In 2020, he launched a porch concert series with his family to build community during the pandemic, support local musicians, and contribute to city music programs. Tino performed with violinist Monique Mead for Beethoven in the Face of Adversity – a project which brought concerts to people facing adversity who could otherwise not experience live music. This project spanned 50 performances and 3 countries over the course of 250 days, culminating in a performance at Carnegie Music Hall. Meditation and Human Flourishing

Meditation is Your Natural State
Overcoming the Overactive Mind
The End of Stress, Distress, & Suffering
Human Flourishing: Enduring Happiness, Serenity, & Freedom

Meditation is not what you think it is. It’s much more. Perhaps you’ve tried meditation, but you just couldn’t do it. Perhaps you couldn’t fit it into a hectic schedule, or you were overcome by a restless monkey-mind. You gave up more than once in frustration or boredom. In the news, media, and from friends you hear about the benefits of this practice, but you never experienced these for yourself. Dr. Elliott Dacher will share his unique perspective as a trained physician and lifelong meditator. He will demonstrate, with clear scientific evidence, personal experience, and precise instructions what wise women and men have long understood – effective meditation has the power to heal the body at gross and subtle levels, awaken your mind, and ignite your spirit. It offers that illusive “more to Life.” This experiential four-session progressive program will provide you with the understandings and skills that will enable you to develop a successful meditation practice, experience its full benefits, and effectively integrate it into your daily life.

Elliott S. Dacher, M.D., practiced internal medicine for 20 years before pursuing an extensive education in Eastern psychology and practices amongst the wise healers of Asia. His last book –Aware, Awake, Alive – is the course text. Blood, Biotechnology and Well-Being – Overviews of Genetics, Cellular Therapies and Aging

Discover the provoking and revolutionary technologies that will not only treat each of us more precisely but will drive longevity and healthier communities.

Blood, Biotechnology and Well-Being – Overviews of Genetics, Cellular Therapies and Aging.
Over the past 20 years, biological discoveries and healthcare technologies have evolved at breakneck speed.  It is now possible to read your entire genetic blueprint in a few hours, reprogram your immune cells to kill cancer, and mine amounts of data never before imagined, all to more effectively treat us more precisely as individuals.  Individuals and communities will live longer and healthier lives, and it all starts with our blood!

Blood, Biotechnology and Well-Being – DNA and Genetics.
The discovery of the molecular structure of DNA by Watson and Crick in 1952 has cracked wide open the understanding of our genetic blueprint, how single molecular changes in our DNA can cause disease, how our DNA directs how we respond to therapies, and how we can now edit our DNA to eradicate disease, with technologies such as CRISPR.  DNA sequencing and editing technologies applied to agriculture and microorganisms, bacteria and viruses, will enable us to realize both precision medicine and more importantly precision health.

Blood, Biotechnology and Well-Being – Cellular Therapies.
Pharmaceutical development is at an amazing inflection point, using cells to replace damaged and diseased tissues.  Cellular therapies are just now being applied clinically, after the earlier waves of chemical drugs, such as aspirin, and biologics, such as antibodies (i.e., Humira).  The treatment of cancer has followed drug development and now it is possible to leverage and even reprogram your own immune system to fight cancer.

Blood, Biotechnology and Well-Being – Aging.
While cancer involves the aberrant growth of cells, cell senescence, or aging, occurs through similar genetic changes.  Scientists now believe our bodies were designed to live longer than we actually do, and it’s the inhibition of disease that will enhance longevity.  Will genetically manipulating individual cells allow us to live both disease-free and longer?  In this program we will also briefly review the biology of skincare and wound repair.

David Wellis,  Ph.D., is a nationally known cell biologist, innovator and entrepreneur with over 30 years of engagement in the life science industry.  David currently serves as the CEO of Excellos, a company focused on supplying cellular products and services, together with process development and manufacturing expertise to scientists and clinicians working with cell and gene therapies.  Prior to Excellos, he served as the CEO of the San Diego Blood Bank (SDBB) for nearly 9 years.  At SDBB, David’s vision was to connect altruistic blood donors with basic research and clinical study opportunities, furthering SDBB’s mission of ensuring the health of the community.  David joined SDBB following his tenure at a variety of companies that developed antibody therapeutics and tools for biomedical research, diagnostic and applied markets. David received his B.S. from UC Irvine, an M.S. and Ph.D. from Emory University, postdoctoral training at Tufts University and UC Berkeley, and business training at Santa Clara University and UC Berkeley.  David serves on the Executive Committee of the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute at UC San Diego, and has held board and committee roles in several national blood bank organizations, the National Institutes of Health and biotechnology companies.  He has presented to local and national audiences, Young Presidents Organization and has been invited to the White House twice.  For the past two years, he was named to the SD500 list of Most Influential People in San Diego.

Healthy Hearing, Healthy Life

Hearing Loss and the Brain
Research over the last several years has demonstrated a strong correlation between hearing loss and cognition. We will answer your questions about hearing loss, talk about prevailing theories about why hearing loss seems to impact cognition and give you tips regarding what you can do about it.

What’s the Buzzzzzz About Tinnitus?|
People describe tinnitus as a ringing sound, a buzz, “crickets”….we even have one patient who tells us her tinnitus sounds like Christmas carols! Too many people have been told there is nothing that can be done or to just “get used to it.” We disagree! We’ll talk about the causes of tinnitus and ways you can successfully manage those annoying sounds in your ears.

I’m Confused!  What’s the Best Hearing Aid?
Well, we would like to reframe that question. The best question is, “What’s the best hearing aid for me?” There are many hearing aid options out there and it is the job or your hearing health professional to help you find the right match for your needs.  Hearing aids are not a one-size-fits all and you don’t have to figure it out on your own. We’ll talk about some of the “cool new” hearing aid technologies available now.  But most important, we will help you know the right questions to ask so you can get the best hearing help possible where you live.

Hearing the Call at Home and Abroad
We call them “hearing smiles” and we have had the great fortune to travel around the world to underserved countries providing audiologic care. From the 80-year-old woman in Mozambique who broke into dance when we fit her husband with hearing aids to the woman in Guatemala who burst into tears of joy when she heard a motorcycle drive by the clinic (ask us why!)…their smiles have changed us. We have shared in the joy of people living in poverty whose lives were transformed after receiving the gift of hearing. Their stories will warm your heart.

Jane Baxter, Au.D. (left)  and Deborah Clark, Au.D. are co-owners of Pacific Hearing Service, a private audiology practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. They are also co-founders of Pacific Hearing Connection, a nonprofit audiology clinic with the mission of serving low-income hearing-impaired people in the Bay Area. In addition to their local nonprofit work, they are charter members of Entheos Audiology Cooperative and travel to underserved places around the world such as Guatemala, Jordan and Africa with a team of audiologists providing care to hearing impaired people. Together they were awarded the Leo Doerfler award by the Academy of Doctors of Audiology for outstanding service in their community throughout their careers.

Dr. Baxter began her career educating deaf children before she decided to go back to school and become an audiologist. She worked in clinical audiology at Stanford University prior to joining Pacific Hearing Service. Dr. Clark also has a background in academics having worked at Vanderbilt University and The University of Washington before joining Dr. Baxter in private practice. They are proud to say their clinic has been serving people in the Bay Area for 45 years and has a reputation for providing gold-standard care.

I Can’t Draw and You Can’t Too!

I have a secret to tell you. Right now, you already have all the skills you need to make sketching a satisfying life-long practice. Join me to see for yourself the habits you can develop that will make this practice an on-going part of your life. You’ll find that a drawing practice does more than fill scrap paper and sketch books with random images. It will give you a method to see things in a new way, and a habit of being more present to your surroundings. Like a puzzle, a game, or sports, sketching keeps you grounded in the here and now. It is a practice that will enhance mindfulness and attention…and it might even improve your drawing skills. Let’s learn some simple sketch exercises that are all you need to begin a lifetime of drawing enjoyment and satisfaction.

Finding a Way in / Finding a Way Out – Let’s learn to see together, let’s learn how to find a way into interpreting what we see through the language of sketch. There are so many ways to get started, we’ll try a few, and you’ll begin to find what works for you.

Portrait Roulette – For most of us there is nothing more intimidating than drawing another person. Let’s throw caution to the wind, pick up our pencils and take our new found skills of observation for a spin. We’ll take turns quick-sketching one another and see how satisfying it is to capture people on paper.

Fifty Shades of Green – Pine trees, Pepper trees, Azaleas, Olives, Avocados, Weeping Willows and a fresh cut lawn. They are all green! How can we use a limited palette of paints to respond to the greens we see and build a symphony of green. Starting with blue and yellow, and even muting it with a bit of red, you’ll discover just how beautiful an array of greens can be.

Only You Have Your Point of View – Learning to find satisfaction in sketching means learning to see the world in a different way. Today we’ll explore elements of composition and point of view. We’ll learn to eliminate distractions and how to place the point of interest on our paper. You’ll see how changing your view point, even just a little, can greatly enhance your sketching experience.

Putting It All Together – Now that we’ve gotten our feet wet, let’s take sketch to a new level. Using line and color we’ll compose a study from nature. We’ll look at simplifying the complex world and narrowing our point of view so that we can create a color sketch that captures a moment in time and renders it as a keepsake.

Tom Birmingham is an artist and photographer living and working in Big Sur, California. After years of being intimidated by the perceived rigor of developing drawing skills, he embarked on a sketch practice that immediately brought satisfaction and enhanced his experiences in his travels and his daily life. Tom is a founder of the Peninsula Sketchers in Monterey, California. He teaches line and watercolor sketch around the country and on his annual Italian sketch tours. For thirty years, Tom has taught creative expression in photography, theater, and visual arts to artists and novices, adults and children around the world.

Pickleball with Roger BelAir

If you haven’t heard of pickleball, you soon will. It’s the fastest growing sport in America. The game is easy to learn, great exercise, and incredibly fun. It’s especially popular with active people over forty since it’s easy on the joints. Many people expect pickleball to be the premier participation sport of the future.

Pickleball is a combination of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton. It’s often called “Ping pong on steroids.”  The game was created near Seattle when kids going out to play badminton couldn’t find the birdies. However, they did find the net, a wiffle ball, and some ping pong paddles. A new game was born. In one 45-minute session you’ll learn the basics of the game, get exercise, and—most importantly—have fun!

Inspired by a CBS’s “60 Minutes” segment on crime, Roger envisioned pickleball as a means of teaching “life skills” in prisons.“96% of all inmates are eventually released. If we can make them better while they are on the inside, it’s safer for all of us once they are back on the outside. Today’s inmate is tomorrow’s neighbor.” he says.

Roger BelAir introduced the game to men charged with murder at Chicago’s Cook County Jail. “There is a magical quality about the game,” he says. “We learned gang members who wouldn’t even talk to each other, would be willing to play pickleball together. Soon they were laughing together.”

His successful program in Chicago led Roger to teaching at prisons from coast to coast, from Rikers Island in New York to Corcoran in California where Charles Manson served time.  His life-changing effort have been applauded in the media from NPR to a front page story in USA TODAY.

Off the court, Roger is a financial expert who has been profiled in a cover story of Money magazine; an acclaimed author of books on finance and investments; and a keynoter at business conventions. He’s been quoted in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and many other publications.

He knows finance, but pickleball is his passion.
