Classical Smackdown: Time Travelers

Johann Sebastian Bach vs. Philip Glass
Round 1
Bach (1685 – 1750) Prelude in Ab Major, Well-tempered Clavier Book II
Glass (b. 1937) Etude #5

Round 2
Glass Metamorphosis One
Bach Partita #2, in C Minor, BWV 826: Sinfonia
Glass Metamorphosis Four
Bach Partita #2: Capriccio

Round 3
Bach Erbarme dich from The St Matthew Passion (transcription Chiu)
Glass Mad Rush

Notes on the Program written by the Artist
Tonight, vying for your attention, and your vote, are two towering and controversial figures: Johann Sebastian Bach and Philip Glass. In many ways, these two would seem to occupy radically opposite stylistic territories.

Bach was born 329 years ago – Glass just celebrated his 75th birthday. In his time, Bach was considered a throwback to an old-fashioned, irrelevant tradition – Glass pioneered a “minimalist” style that would be embraced by popular culture. Bach’s music is very often a complex intertwining of multiple voices, rarely repeating themselves as they interact to create a rich harmonic world. A Philip Glass score often contains only a few distinct musical cells that are repeated seemingly endlessly.

The funny thing is that, as these two styles move away from each other in one sense, they approach each other on the back side. There is a sense of spirituality, a hypnotic quality of ecstasy that arises from both composers’ music. Bach’s music does this through an overload of information – themes that appear in multiple voices, in reverse, in mirror image – that encourages both hyper-focus and letting go. Glass’ music does this through repetition – a limited number of simple patterns that repeat to the point where one begins to notice the intricate details and interactions within those simple patterns.

Both composers enhance consciousness and appreciation of the beauty inherent in their music.

Round 1
Disguised as ‘study pieces’ for Bach’s wife and children initially, the WTC broke traditional ground by revealing that the 18th century tonal system could be expanded with unforeseen qualities. Each piece in the WTC pushed newer limits on the piano as a keyboard instrument of expression. It is the duty for the pianist to unmask these qualities.

The Etude by Glass is also outside the narrow confines of the Etude from the Romantic era, technically challenging and dazzling. This Etude focuses on the particular traits of Glass’ “repetitive structures”, proving to be an exercise in structure, clarity and rhythm.

Round 2
Bach’s Keyboard Partitas (six of them) are the culmination of Bach’s exploration of the genre of the “Suite”, coming after his French Suites and German Suites. The second Partita in particular displays an amazing stylistic virtuosity, from deep declamation to impish dance, from lyrical beauty to multi-voice complexity and detail.

Glass’ series of Metamorphosis (five pieces) come from music for theatre and cinema. The title is taken from Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, from which the music is drawn. Glass also adapted the music for the soundtrack of Errol Morris’ film The Thin Blue Line. Not only are the works in Glass’ signature “repetitive structures”, but each piece is a slightly altered repetition of its neighboring pieces.

Round 3
Bach’s Passion According to St Matthew is one of the masterpieces of classical sacred music. Scored originally for 2 choirs, 2 orchestras and soloists, it was modified and performed several times by Bach in his duty as Kapellmeister, but then disappeared for almost a century. It was Felix Mendelssohn who staged the first full performance of the work, an event often cited as the beginning of the revival of Bach’s music, a movement that has continued on till today.

One of the most recognized and performed segments of this Cantata is the “Erbarme dich” aria for alto and violin. Despite it’s lulling string of repeated notes in the bass, the message of the aria is hardly one of comfort – “Erbarme dich” relates the despair resulting from the Apostle Peter’s betrayal of his Messiah. Bach’s eerily contained and focused approach to the expression only heightens the sense of despair – a musical enactment of the cold betrayal.

Glass and Bach shared at least one major trait – a capacity for adapting their existing music for new projects. The music of Mad Rush originated in a set of pieces featuring the organ. Soon after, Glass himself arranged the last piece of this set for piano, gave it the title and performed it on the occasion of the first public visit of the Dalai Lama to New York in 1981. The title is an apt description of the sudden changes between the meditative and the frantic, a particularly modern state of mind that Glass captures in music.

Secrets of Give and Take

Imagine what your life would be like if everyone you interact with – at work and at home – would value and reward you for your talents in the way you truly deserve.

In “Secrets of Give and Take,” we will explore how to bring your gifts to the world in a way that they are embraced and rewarded. Skills for win-win outcomes that work in business can just as effectively be applied to life and home situations. If you have ever sought to buy a home, wanted your children to do their homework, experienced a conflict with a neighbor, or aimed to sell your artwork – then some of the tips we cover are bound to be helpful.

How I Learned the Hard Way (So You Don’t Have To)

Join me in hearing about the many mistakes I made over time as I tried to meet my needs in business and in life. Have a good laugh when you hear how I was negotiating against myself, mistaking my wants for needs, and letting my emotions get the better of me. And discover the four steps that build strong mutual trust over time to support successful, mutually beneficial relationships.

Mindsets for Getting What You Deserve

In this session, we will dispel some myths about what it takes to “win” in life, and what “winning” really is. We’ll address the paradoxes of mindset. Such as: how the one thing that makes you most persuasive is allowing yourself to be persuaded. How self-doubt is just another form of self-orientation, and how it can be overcome. Why objections are not rejections but requests for help. You’ll gain insight into the mindset of winners, and you’ll learn to turn your own mindset around.

Personal Brand

Today, we’ll discuss how to make your “authentic self” shine brightly, so people want to engage with you. We review another paradox: how putting the brakes on expressing certain emotions can make you more authentic, not less. We will discuss how your values can inform your message, and how you can help others around you see the benefit of what you have to offer. We also touch on the differences between how men and women often present themselves, and what they can learn from each other.

Skills for Getting What You Deserve

Let’s get very practical now and learn the simple skills that will help you offer your gifts and talents to the world and get what you deserve. Once you master asking three important questions, you’ll be on your way to a mutual, “win-win” relationship. We will also review the difference between persistence and stalking, and between promotion, exaggeration, bluff, and lies; and we’ll delve into the core skill of “treating everyone in life as if they were your customer”.

Techniques that May Be Used Against You, and How to Overcome Them

This is a dangerous session, as you will become familiar with commonly used, effective but less ethical negotiation tactics and techniques. Dangerous, because we don’t want to use these techniques to manipulate others! We want to be prepared, though, for the pressure that may be used against us, and I will provide you with techniques to turn these negative tactics around into more productive conversations.

How to Harness the Power of Fun to Feel More Alive

Join Catherine Price, author of The Power of Fun: How to Feel Alive Again, for a two-part “Funtervention” workshop—inspired by her viral TED talk—devoted to helping adults and families understand the value of fun and have more of it, both during family week and in their everyday lives. The two workshops can be taken independently, though they’re designed to complement each other.

The Power of Fun: What is Fun, and Why is It Good For Us?
We use the word “fun” in our everyday speech, but what is fun—and why is it important? In this workshop, inspired by her viral TED talk, Catherine will reveal some common misconceptions about fun (spoiler alert: it’s not frivolous or irresponsible!). She’ll propose a new definition that she believes captures its true power and importance, and will explain some of the surprising ways in which fun is essential for our happiness and health. She’ll invite participants to reflect on their greatest personal sources of fun, and will provide concrete suggestions for how to have more fun during Family week, both individually and as a family. While younger children are welcome, this workshop is designed for participants 13 and older.

The Funtervention: How to Have More Fun as a Family
In this workshop, Catherine will lead families through a hands-on “funtervention” — a series of conversation prompts and brainstorming exercises designed to help them identify their “fun magnets” and “fun factors”— both individually and as families—so that they can have more fun.  She’ll also reveal common “fun blockers,” and offer families the chance to take her “fun compatibility” quiz to see where their tastes in fun do (and perhaps don’t!) align. Participants will leave with a new concept of fun and easy, practical ideas for how they can build more fun into their family lives, both at the Ranch and at home. While younger children are welcome, this workshop is designed for participants 13 and older. It builds upon some of the concepts from Catherine’s first workshop on fun, though it can also be taken on its own.

Catherine Price is a health and science journalist, speaker, and the author of books, including How to Break Up With Your Phone and The Power of Fun. Her work on fun and screen/life balance has been featured in media outlets around the world, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, the BBC, CNN, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, and The Today Show, among many others, and she has led talks and workshops for events including TED, SXSW, the Aspen Ideas Festival, Leadercast, and Oprah Winfrey’s “The Life You Want” series.

Catherine writes the Substack newsletter, “How to Feel Alive,” and her TED talk on fun has been viewed more than 5 million times. Her recent talk, ”Kids, Smartphones, and Social Media: The Risks and the Solutions,” has been described by Jonathan Haidt (the bestselling author of The Anxious Generation) as “the talk every parent should watch,” and has led to a collaboration between Catherine and Jon’s team, in which they’re working together to roll back the phone-based childhood.

Through her writing, talks, and courses, Catherine aims to provide evidence-backed resources to help people of all ages scroll less and live more.

Screen/Life Balance and How to Break Up With Your Phone

Join Catherine Price, TED speaker, and author of How to Break Up With Your Phone, for two workshops dedicated to helping families create healthier relationships with technology — both during family week and back at home. The first workshop is geared toward helping people create better screen/life balance for themselves; the second is oriented more toward families. The two workshops can be taken independently, though they’re also designed to complement each other.

How to Break Up With Your Phone*
In this workshop, Catherine Price, TED speaker, and author of How to Break Up With Your Phone will reveal the ways in which our phones and apps are designed to be hard to put down and the effects that constant connectivity is having on our relationships, memories, attention spans, creativity and productivity. Catherine will help you identify your personal goals, lay the foundations for new habits, and make changes to your settings and routines that will help you establish better boundaries with technology and create a relationship with your phone that feels good. She’ll also provide some practical tips for how to spend your week at the Ranch bonding with your family, not your phone. This workshop is appropriate for adults and teens (13 and up). It’s geared primarily toward helping people improve their *own* relationships with their phones and devices. *Don’t worry: no phones will be harmed during this workshop!

How to Create Screen/Life Balance as a Family
Is screen time a source of conflict in your family? Do you want to create healthier habits but don’t know how? In this workshop, which is designed for families to do together, Catherine Price, TED speaker, author of How to Break Up With Your Phone, and core member of Jon Haidt’s The Anxious Generation team, will lead families through conversations and exercises designed to help them achieve better screen/life balance as a family. Catherine will reveal the ways in which our phones and apps are designed to be hard to put down and invite families to explore some of the effects that technology and devices are having on their relationships (and attention spans, creativity, memories, and productivity). This workshop will include guided conversations, discussions, practical suggestions, and hands-on activities, all designed to help families use Family Week to lay the foundations for new habits that they can take home with them. Be sure to bring your phones! This workshop is designed for adults and children ages 10 and up (regardless of whether they have phones), though younger children are also welcome. It’s geared toward helping people create healthier relationships with technology as a *family.*

Improv(e) Your Life

Intro to Improv…The Power of Agreement
The joy of improvisational comedy lies in its spontaneous creativity and seemingly effortless collaboration. The secret to both aspects is simple:  listen and agree. In this workshop we’ll learn the power of saying “Yes, and…” and “Yes, because….” We’ll sharpen listening skills (useful in all areas of life!) and, before you know it, we’ll be improvising hilarious scenes.

Follow the Fun
Improv can take you anywhere and let you do anything. You can set an improv scene anywhere in the universe and give yourself and your scene partners any traits or powers. BUT you have to clue the audience in, so they can follow the fun. This workshop will focus on quickly conveying the “who, what, where” of a scene, so you can move on to exploring your unique world. We’ll also tackle “character work” and “object work” – i.e., working with imaginary props.

Group Games, Group Mind
There are no wallflowers in improv. Everyone can get in on the fun. Not in a scene? We’ll learn how to tag in and out and provide back line support (like sound effects). We’ll also learn group games where everyone participates in scenes. If your real life includes working with any kind of teams, you will see how improv principles apply.

We’ve Got Your Back!
We’ll review all the techniques we’ve learned and put them together in what is known as a “montage” set. And for those who want to perform Thursday night, we’ll use this workshop as show practice. (You don’t have to be in the show but, hey, what better place to try something new?)

Thursday Night Live!
Move over Kenan Thompson and Kate McKinnon. We are going to give this our best shot! Come one, come all as the RLP Improv Troupe creates a unique and original show based solely on audience suggestions. We’ll also talk about applying the principles of improv to your everyday world…because life today requires lots of improvising!
