Class participants and other Ranch guests are invited to participate in the fun and friendly poker tournament. Prizes will be given for top placements. All skill levels are welcome!

Lorraine Clayton is the co-founder of All-In Academy Poker LLC, running in-person and online poker training/tournaments, and the founder and regular player in a long-standing monthly home poker game playing cash and tournament formats. She has helped organize multiple charity poker events and played in various casino poker tournaments. She won 3rd place in the 2013 Rancho La Puerta Poker Tournament. In addition, Lorraine is a board member and active participant in numerous charities, has a career in technical project management, volunteers at celebrity and PGA golf tournaments, is a recreational golfer, and poker enthusiast. She loves living in beautiful San Diego and has an adult son living in the Los Angeles area.

Notes on the program
The two late nocturnes in Chopin’s Opus 55 are a study in contrast.  The first, in F minor, is cool and restrained, expressive in its simplicity; the second, in E-flat major is heated and passionate, expressive in its complexity.

Chopin’s third and final sonata was written during a time of advancing illness. Weak and often suffering, he composed what for me is the perfect Romantic sonata. The first movement, rich in melody and original harmonies, is also full of brilliant counterpoint. The expressive flow is so natural and spontaneous that it’s easy to miss how ingenious the formal structure is. The scherzo features a witty perpetual motion in the outer sections and a contrasting middle section in four-part harmony. The slow movement, also in ternary form, is stately and heartbreaking. The finale belies the image of the composer as weak and hyper-sensitive. It is a robust, surging, virile, even militaristic — a call to arms.  Its Slavic-accented theme is a reminder that for Chopin, the cause of Polish independence was paramount.

Aleck Karis has performed recitals, chamber music, and concertos across the Americas, Europe, Japan, and China. As the pianist of the new music ensemble Speculum Musicae he has participated in over a hundred premieres and performed at major American and European festivals. His appearances with orchestra have ranged from concertos by Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin to those of Stravinsky, Messiaen and Carter.  His seven solo discs on Bridge Records are: Chopin/Carter/Schumann, Mozart, Stravinsky, Cage, Feldman/Webern/Wolpe, Poulenc, and most recently, Debussy. His two discs on Roméo Records are Music of Philip Glass and Late Chopin. He has studied at the Manhattan School and Juilliard, and his teachers include William Daghlian, Artur Balsam and Beveridge Webster. He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the UC San Diego music department.

Odiseo offers hands-on culinary experiences, 3.5 hours each, during which you will enjoy preparing your own meal along with fellow cooks. Classes take place at La Cocina Que Canta, our culinary center on Tuesday and Wednesday, at 4pm. In addition, Chef Odiseo will collaborate with La Cocina Que Canta’s Executive Chef Reyna Venegas and her team to create a special feast (with wine pairing!) on Thursday at 4:45pm.

Karl Anthony is an award-winning singer/songwriter and a proud member of NOAH (National Organization of Arts in Health), dedicated to advocating for the healing power of music in healthcare. For nearly twenty years, he has served as a healing arts professional at the San Diego Rady Children’s Hospital, infusing his work and music with a message of hope for children and families.

Leading drum circles in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services (CAPS) at the hospital as a REMO Certified Health Rhythms Facilitator, Anthony promotes the scientifically researched benefits of community drumming as a tool for equalizing and building communities.

Each year, Karl and his wife Noi lead travel service trips to Thailand, where they have a home and reside part of the year. These trips support musical instruments for local schools and orphanages.

Robert Sulatycky has a long history with the Bocuse d’Or. Representing Canada in 1999, he placed fourth and was awarded the “Prix Viande” or best meat prize. He has since mentored both Canadian and American chef candidates and was honored to be a member of the international jury for the 2007 and 2013 edition of the competition. He was instrumental as culinary advisor for Team USA in 2015 taking silver and 2017 taking the gold. He was appointed head coach for Team USA by Chefs Thomas Keller & Daniel Boulud for the 2019 & 2023 Bocuse d’Or.

His culinary career has taken him to the helms of the kitchens of Four Seasons Hotels in Toronto and Chicago. This was then followed by simultaneously leading the brigades at the Beverly Hills and Hotel Bel Air where he had the pleasure of cooking for Hollywood stars. Chef Sulatycky once again worked for Four Seasons, developing a restaurant and dining concepts for the new Four Seasons Private Residences in Los Angeles California, opening in 2020.

2021 saw Chef Sulatycky at The Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park, CA, taking the helm of the lauded Madera Restaurant. Reaching the pinnacle of the culinary world, Sulatycky was awarded one Michelin star by the venerable French dining guide.

Chef Sulatycky’s passion for wine has also taken him to Napa, CA where he is the managing partner of Mithra Winery. A small production, boutique winery located on Mount Veeder. Mithra has a reputation of producing exceptional cabernet sauvignons.

Chef Sulatycky is a co-founder of iQKitchen Inc., a technology company that has developed simple and intuitive app based solutions to many of the basic challenges that chefs face in the kitchen.

Labyrinth Revolution

Labyrinths are becoming a part of our landscape in parks, gardens, on school playground and at hospitals. Where did this design originate and how do we use labyrinths to enhance personal insight and well-being? Rina Shere will share the history and purpose of labyrinths and how they can be used for spiritual development and walking meditation. Throughout the week Rina will facilitate four thematic walks on the beautiful Rancho La Puerta labyrinth.

The Labyrinth Revolution
The ancient practice of using labyrinths as a tool for spiritual development and to lessen anxiety is undergoing a revolution.  Labyrinths are now built in parks, on school playgrounds, and university campuses. How do we enter the space of the labyrinth for an optimum experience? Weaving history, art, stories, and wellness research, Rina will present the evolution of the labyrinth from diverse cultural and spiritual traditions and share best practices for traveling the labyrinth and processing your journey. Hungry for Words, Hungry for Life

Your Life in Six Words (evening program)
With so much noise in our everyday lives, it’s often difficult to focus on what lies at the heart of who we are and where we want to go in our life’s journey. Developed in 2006 by writer Larry Smith, the six-word memoir format has prompted tens of thousands to craft micro autobiographies, with the most extraordinary curated into three best-selling books and featured in The New Yorker and NPR. In this session, we will work through this remarkable process to craft your own short life story as a tool for self-discovery and to distill what’s important to you. The goal is to create a memoir that helps you confirm or reconsider your life’s path, or perhaps provide inspiration for what might be next. Note: writing talent not required.

Day-time sessions:
No One Loves a Perfect Heroine
Memoir writers must learn to take a step back and recreate themselves as a character. This is harder than it sounds. Human nature propels us to put forward a perfect façade, yet if a character never makes a mistake, then how can readers root for her? Building on your six-word memoir, we will drill further into what the process revealed about you as a potential hero or heroine in your own life story and help you embrace your strengths and weaknesses. If you miss the evening class, fear not. You’ll be given the tools to build your own six-word memoir post class.

The Power of Details
The ability to capture notable details elevates any type of writing or storytelling, whether if it’s just to recapture memories of past travels, lost loved ones, to strengthen writing or journaling or even tell a better story at a cocktail party. We will work through a series exercises using favorite childhood foods and storyboarding to demonstrate techniques to find telling details in your existing tales and to perhaps encourage you to be even more observant of how life’s small moments describe a larger tale.

If You Can Talk, You Can Probably Write
If something is worth hearing or listening to, it’s very probably worth reading. So, this above all: Find your own voice,” says Christopher Hitchens. In this session, we will explore your potential writing voice, and building on your earlier six-word memoir, the story or stories that lie within you. The word “souvenir” is French for “to remember.” At the conclusion of this class, you’ll be given exercises to inspire putting your memories and stories on paper, hopefully creating a special souvenir of your time at the Ranch.

Kathleen Flinn is an internationally bestselling author, teacher and speaker best known for her series of acclaimed memoirs starting with The New York Times bestseller The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry (Viking/Penguin Random House). This week, Flinn will utilize exercises from her popular “Hungry for Words” food and travel writing workshops as well as her experiences as a memoir writer to help guide guests through the questions for which many of us find answers difficult to define. Her sessions will be relevant whether you’re interested in crafting a memoir, keeping a journal or simply seeking a structured way to think about what’s important in your life and where you want to go next on your journey.

A writer and journalist for more than 25 years, Flinn has been a residence writer at the Richard Hugo House in Seattle and taught at the Writer’s Center in Washington, D.C., the University of Washington and the University of Texas at Austin and more than a dozen writing and culinary focused conferences.

Unleash Your Inner Athlete for Brain Health and Longevity

We all want to live a long and (more importantly) vibrant life. What if I told you the key to unlocking this through the exercise door is by training like an athlete? Think you’re too old for this? Think again! The revelation of neuroplasticity tells us that our brains are always changing and adapting. If we feed the brain the right information and test it through movement, we can fight off cognitive decline. In this 4 session series, we will have 2 fitness training sessions and 2 hybrid lecture with movement classes. Our fitness sessions focus on using movement and exercise to challenge our brain and nervous system to keep us sharp and mobile as we age. This class can be modified for all fitness levels. Our hybrid lecture sessions will dive into the constantly emerging research that shows us how we can preserve and optimize our brain health while teaching some easy but powerful techniques to maximize brain function and while improving mobility and joint health.

 

Eric Cruz started his journey in health and fitness at the age of 13. After growing up as an overweight youth, he found exercise and nutrition as an empowering path for changing his life. Through reading and watching anything he could get my hands on related to health, he became his own experiment and first client. As he started to see results, he found that this lifestyle not only made him better physically, but mentally as well. He gained self-confidence and a stronger drive for achievement and knew this was what he would spend the rest of his life practicing.

Eager to get out into the field, he completed a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from Missouri State University and later moved to California. There, he attended California State University at Long Beach and received a Master’s degree in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology. While his conventional education is foundational, he believes that continuing education is where health professionals really evolve and make a difference.

Distinguish Physical Hunger from Emotional Hunger
Hunger is not only a physical cue for food but also signals our emotional and spiritual needs. This connection between food and emotion is not only cultural  but is hardwired in our neurobiology. In this workshop, we will explore the science of hunger and understand why our emotions physiologically drive our desire for food. Participants will learn to distinguish emotional hunger from physical hunger and engage in an evidence-based practice to manage cravings mindfully without reactivity.

Broaden your Nutrition: 5 Scientific Pillars of Wellbeing
Nutrition refers not only to the food that we eat but also the company that we keep, how we move our bodies and engage in sleep, rest and play, the content we consume and the words that we use to speak to ourselves. In this workshop we will broaden our definition of nutrition to include food, sleep, movement, nature, rest, play and the mind’s diet. Participants will learn actionable guidance on how to incorporate these nutrients into their daily lives in order to enhance their physical health and mental and emotional wellbeing.

The Saboteurs that show up in your Diet and your Life
Our relationship with food is a mirror to our relationship to ourselves. In this workshop, we will identify the 10 most common saboteurs including perfectionism, self-limiting beliefs, lack of healthy boundaries that not only impact our relationship with food but also our work, our relationships with ourselves, co-workers, family and friends. Participants will engage in an experiential writing practice to uncover unique saboteurs that show up in our daily lives. 

Self-Compassion: The (Surprising) Key to Transforming your Life
Self-compassion is not only kind, but is essential to our growth. In this workshop we will discuss why positive self acceptance and self compassion are necessary to forming positive habits and creating durable, lasting change. We will learn the three elements of an effective self-compassion practice: awareness, mindfulness and embracing our common humanity and together set the groundwork to implementing this essential practice on your own.

John Scott Marrone has over 30 years of experience teaching in the New York area. In addition to Astronomy, Scott teaches Forensics, Environmental Studies, and Oceanography. He has been recognized by Ciba-Geigy Corporation for his work in promoting science literacy and received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in 2007 from Manhattan College. In 1998, Scott was invited by the Aruban Government to substitute for astronomer Jay Pasachoff to lead the observation of the total solar eclipse.  Most recently, Scott led the public observing session on Mauna Kea.  Scott has also led observing on cruises in the Galapagos and Tahiti.

In addition, John Scott Marrone has been recognized as an outstanding conductor and director of many musical organizations. His experience covers the entire spectrum of orchestral and choral music from Renaissance to Contemporary, leading an impressive array of performing organizations both in the United States and Europe. In addition to his own Allegro Chamber Ensemble, Mr. Marrone has worked with the English Chamber Orchestra, Solisti di Roma, Orchestre de Paris, Oratorio Society of New York, Mendelssohn Choir of Connecticut, Greenwich Choral Society, and many other organizations including concerts and tours. His choir performed for Pope John Paul II in St. Peter’s Basilica and at the papal audience before 250,000 people in Rome. With the Allegro Chamber Ensemble, Mr. Marrone performed a series of concerts at the Salzburg Music Festival, St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London, and at the Sainte Chapelle in 1994 for the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Paris. With his choirs he has conducted at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, Westminster Abbey in London, the Duomo in Florence and many other locations throughout Europe. Mr. Marrone holds a Professional Diploma in Piano from the Brooklyn Conservatory and a Master’s in Conducting from Columbia University.
