Telling Your Story with Katherine Ellison

ADHD Is Not Just for Little Boys
Ten million American adults struggle with serious distraction, forgetfulness and impulsivity, the hallmarks of ADHD. This can become a crisis as we age and lose the structure of family life and jobs. How can you tell if it’s really ADHD? What are the best ways to manage it? Katherine Ellison is a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, author and co-author of a dozen books, and frequent contributor to the Washington Post and other national media. She has also coped with ADHD all her life, although she wasn’t diagnosed until age 48. Come hear Katherine tell you the secrets she has learned — the hard way — about caring for your brain, whatever state it’s in, and getting things done despite clinical-grade distractions, as she shares some hilarious and heartwarming stories about falling into manholes and riding her bike into parked cars along the way.

Writing Workshops
In three writing workshops, which you can attend separately or in serial, Katherine Ellison, a prize-winning veteran journalist and author and co-author of 12 books, will share her tips on productivity, conquering writer’s block, and making your prose shine, whether you want to write personal essays for publication or a memoir for your grandchildren. We’ll have notebooks available because we’ll do some writing in each of these classes.

Start Me Up
Creativity has some rules. How do you get your seat in the chair each day and spend an hour or more making progress in a world full of distractions? How can you start or join a writing group that will help keep you disciplined? What’s a writing group, anyway?

Cardio-writing
In this fast-paced session, based on a strategy Katherine has honed at the Ranch, she’ll help you tone up your prose, with some simple rules that will make your writing lean and spicy.

What’s Your Story?
In this session, we’ll talk about our goals for the year ahead and plan the steps that will ensure we have something to show for them. Katherine will be available for individual coaching.

Katherine Ellison is a Pulitzer-prize winning former foreign correspondent and author and co-author of 12 books. She writes about ADHD, murder, motherhood, and more.

Marbled & Collaged Art with Brent Hedstrom

Where creativity and color flows.  Step into the peaceful calm of the art studio and check in with your creative self.  When we’re surrounded by quiet, ideas move through us more freely-color seems brighter, and even the simplest materials begin to spark new possibilities. In this hands on workshop, you’’ll explore the magical, meditative process of paper marbling- a playful technique that transforms ink and color into swirling, one-of-a-kind patterns.  The method is unexpected, the results are always surprising, and the experience itself is calming.

Once your marbled paper prints are complete, we’ll move into editing, where you’ll layer, reassemble, and mount your designs into expressive notecards and personal works of art.  It’s a beautiful way to let go of perfection and allow your hands and intuition to lead.

What you’ll leave with:
   – A set of handmade notecards using your marbled papers and a fresh connection to your creative rhythm rooted in stillness and play.
   – Both the process and results will surprise you.

Labyrinth Walks and Journaling with Deborah Burand

CIRCLING THE RANCH:  UNFURL THE CREATIVE POWERS OF LABYRINTH WALKING AND JOURNALING

Step into the power of labyrinth walking and journaling to capture new insights and spark your creative spirit.

As we walk the labyrinth together, we will look for the ancient symbols incorporated into the Ranch’s labyrinth to help set our creative intentions and reveal new insights. We will navigate the labyrinth’s twists and turns to find paces and places that can give shape and texture to the pages of our sketchbooks and journals. We will celebrate our creative gifts and talents, in all their stages of becoming.  And we will forge paths for incorporating labyrinth walks and journaling into an ongoing meditative, creative practice – at the Ranch and beyond.

Meet at the Labyrinth in Emily’s Forest of Dreams.

Each session will begin with a labyrinth walk.  Then we will journal together.

Materials: You are invited to bring a sketchbook or journal to each session to capture your labyrinth walk experiences.  You can bring your own pencils, pens and paints, or use those that we’ll have ready to share with you at the labyrinth.

Day One’s Labyrinth Walk:   Releasing Old Ways of Seeing

Invitation: You are invited to bring a question or concern that you are pondering. This is a chance to release old preoccupations and discover pathways to new ways of seeing and being.  Then you can bring those insights to the pages of your sketchbooks and journals.

Day Two’s Labyrinth Walk:  Receiving New Ways of Filling the Well

Invitation: You are invited to draw on all of your senses to deepen your experience of the labyrinth and its surroundings.  This is your time to fill the well that waters your unique, creative spirit.  Then you can give voice and color to that creative spirit through journaling.

Day Three’s Labyrinth Walk:  Returning Home with a Refreshed Creative Spirit

Invitation:  You are invited to use this labyrinth walk to plan how you will carry your refreshed creative spirit home.  This is an opportunity to take stock and reflect.  Then you can create journal reminders of the labyrinth paths that have stirred your creative spirit into action.

Labyrinth Facilitator:  Professor of Law Emerita Deborah Burand has shared the powers of labyrinth walking with fellow travelers in the United States, France, Singapore and here in Mexico at Rancho La Puerta.  When not circling the globe to walk labyrinths, she teaches law in Paris for New York University and creates art of all kinds at her cottage in Saugatuck, Michigan.

Deborah’s essay, Circling the Ranch, which was published online by the Ranch to commemorate its 80th anniversary, describes how she brought her then 86- year-old father to walk the Ranch’s labyrinth. The Council on Foreign Relations recently named Deborah as one of its Higher Education Ambassador Fellows for 2024-2025. In May 2024, Deborah was presented with NYU Law School’s Distinguished Teaching Award in recognition of her inspirational and innovative pedagogy and outstanding contributions to the legal academy.  The Financial Times also has recognized her multi-disciplinary teaching materials for their creativity and innovation in sustainable finance education.

Doing Endings Well with Karen Buckley

Doing Endings Well: A Joyful Journey of Remembrance and Renewal
Amid the vibrant week of Día de los Muertos, join a soulful celebration of life’s beautiful cycles. Through story, reflection, and ritual, we’ll honor the people, places, and moments that have shaped us. As we offer gratitude for what has been, we open to what is being born. This is not a somber farewell, but a joyful tribute to the living rhythm of remembrance, loving, and becoming. Let’s celebrate the beautiful rhythm of change and make space for more life to flow through us. As we become artists of transition, we discover wisdom, laughter, gratitude – and the sweet freedom that comes when endings are done well.

The Gift of Letting Go
Appreciating the best of what has been – the love, learning, and laughter – we spark new life filled with gratitude, creativity, and ease.  Become an artist of transition as you practice releasing with grace, turning endings into beginnings, and memory into momentum. Through insight, guided reflection and simple rituals, we’ll discover how letting go can open the way to peace, vitality, and creative possibility. Together we’ll find renewal not by holding on, but by stepping gently into the unfolding mystery of what’s next.

The Art of Completion
Endings, done well, open the door to more vitality, health and renewal in our lives.
Completion is an act of wholeness, a moment to pause, gather the joy, lessons, and legacy of what’s come before. You’ll leave with a personal practice and simple ways to mark closure, carry forward what truly matters, and walk onward – lighter, freer, and more at peace.

Living Forward – The Heart of Renewal
A heart-centered way to embrace new beginnings with curiosity, courage, and trust in life’s unfolding rhythm. After every ending comes a stirring – the subtle thrill of what’s next. Living forward is to move through change with openness and trust, carrying the gifts of what has been – the delights, care, and wisdom, without clinging to the form they once took. It invites curiosity instead of certainty, creativity instead of control and the gentle courage to say, “That chapter was beautiful — and I’m ready for what’s next.”

Dying Responsibly with Baxley Andresen

Dying Responsibly

Death will happen, let’s prepare. Learn about the choices to make sure your death can align with how you live.

Introduction: Dying Responsibly: Checking in with Your Choices
The choices to make around our own death and dying can be hard to do. In this first class, we start with the question for the week of “How Can I Create a Good Death?”.  We begin with prompts with an inquisitive advance directive which we will revisit at the end of the four sessions. Together we review how we like to be cared for when we cannot advocate for ourselves, and what we’d like to happen to our bodies after our death. It is with this reflection that we start to make plans about what we need and want around our death and dying.

Finding Your Support Team: No One Dies Alone
After a review of the first class, we will discuss how hospice and Death Doulas can be supportive to not only a person in the dying process, but even for the entire family. How can these allies serve you as a caregiver or yourself near the end of life? We will also deep dive into what can be pre-planned to alleviate any unknowns near the end of life. Practical, yes, but truly helpful to family and loved ones.

Home Funerals and Natural Burial: The old is new again!
Natural Burial and home wakes have been around longer than our most commonly known practices of today but have become more popular in the last thirty years in the United States. Having our dead at home is not commonly seen in the United States, but can occur legally. In this class, we go over what a home funeral looks like, and how to have a wake at home. Additionally, we discuss natural burial and what to expect at a green cemetery. Did you even know you may be able to bury on your own land?

The Newest Options and Revisiting Your Choices
We will learn about the newest options available in deathcare: aquamation, natural organic reduction, and other ideas not regularly offered or discussed. After this introduction, we can review the choices you have initially made on your handout and see if anything has changed.

What, if any, needs to be addressed when you get home? This will be a time for questions and an open discussion on your end-of-life plans, and a time to review your desires for your end of life that you previously recorded at the beginning of this series.

Baxley Andresen is an owner of a natural burial ground in Central California. Her journey in deathcare started with working for Alua Arthur of Going with Grace, then working as a Funeral Arranger at FRIENDS Funeral Home in Los Angeles. She found Creston Cemetery in 2021, an old pioneer cemetery in Central California, ready for some attention and an update. Baxley manages the land, trees, burials and other aspects of this small but revered cemetery alongside Ed Bixby of Destination Destiny Memorials. She serves as Vice President on the Green Burial Council and volunteers with the Valley Chevra Kadisha, a group that sits alongside the dead and performs ritual washings of the deceased. Baxley knows and believes that “though grief and loss is inevitable, being unprepared isn’t.”

Unearthing Grief: Honoring What Love Misses with Susannah Mars and Julia Francis

Explore loss through creative expression and honoring of the land. Sing, write and walk the path of grief and praise.

Susannah Mars and Julia Francis collaborate to offer three creative experiential workshops culminating in a ceremonial musical performance for all that includes the contributions of workshop participants and opens the door to collective healing and growth.

Exploring Your Voice Through Your Ancestors (1 hour)
Join us for a powerful sound-based workshop and explore vocal practices that welcome grief expression, attune our vibrational fields, and facilitate collective healing across time and space. Accompanied by crystal singing bowls, we will explore our inner landscape, moving between harmony and dissonance to shake loose old stories and patterns that no longer serve us.

Grief Journaling (up to 2 hours)
Some of us have grief stories that we long to share. Using our voices to tell them helps heal us and others. Lean into a path of deep listening and unearth pieces of your story that have whispered in your ear but have remained underground. We will give voice to these whispers, illuminating the invisible threads between ourselves, our loved ones, and community. Come with a pre-written, one-page grief story to share. Then we will welcome the beauty of the unexpected, crafting new stories informed by the group, your parents, ancestors, and/or the Great Mystery.

Grief Walk…. (up to 2 hours)
We will gather with Mt. Kuchumaa in view, acknowledging and inviting the land to work with us. Walking together in silence, we will feel into the landscape and open to what it has to offer. Incorporating sound-making and writing into our journey, we practice the art of giving, receiving and healing.

Concert
Julia and Susannah will lead a celebratory hour-long concert, weaving together live vocals, guitar accompaniment, pre-recorded vocal tracks, and live looping. This experience invites deep listening and community with joyful and optional audience participation. Guests who attended any of Julia and Susannah’s earlier classes will have the opportunity to share emotionally resonant contributions from their respective journeys, resulting in a co-created sacred soundscape and altar honoring the space of our ancestors. Guests will leave with laughter and loving songs in their hearts.
