lungs when we were “tweens.”  For the voice inside of you that was quieted against its will, we set the stage for you to “Un-Mute” Your Heart, Your Soul: Your Voice.

We’ve come up with five ways to make your “un-mute” a blissful and peace-steeped experience:

  1. Prepare physically and mentally with daily Breathing and Relaxing Exercises.
  2. Overcome the pressure of yesterday’s results and tomorrow’s expectations with The Art of Warming Up: Being Here, Now, vocally.
  3. Find the words and sounds that best enable you to tell your story with Repertoire Selection*.
  4. Craft your story, in sound, with Vocal Style**.
  5. Tell your story with an End of the Week Vocal Performance!***

*If it sounds fancy, don’t worry: it isn’t! Repertoire Selection is about picking that song that notoriously sets you free … and yes, we mean strongly considering your favorite karaoke, shower, and/or highway cruising jam as a study piece.  We offer to brainstorm ideas with you one-on-one, to learn your selection with you, and to help you to better understand and express yourself through that selection.

**Some folks are soft-spoken but wish they were more outgoing; others long to be more intimate, sensitive, dynamic.   Any virtue you’d want to assume in your life, we can help you assume vocally with the full belief that if you can conquer it in your voice, you can conquer it in your life.

Un-Muted! Our Hearts…Our Souls…Our Voices…in Concert!
Thursday PM
*** Don’t worry!! The performance is not by any means “mandatory,” rather, it’s a special treat and a supportive stage to be able to share your personal findings with your fellow seekers should you choose to do so.

The Truth About Exercise

Sedentary Lifestyle is the New Smoking
Our bodies were made to move. Regular motion is the key to healthy circulation, optimizing cardiac risk factors, maintaining muscle mass, functional capacity, and joint flexibility – not to mention prevention of early dementia and some forms of cancer!  After age 35, most people every year lose significant lean mass and strength and gain fat mass, leading to a myriad of self-inflicted health issues. Dr. Rice will explore the latest clinical insights regarding the benefits of an active lifestyle and will explain the necessary ingredients for minimizing associated health risks.

With more than thirty years as a family practice and sports medicine physician, Dr. Lee Rice has become one of the premier medical experts on wellness in the United States and abroad. He has been head team physician for professional and Olympic teams including the San Diego Chargers, Los Angeles Clippers, San Diego Gulls, San Diego Soccers, USA Olympic Volleyball and America’s Cup Sailing syndicates including Oracle Racing. Drawing on these experiences, Dr. Rice founded Lifewellness Institute, a revolutionary healthcare facility focusing on health promotion and individualized wellness programs for families and corporations.  Dr. Rice is a clinical professor at Western University of Health Sciences and a Voluntary Clinical Instructor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of California, San Diego.
