Healthy Pleasures

Healthy Pleasures: Why Everything that Feels Good is Not Bad
Many people think that to promote health they must undertake strict weight-loss diets, adopt punishing exercise programs, avoid salt, shun cholesterol, and follow all sorts of arduous, pleasure-denying regimens.  Fortunately, scientific evidence now suggests that for most people doing what is pleasurable, from sensual delights to selfless pleasures, from optimism to laughter, pays off twice: immediate enjoyment and better health. So taking a siesta, playing with a pet, talking to a friend, looking at nature, smelling a sweet scent, laughing at a funny movie, going shopping, having sex, soaking up the heat of a sauna, taking a vacation, passionately pursuing a hobby, sipping a glass of wine, indulging in chocolate (yes, chocolate!), listening to your favorite music, helping someone in need, thinking optimistically, practicing gratitude, and scores of other healthy pleasures may measurably improve your health.

Behavior Change Made Simpler: Health Benefits of Success and Confidence
Strong evidence suggests that celebrating successful behavior change (no matter how small!) increases confidence, and confidence itself improves health and well-being. So while increasing exercise, eating more healthfully, and managing weight are important, most of us experience repeated failure in maintaining long-term behavior change.  What does repeated failure do to our sense of confidence and control? Happily, there are practical ways to improve confidence, success, and health through small changes without sacrificing enjoyment. You don’t have to kill yourself to save your life!

Stress: Avoid, Cope or Embrace?
Do you often feel that stress depletes your health, vitality, and health? Do you believe that stress is negative and should be avoided? Or do you view stress as positive- something that enhances your health, growth, and performance? It turns out that our beliefs about stress (our “mindsets”) may be more powerful in shaping our health, than stress itself. Rather than just managing stress, learn how to shift mindset to embrace and utilize stress as something helpful.

Rx Healthy Sex: Is Sex Good Medicine?
Sexuality is central to human well-being, but most of medicine is focused on sexual dysfunction and health risks of sexual activity. But can enjoying the pleasures of sex have benefits for health and well-being? Is good sex good for you? We will explore the scientific evidence that sexual activity can increase longevity, lower heart disease risk, reduce prostate cancer, reduced vaginal atrophy, burn calories, improve marital satisfaction, support successful aging, reduce stress and even stop headaches. We will also consider if sex be prescribed and how can sexual satisfaction be enhanced.

Music is Medicine for the Body, Heart and Soul

Music is Medicine for the Body, Heart and Soul
Music is an incredibly powerful phenomenon that touches us in profound ways. For more and more people, music transcends being simply a form of entertainment to become much more: a resource for healing and a connection to the things that matter most during the critical passages in our lives. This way of harnessing the “universal language of emotion” can enhance and uplift our lives (and environments) in meaningful and healing ways. It can awaken joy, reduce stress, and create more humane ecosystems of compassion and empathy. These multi-sensory experiences can rebalance our hearts and minds, nourish our souls, and strengthen the capacity to be of service to others. When these music and sound experiences are created in the name of the love of life, you can harness these vibrationally intelligent modalities to co-create a world of unity where everyone wins.

The SoulSong Process™
Birthing Your Emergent Self Through the Power of Music
As we assess the changes that have been thrust upon us during these extraordinary times, many of us are feeling called to co-create a more generative way of living, leading, working, and engaging that reflects a deeper understanding of what really matters most. For most of us the old ways of operating demonstrated a fundamental imbalance between our minds and our hearts – with too much “doing” and not enough “being.” An overwhelming “busy-ness” gradually pulled us away from our essential selves. It became easy to lose sight of what was needed to live lives with deeper meaning, purpose, integrity, and compassion. Music, the universal language of human emotion, is a key to rediscovering and restoring your essence and to connecting with universal forces. The SoulSong Process harnesses music in a specific way. It blends the transformative power of intention to reconnect you with your own heart-centered wisdom. That wisdom can illuminate your way to your unique “new normal.” Join composer Gary Malkin in a transformative, unforgettable experience!

Gary Malkin is a multiple Emmy award-winning composer, public speaker & arts and health expert who inspires the world to embrace music as a catalyst for greater emotional intelligence, heart-centered mindfulness and cross-cultural community building through his life-enhancing company, WisdomoftheWorld.com.  His score for Thrive, the most-watched documentary in history, received a Hollywood Music in Media award in 2013. His globally acclaimed palliative resource, Graceful Passages, co-created with award-winning filmmaker Michael Stillwater, is considered the most celebrated work of its kind, having supported over a million people worldwide to find acceptance for the end of life process.  Gary has presented at UCSF Medical Center, Stanford Health, Houston Methodist, Google, Harvard’s Conference on Spirituality and Health, Scripps Clinic, among many others. After over 30 years of creating music for mainstream film and television, his work redefines music’s capacity to awaken compassion and wellness into the fabric of our lives with more gratitude and Grace.

Adriana Reid was born and raised in Mexico City and has resided in San Diego, Ca. since 2008. She has an MBA in Education, specializing in Family Counseling and Human Software Engineering.

After years of bouncing around in a survival mode to provide emotionally and financially for her 3 sons as a single mother, she is now privileged to be focused on her heart’s passion as the founder of Be2Be-Coaching, Inc. dedicated to helping humans live their lives in a fulfilling and easier way.

In her background there are many hours dedicated to families, helping children and adults overcome difficult situations and moments of crisis, by teaching them emotional self-sufficiency practices and techniques that she has gathered along the way on her healing journey. Among her favorites are, the pioneering field of Human Software Engineering which helps her understand and resolve blockages at the pre-verbal stages of our human conditioning at the level they were created and installed in our belief system; as she eloquently says: “Human conditioning determines and block the skills and abilities people have to resolve their inner conflicts and excel in life”.

Be2Be-Coaching principles -decode, recode, and reprogram, are directed to help clients find blockages, provide effective resolution to problems and/or challenges, regardless of the circumstances, and allow them to gain their power back to co-create and manifest their heartfelt desires.

Nurturing Your Emotional Health

A Mindful Approach to Stress
During this time of unprecedented change and uncertainty, we have come to accept that stress is a part of daily life, yet many people struggle to understand that stress can be both a positive and motivating force as well as a detriment to physical health and emotional wellbeing. This presentation offers a mindful approach to navigating change and challenges — participants will learn about signs of stress related to four dimensions of personal energy: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Research in the field of positive psychology will be highlighted and participants will be introduced to several natural antidotes to stress as well as pathways to cultivating joy and meaning.

Natural Pathways to Well-Being
The pursuit of happiness is a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence; however, it is left to individuals to determine the meaning of happiness.  Researchers have provided varying definitions of what it means to be happy, but many people struggle to feel a sustained sense of overall well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic added a new appreciation for the importance of engaging in self-care – feelings of anxiety, depression, isolation, and loss became more common than ever. This presentation will focus on providing strategies to not only cultivate meaning and purpose, but to mindfully navigate change and improve your physical health and emotional wellbeing. Evidenced based benefits of expressing gratitude, engaging in acts of kindness, and the importance of connection will be illuminated. Participants will learn ways to develop a growth mindset – leaving the session with a sense of empowerment to approach the challenges of life with emotional fortitude.

Boosting Resilience
Resilience is the ability to successfully bounce back from adversity or misfortune – the past few years have certainly been a time to tap into one’s capacity to persevere. How successful have you been in navigating the stress and uncertainty of the pandemic, the social and political unrest, personal losses…? Concert: Music, Magic and Mayhem

Marshall Chapman is a multi-hyphenated American treasure. The singer-songwriter-author-actress was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on January 7, 1949. To date, she has released fourteen critically acclaimed albums. Her 2013 release, Blaze of Glory, was hailed a masterpiece. (Click here for NPR interview.) And the Associated Press proclaimed her most recent Songs I Can’t Live Without (2020) “perhaps her best.”

Chapman’s songs have been recorded by everyone from Emmylou Harris and Joe Cocker to Irma Thomas and Jimmy Buffett. (Click here for complete list.)

In 2010, Chapman landed her first movie role, playing Gwyneth Paltrow’s road manager in Country Strong. During filming, her musical Good Ol’ Girls (adapted from the fiction of Lee Smith and Jill McCorkle, featuring songs by Matraca Berg and Marshall) opened off-Broadway. That fall, Chapman simultaneously released a book (They Came to Nashville) and CD (Big Lonesome). They Came to Nashville was nominated for the 2011 SIBA Book Award for nonfiction, and the Philadelphia Inquirer named Big Lonesome “Best Country/Roots Album of 2010.”

Of her three rockin’ albums for Epic, the Al Kooper-produced Jaded Virgin was voted Record of the Year (1978) by Stereo Review. Her album, It’s About Time… (Island, 1995), recorded live at the Tennessee State Prison for Women, drew rave reviews from Time, USA Today and the Village Voice.

Chapman’s first book, Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller (St. Martin’s Press) was a SIBA bestseller, 2004 SIBA Book Award finalist, and one of three finalists for the Southern Book Critics Circle Award.

Chapman continues to land film roles. In Mississippi Grind (2015) she plays the blues-singing mother of a drifter-gambler played by Ryan Reynolds. In Lovesong, which garnered glowing reviews at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, she plays the mother of the groom (Ryan Eggold) opposite Rosanna Arquette’s mother of the bride. In Novitiate, which opened to rave reviews at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, she plays a nun who loses her mind.

Marshall is a contributing editor to Garden & Gun. She’s also written for The Oxford AmericanNashville Arts MagazineSouthern LivingWPerforming Songwriter, and The Bob Edwards Show (Sirius/XM). “But music,” she says, “is my first and last love.”

Marshall is currently featured in “Outlaws & Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ’70s” at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Nashville. The exhibit runs until Feb. 14, 2022.
