Journeying with the Mandala with Joy Khoo

Journeying with the Mandala.
Embark on a journey into the magic and symbolism of mandalas—sacred circles found in cultures and traditions around the world. Discover the beauty and power of the mandala, hear inspiring real-life stories connected to these timeless symbols, and learn how they can serve as tools for reflection, creativity, and personal growth.

Mandala Journey Part 1 – Designing Your Circle
Explore the art and mindfulness of creating your own mandala. This workshop invites you to tap into your creativity while cultivating stillness and presence. Along the way, participants will engage in guided journaling to deepen their connection to the process and the mandala they create. No prior artistic experience is needed—just an open heart and a willingness to explore.

Mandala Journey Part 2 –  Connecting
Take the next step in your mandala journey by connecting with the sacred circle you designed in Workshop 1. Using the process of SoulCollage®, you’ll access deeper layers of meaning and insight through a creative and intuitive process.  This workshop includes opportunities for individual reflection and paired discussions, encouraging a deeper connection with yourself.   Additionally, we will co-create mandalas as a group, fostering a sense of shared understanding and building meaningful connections with one another in community.

Mandala Journey Part 3 – Deepening
We’ll meditate with the mandala to uncover its wisdom and messages for your life. Through guided practices, individual reflections, and small breakout groups, you’ll gain further clarity and insight into your journey with the mandala. This final session is designed to help you integrate the discoveries into your personal and spiritual growth.

Art Workshops with Jessica Colvin

  • Embossing Your Own Set of Stationery
  • Decoupaging Coasters, Frames and Journals

Jessica Colvin, MSW, MPH is a national leader in the school wellness movement, with over 25 years of experience supporting the health and well-being of youth. As the founder of SWELL – Schools Well, she has helped design and launch more than 90 school-based Wellness Centers across California and beyond, creating spaces grounded in student voice, wellness, and belonging.  Within this work, Jessica has developed the Wellness Toolbox – a framework that invites youth and adults alike to recognize and name their emotions (“name it to tame it”) and build personalized tools for coping, emotional regulation, and self-care. Some of these tools include mindfulness, movement, and connection – and for Jessica, one of her most meaningful wellness tools has always been art.  When she’s not working with schools, Jessica can often be found teaching arts & crafts workshops – a passion she’s pursued for over 30 years, blending creativity, mindfulness, expression, and play. She believes art isn’t just a hobby, but a meaningful way to support emotional well-being and reconnect with joy – regardless of experience level.

Join Jessica at The Ranch to explore and expand your own Wellness Toolbox through hands-on artmaking, where creativity, reflection, and connection are all part of the process.

Marbled & Collaged Art with Brent Hedstrom

Where creativity and color flows.  Step into the peaceful calm of the art studio and check in with your creative self.  When we’re surrounded by quiet, ideas move through us more freely-color seems brighter, and even the simplest materials begin to spark new possibilities. In this hands on workshop, you’’ll explore the magical, meditative process of paper marbling- a playful technique that transforms ink and color into swirling, one-of-a-kind patterns.  The method is unexpected, the results are always surprising, and the experience itself is calming.

Once your marbled papers are complete, we’ll move into torn paper collage, where you’ll layer, rip, and reassemble your designs into expressive notecards and personal works of art.  It’s a beautiful way to let go of perfection and allow your hands and intuition to lead.

What you’ll leave with:

A set of handmade notecards using your marbled papers and a fresh connection to your creative rhythm rooted in stillness and play.

Both the process and results will surprise you.

Brent Hedstrom
From the bright lights of Broadway to the vibrant chaos of the art studio , Brent’s journey is nothing short of eclectic.  His resume spans theatrical stage makeup for  iconic productions like The Lion King, Romeo and Juliet, Terracotta Warriors and Medea, to owning a salon where his mastery of  color and form took on new dimensions. A self-proclaimed “art junkie,”  Brent Hedstrom channels his creativity into a wide range of visual art.  In his studio he works with acrylics and oils on wood panels, resin finishes, metal and paper weaving, and a special passion: marbling all kinds of paper into mesmerizing patterns.

Intuitive Ink Painting with Karen Boren Gerstenberger

Intuitive Ink Painting is a fun and free process in which we let go and allow ourselves to make art through intuition, play, and imagination.  Each day I will introduce the materials with a brief demonstration of simple technique, including color blending and brushwork, and invite students to begin (or add to works made in previous days). We will make greeting cards, mini travel journals or small paintings using brush markers filled with vibrantly colored inks. I will offer additional mixed media tools (water-based paint, pens, papers, adhesive) for those who want to explore further.  All supplies will be provided for participants. Guests are welcome to come for one session, or all five. We’ll be using high-quality art supplies in luscious colors, and there will be no pressure or critique. Come to be inspired, express yourself, try new ways of recording your feelings and the events of your life; create a gift or something to help you “take the Ranch home.”

Karen Boren Gerstenberger is an artist who lives and creates by the shores of Puget Sound, Washington, using acrylic paint and mixed media. Her work is held in collections around North America, in Europe and South Africa, and is shown in her gallery in Kingston, Washington. She has a deep reverence for nature and its healing potential in our lives. A dedicated walker, she knows personally the solace, inspiration, freedom, and joy that strolling in nature provides because it helped to release her from 30 years of “artist’s block.” She co-facilitates the Stroll for Well-Being Program at the beautiful Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island, Washington, which continually inspires her.  In her memoir, Because of Katie, Karen tells the true story of her journey with her daughter and family through the world of pediatric cancer. She created and taught WORD SOUP© (a writer’s workshop). Karen founded & is President of Katie’s Comforters Guild and The Katie Gerstenberger Endowment for Cancer

Blood, Biotechnology and Well-Being with David Wellis, Ph.D.

Overviews of Genetics, Cellular Therapies and Aging
Over the past 20 years, biological discoveries and healthcare technologies have evolved at breakneck speed. It is now possible to read your entire genetic blueprint in a few hours, reprogram your immune cells to kill cancer, and mine amounts of data never imagined, all to more effectively treat us more precisely as individuals. Individuals and communities will live longer and healthier lives, and it all starts with our blood!

DNA and Genetics
The discovery of the molecular structure of DNA by Watson and Crick in 1952 has cracked wide open the understanding of our genetic blueprint, how single molecular changes in our DNA can cause disease, how our DNA directs how we respond to therapies, and how we can now edit our DNA to eradicate disease, with technologies such as CRISPR. DNA sequencing and editing technologies applied to agriculture and microorganisms, bacteria and viruses, will enable us to realize both precision medicine and more importantly precision health.

Cellular Therapies
Pharmaceutical development is at an amazing inflection point, using cells to replace damaged and diseased tissues. Cellular therapies are now being applied clinically, after the earlier waves of chemical drugs, such as aspirin, and biologics, such as antibodies (i.e., Humira). The treatment of cancer has leveraged the latest drug development and now it is possible to reprogram your own immune system to fight cancer.

Aging
While cancer involves the aberrant growth of cells, cell aging occurs through similar genetic changes. Scientists now believe our bodies were designed to live longer than we do, and it’s the inhibition of disease that will enhance longevity. Will genetically manipulating individual cells allow us to live both disease-free and longer? In this program we will also briefly review the biology of skincare and wound repair.

David WellisDavid Wellis, Ph.D., is a renowned cell biologist, innovator, and entrepreneur with over 30 years in the life science industry. He currently serves as CEO of FreMon Scientific, advancing precision thawing technologies for improved clinical outcomes. Previously, he was co-founder and CEO of Excellos and led the San Diego Blood Bank, connecting donors with research and clinical opportunities. Dr. Wellis has held leadership roles in antibody and biomedical research, trained at UC Irvine, Emory, Tufts, and UC Berkeley, and contributes to national health and biotech organizations. Recognized as one of San Diego’s Most Influential People, he’s also a frequent speaker at major scientific and leadership forums, including the Young Presidents Organization and the White House.

Judi Jaeger & Bob Reid Concerts

“. . . and the love between the singer, who sings the song well, and truly, and the audience, which has been waiting for the song, and knows it when they hear it, is a true love.” -Malvina Reynolds

Some of the best discoveries are made by accident and that’s what happened in the fusion of the musical talents of Judi Jaeger and Bob Reid. They unwittingly found that perfect harmony while standing next to each other at a music camp jam in the summer of 2015. Their musical spark quickly caught fire and was noticed by those around them – and the successful collaboration between Jaeger and Reid was born. Judi grew up near Montreal, Canada, where her world was filled with music; her mother and brother sang and played guitar and she listened to Leonard Cohen, Peter, Paul & Mary, Pete Seeger and many others. She began her career as a performing songwriter as an expression of her loss after the death of her mother and has written songs for her local domestic violence prevention organization. Bob is a fourth generation Californian, and like Judi, Bob also grew up surrounded by music. Bob’s mom performed in coffeehouses in the 1960’s, while his father was a gospel concert promoter. Bob has been a California Arts Council Artists in Schools, performed at the United Nations in New York, in concert, at festivals and in schools across the United States. His original songs have been sung by Pete Seeger, Bill Harley, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer and many others. Bob was chosen by the Seeger family to perform at memorial concerts for both Pete and Toshi Seeger in New York. Bob has a keen eye for musicality, empowerment, appreciation of nature and social causes in his writing. Jaeger & Reid have been performing around the United States, in Canada and France in a variety of venues, indoors and out, including house concerts.

From Field to Forest and More: Natural Foods For Health with Jill Nussinow

Putting More Plants on Your Plate: What is “Plant-Based Eating”?
Of course, you are here at the Ranch, eating a lot of plants. How do you carry this over to eating at home? And why does it matter? What special nutrients do plants provide? We can learn a lot from science and examining the diets of herbivorous animals; how they get strong and stay healthy. Which plants matter and how do you eat more of them? You will leave with a plan for eating in a more “plant-based” manner.

How Gut Health Leads to Better Health and Improved Cognitive Function
What does one need to eat to have a healthy “microbiome” which encompasses more than just your gut or GI tract. You will learn more about the connection between your gut and your brain, and how this affects your sleep and wellbeing. With growing concerns about brain health, we must consider that you cannot separate the brain from the body. The goal then, is overall health, which often begins in the “gut”. Remember the rock song that stated: “Feed Your Head?” Learn about the foods that do this.

Mushrooms for Food, Mood, Nutrition and More
There are so many species of fungi (mushrooms); a number are edible, some are medicinal and others are poisonous. You will learn about the nutritional composition of a variety of mushrooms, how to cook them, how they are cultivated, how and where they grow, and more. Mushrooms feed the gut and are part of the gut-brain connection. Jill has been foraging for mushrooms for twenty years and speaking at SOMA Wild Mushroom camp for more than 10 years. This fascinating topic is fun and “magic”.

Food As Medicine: Harnessing the Power of Your Food Choices
If food is medicine, can it truly replace pharmaceutical medications? Jill will take you on a tour of current dietary trends, discussing what works and what doesn’t work, and why a plan needs to be individualized. She will review label reading, choosing the “best for you” foods, behavior change and more, in this lively lighthearted look at a serious subject. You will learn tips and tricks on how to fuel your body in the most positive way.

Jill Nussinow, MS, RDN
While Jill Nussinow is a Registered Dietitian who has taught whole food plant-based, vegan cooking for forty years and has taught many nutrition and culinary classes to students at Santa Rosa Junior College where she taught for 30 years, her life has been so much more.  She has written four award winning plant-based cookbooks and has followed and lived her passion for eating well and teaching.

She has created spare time to forage for plants and fungi all year where she lives in Southern Mendocino County and in Sonoma County. She is a sought-after speaker for Sonoma County Wild Mushroom camp, held each January in Occidental, California.

For the past five years she has been deeply involved in the world of breathwork, teaching many students, on Zoom and in-person at The Sea Ranch. She teaches people the benefit of being in a state of “rest and digest” when cooking, and more importantly while eating.

You can see what she does at her website https://www.theveggiequeen.com although it will be morphing into http://www.BreathWiseHealth.com where she hopes to help more people Breathe Better, Eat Better, Feel Better and Live Better.

Healing Stories and Practices
Becoming Whole: Nourishing Practices for Healing Ourselves and a Fracturing World

It is an astonishing time to be alive — an age of tremendous peril and magnificent callings. Krista Tippett and friends and teachers she loves and admires will offer wisdom for tending distress and uncertainty inside ourselves and those around —  while embodying the world we want to inhabit as we go. The week will offer tools for living from Krista’s quarter century of conversation with scientists and theologians, poets and social creatives.

Presenting and teaching will be a renowned and wondrous musician (Joe Henry), a renaissance woman who is most recently an esteemed meditation teacher — and an innovative farmer (Konda Mason); a luminous translator and embodiment of Rumi’s poetry and teachings (Haleh Liza Gafori); a singular, radiant soul of an artist (Jessica Anne Schwartz), and the wise woman who has long been a key healing presence in Krista’s life (Elise Bohaty).

Join these extraordinary teachers and others like you who are part of the generative story of our time for a grounding and life-giving week at Rancho la Puerta.

Unlock Your Best Self: Five Keys to Lasting Change An Inner Fitness Program with Rachel Fleischman

We spend so much energy trying to change our outer world — jobs, relationships, routines — but real transformation begins within. Wellbeing Unlocked is an Inner Fitness program designed to help us move beyond stress, worry, and self-criticism and instead cultivate joy, resilience, and focus.

Lesson 1: Radical Acceptance — Tapping Into Life
Learn how to quiet the restless mind and release the grip of old stories. By softening tension and embracing the moment as it is, we open the door to peace, possibility, and profound newness.

Lesson 2: Mindful Presence — The Art of Paying Attention
Our attention shapes our experience. Explore how shifting focus with curiosity, awe, and kindness can transform stress into clarity and bring a greater sense of calm, meaning, and joy to daily life.

Lesson 3: Self-Compassion — Becoming Your Own Ally
Instead of living with an inner critic, discover how to befriend yourself with kindness, common humanity, and balanced awareness. These practices build resilience, confidence, and emotional well-being.

Lesson 4: Rest & Renewal — Unlocking the Power of Sleep
Sleep is the foundation of health and happiness. Learn science-based techniques and soothing practices that restore deep, nourishing rest — helping you wake feeling refreshed and live with greater energy, clarity, and joy

Lesson 5: Embodiment — Coming Home to Your Body
Reconnect with your body through gentle somatic practices and micro-shifts that release stress, heighten awareness, keep your brain healthy, and bring you back to your natural state of aliveness and vitality.
