Introduction to iPhoneography

The best camera is the one that is with you! This workshop will review best practices for photography using exclusively your iPhone or any camera. Photography offers significant benefits for brain health by fostering mindfulness, reducing stress, and enhancing memory and creativity. Engaging with photography can improve mental well-being through mindful observation, creative expression, and social connection. A review of principles of photography, tips for optimizing digital capture and choosing subjects that work best with the iPhone and more will be covered. Learn about present-moment awareness, the act of composition, and mindful engagement with your iPhone Photography.

The iPhone Camera

Photography provides a creative outlet for self-expression and can help individuals process their emotions.  Mobile devices have significantly revolutionized photography by making it more accessible, versatile, and integrated with social media. These computers in our pockets have democratized photography, enabling anyone to capture and share high-quality images instantly. In this workshop we will review best practices for using the camera, review the settings, tools, and hidden features, to help you take your images from snapshots to professional quality.

The Art of Editing using the Photos App

In this workshop we will review tools and features of the built in Photos App, and cover tips for organizing and finding your photos. Photography can serve as a tool for memory and storage recall. Looking at photos regularly can reactivate mental representations of past events and solidify those memories. Follow along with the live demonstration to enhance your images or create digital pieces. Time permitting we may review the Snapseed App by Google. (Available for Android too).  Come with your phone fully charged

Yoni Mayeri is a professional photographer and early pioneer of iPhoneography whose work explores the intersection of art, technology, and everyday observation. With over three decades behind the camera—and more than fifteen years devoted to the iPhone—she reveals the creative potential of the device that is always within reach. Her photographs, exhibited in galleries and museums, are created entirely on the iPhone, reflecting a deeply personal and intuitive approach to image-making. Drawing on her background as an educator for Nikon, Minolta, and Polaroid, Yoni brings both technical mastery and an artist’s eye to her teaching. Through her workshops and courses at Stanford University, UC Berkeley, and venues around the world— including Rancho La Puerta, The Garden Club of America, and Clos Mirabel in France—she guides students of all levels to see more clearly, compose more thoughtfully, and transform ordinary moments into compelling images. Her teaching emphasizes not just how to use the camera, but how to see: light, form, color, and the beauty of the present moment. Her Instagram serves as an ongoing visual journal, with every image captured and edited solely on the iPhone: Http://instagram.com/yoni_iphone_photography

Healthy Hedonism: Why Feeling Good Is Good for You with Dr. Erica Oberg

Healthy Hedonism: Why Feeling Good Is Good for You

Healthy Hedonism reframes pleasure as a biological imperative—and reveals how feeling good may be one of the most powerful longevity strategies we have.  In modern life, many adults live in a state of chronic survival physiology, where stress, vigilance, and restriction quietly shape our biology. Yet our bodies are wired for something more. Through the science of pleasure, connection, beauty, novelty—even sensuality—we discover how experiences that feel good regulate the nervous system, optimize hormones, and extend healthspan.  In this opening talk, we explore how to make the Vitality Shift—moving both our consciousness and our physiology from surviving to thriving. You’ll begin to see how designing a life that feels deeply good is not indulgent. It is intelligent biology.

The Culinary Alchemist: Why How We Eat Matters More Than What

In a culture obsessed with restriction and “clean eating,” we’ve forgotten a fundamental truth: pleasure is a biological requirement for healthy metabolism.  Healthy Hedonism teaches that feeling good is not the reward for a healthy diet—it is the very signal that tells the body to digest, repair, and thrive. In this talk, Dr. Oberg discusses her clinical research and reframes the dinner table from a place of discipline to a site where the environment, company, and sensory delight act as powerful metabolic primers.  By shifting from food fretting to intelligent indulgence, meals become events that regulate cortisol, improve insulin signaling, and deepen connection. Discover why the Mediterranean lifestyle works not only because of olive oil and fresh ingredients—but because of the curiosity, conversation, and pleasure that season every bite.

The Longevity of Joy: Reversing the Hidden Triggers of Aging

Longevity without vitality is not success—it is simply a longer period of survival. This session explores the hidden triggers that quietly accelerate aging, from chronic stress and inflammation to the subtle habits of survival physiology. We move beyond the traditional “anti-aging” model and toward a new understanding: joy, beauty, and connection are powerful forms of preventative medicine.  You will learn how pleasurable experiences influence measurable biomarkers including HRV, cortisol rhythms, and inflammatory signaling. Drawing on both longevity science and cultural wisdom, Dr. Oberg shows how small shifts in lifestyle can help us move from vigilance and depletion into vitality and resilience. This talk reveals that a life rich with meaning, curiosity, and delight may be one of the most scientifically robust strategies we have for staying young.

From Surviving to Thriving: Recovering from Stress to Build a Better Brain

Most of us treat our brains like hard drives—tools for productivity that we worry will eventually wear out. But in the philosophy of Healthy Hedonism, the brain is the ultimate organ of experience, allowing us to savor beauty, connection, curiosity, and awe.  In this session we move beyond the fear of cognitive decline and explore the science of the Vitality Shift in the brain. When the nervous system experiences safety, pleasure, and sensory richness, the brain shifts from survival mode into a state that supports creativity, resilience, and deep engagement with life.  You’ll learn how experiences like nature, music, sleep, and meaningful connection influence mitochondrial health, neuroplasticity, and emotional vitality. From the neuroscience of awe to the power of everyday “sensory enhancers,” this talk reveals that a vibrant brain isn’t just about memory—it’s about expanding our capacity to fully experience life.

Erica ObergDr. Erica Oberg, ND, MPH is an integrative physician, longevity strategist, and author of Healthy Hedonism: Why Feeling Good Is Good for You, a science-based reframe of pleasure as a biological driver of vitality.

With over two decades of experience in clinical medicine, NIH-funded health promotion research, and public health leadership, Dr. Oberg has built her career at the intersection of precision science and lived expansion. Her work challenges the cultural belief that health requires restriction, teaching instead that intelligently attuned pleasure regulates the nervous system, optimizes physiology, and supports long-term healthspan.

Through the lenses of hormonal intelligence, nervous system regulation, mitochondrial resilience, and experiential design, she demonstrates that joy, beauty, sensuality, novelty, and purpose are not indulgences — they are measurable drivers of well-being.

Dr. Oberg serves as Medical Director of Marqi Medical and leads an exclusive concierge medical practice in La Jolla, California, where she integrates advanced diagnostics, regenerative therapies, and personalized vitality strategies.

A former Founding Medical Director of Bastyr University California and published researcher with over 30 peer-reviewed papers, she brings scientific rigor to wellness. For more than a decade, she has been featured faculty at Rancho La Puerta and other health spas, integrating cutting-edge medicine with experiential retreat programming.

A Jazz week with Ben Williams

When it comes to black music, Washington, D.C. produces its share of game-changers. That long list includes Duke Ellington, Chuck Brown, Marvin Gaye, Shirley Horn, Roberta Flack, Bad Brains, Meshell Ndegeocello, Wale, and Oddisee. You can add Ben Williams to that venerated roster.

For more than a decade, Williams has steadily become one of the most acclaimed and versatile bassists in modern jazz. In 2009, he won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. He has performed/recorded with such giants as Pat Metheny, George Benson, Stefon Harris, David Sanborn, Lauryn Hill, Wynton Marsalis, Robert Glasper, Maxwell, and Nicholas Payton. In 2013 and 2015 Williams received the DownBeat Magazine Critics Poll Rising Star Award for Bass. Williams became a “Rising Star” when he won the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition Award that landed him his first record-deal with Concord Records. Thereafter, he recorded and released State of Art in 2011 with his band, Sound Effect. The Album received an impressive 4.5 Star Review in DownBeat Magazine and reached #1 on the charts of iTunes and the National BillBoard. He was named the 2011 iTtunes Breakthrough Artist of the Year in the category of jazz.

As a leader, Williams revealed his talents as a keen composer and bandleader on his first two Concord Records albums – State of Art (2011) and Coming of Age (2015). As gripping as those albums are, they don’t prepare you for Williams’ newest album, I AM A MANreleased Rainbow Blonde, a new imprint co-owned by singer, songwriter, and kindred spirit, José James. Sonically, the new album departs grandly from the mostly acoustic instrumental settings of his previous albums. Williams imbued his love for modern R&B and hip-hop and his socio-political awareness subtly on State of Art and Coming of Age. But on I AM A MAN, he brings them to the fore with mesmerizing vocal-centric songs that will surely raise his profile higher in modern soul and rap circles.

With the help from sound engineer Brian Bender, I AM A MAN boasts a humid and hazy sound that recalls Soulaquarian albums released by The Roots, Erykah Badu, Bilal, D’Angelo, Common, and Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor. “I wanted to make this not just a musical statement, but sonically, I wanted to dig into a different sound. We had the opportunity to work in the studio to craft some sounds. What you hear is Brian’s brilliance with engineering. I wanted this record to deal with the past, present, and future,” Williams says.

Joy’s melodic offerings are a healing balm to an anxious heart. Each song welcomes the close listener in with open arms always beckoning truth, authenticity and courage to tell one’s story. I love boots, guitars, mangoes, horses, jasmine blossoms, road trips, cloud watching, donuts and my family. I believe in the power of inner peace. I understand the glory of a righteous twist out. I make time to marvel at the mysteries of the world around me. I pour my fears and anxiety into vectors for healing. Pedicures make me giggle but music is my gateway to happiness.

In addition to spending most days outdoors in the garden, tending to his animals, and learning the art of butchery, Owens would cook for and with the many international students his family boarded. Marbled & Collaged Art

Marbled & Collaged Art

Where creativity and color flows.  Step into the peaceful calm of the art studio and check in with your creative self.  When we’re surrounded by quiet, ideas move through us more freely-color seems brighter, and even the simplest materials begin to spark new possibilities. In this hands on workshop, you’’ll explore the magical, meditative process of paper marbling- a playful technique that transforms ink and color into swirling, one-of-a-kind patterns.  The method is unexpected, the results are always surprising, and the experience itself is calming.

Once your marbled paper prints are complete, we’ll move into editing, where you’ll layer, reassemble, and mount your designs into expressive notecards and personal works of art.  It’s a beautiful way to let go of perfection and allow your hands and intuition to lead.

What you’ll leave with:

A set of handmade notecards using your marbled papers and a fresh connection to your creative rhythm rooted in stillness and play.

Both the process and results will surprise you.
