Nourishing Your Health with Integrative Medicine

Unwinding Anxiety
One in five people in the US experience anxiety each year. While pharmaceutical approaches can be helpful, they are most effective and safest when reserved for short term use. A large body of evidence supports nonpharmacological therapies including – breathing practices, botanicals, vagus nerve stimulators, exercise, nutrition, and mind-body practices. In this engaging presentation, Dr. Victoria Maizes will reframe the experience of anxiety, review new scientific discoveries, and teach non-pharmacological strategies to manage anxious feelings when they arise.

Nourishing Your Health by Living Green
Modern life exposes us to chemicals that may be subtly or profoundly impacting our health. We absorb toxins in the food we eat, the beverages we drink, the products we put on our skin, and the cleansers we use in and around our homes. Mounting evidence links environmental toxins to developmental disorders, obesity, heart disease, and cancer. Dr. Victoria Maizes addresses the evidence for harm, practical steps we can all take to reduce exposures, and the multitude of resources that can help nourish our own health and that of future generations.

Vibrantly Healthy Women
Questions about women’s health and well-being frequently arise in an integrative health practice. Whether it is concern about changes coinciding with menopause, hormones, sexuality, healthy bones, or weight loss, Dr. Victoria Maizes, an internationally recognized women’s health expert will address the science that supports women in their efforts to live vibrantly healthy lives.

Dr. Victoria Maizes is the Founding Executive Director of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine and is a Professor of Medicine, Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Arizona. Internationally recognized as a leader in integrative medicine, Dr. Maizes is committed to helping individuals live healthier lives and pioneering change efforts that solve health care system problems. Planting the Roots of Peace, Restoring Soil and Soul

Today, more than 50 countries worldwide are contaminated by landmines and explosive remnants of war, rendering the land where they lay hidden completely unusable. Landmines kill or injure more than 5,000 people each year, about half of them children. There is a strong correlation between the most marginalized and food-insecure communities and contamination with landmines and unexploded ordnance. Kühn works in these afflicted areas to help those most in need, freeing the land that is held hostage to destructive weapons of war.

“Our mission is to bring opportunity and hope to local populations that once could not walk across their fields for fear of losing a limb or life to these hidden killers which lurk beneath the trusted land. By planting the roots of peace, we restore both the soil and soul, and give rural farmers a chance to build a livelihood, to feed their children and to grow,” said Kühn.

With conflicts proliferating in so many parts of the world, war is a growing threat to farming and food security. An increasing number of nations have found it necessary to confront the daunting challenge of rebuilding food systems, livelihoods and communities after conflict. Kühn’s work transforming “mines to vines” shows the world the vital role agriculture must have in the resilient recovery from conflict and restoration of peace.

Heidi Kühn is the Founder and CEO of Roots of Peace. She founded the humanitarian non-profit organization with a vision of turning Mines to Vines. After winning her own battle with cancer, Kühn was inspired to remove an insidious ‘cancer of the earth’—replacing remnants of war with bountiful farmland worldwide.  For more than a decade, she has shown millions of people living in war-torn regions around the world a way forward for restoring peace and prosperity through agriculture.

Heidi Kühn has received multiple awards. Most recently, she was named the 2023 World Food Prize Laureate. She was also given the 2023 Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice by the Harmony Foundation. Previously, she was named University of California at Berkeley Alumni of the Year Award in 2002 for Excellence in Achievement. In 2003 she was inducted into the Marin County Women’s Hall of Fame.  In 2005 she was awarded the World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations Peace & Security Award. In 2006 she received the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. In 2007, she was bestowed the Jefferson Award and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award for Outstanding Public Service– the foremost award for American changemakers. In 2019, Heidi was the first American woman to win the Mahatma Gandhi Global Family Seva Medal in India. She is the proud recipient of the International Women’s Forum (IWF) Making a Difference Award and was honored as one of IWF’s “Ideas Remaking the World” honorees in 2020. In 2021, Heidi’s visionary leadership was acknowledged with her inclusion in the inaugural Forbes 50 Over 50 “Women Who Are Leading the Way in Impact” List. In November 2022, Heidi was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the American University of Afghanistan at a dinner hosted by former First Ladies Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton. In 2023, Heidi was appointed to the Advisory Council of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife & Cultural Heritage.

Artists enjoy painting in the “golden hour” because everything becomes progressively more interesting and exciting as shadows lengthen. This is a unique opportunity to study with two accomplished and warmhearted artist-educators at the same time. Ken and Stephanie are both well known for their ability to help each person find their own individual drawing and painting abilities

Happy Healthy Brain

Happy Healthy Brain
Want to keep your brain happy and healthy for a good long time? Cognitive decline doesn’t have to be inevitable. Come learn why it is important to make your brain a top priority. We’ll talk about what drains your brain, and what to do to support it.

Lifestyle Factors to Minimize the Risk of Cognitive Decline
We’ll discuss food and community – what we eat and how we live. Learn what foods to add in your daily diet, and which ones to take out.

Lifestyle Factors to Minimize the Risk of Cognitive Decline
We’ll discuss ways to maximize and optimize exercise, stress management, sleep, and continued brain and engagement and lifelong learning.

Workshop to Keep Your Brain Happy and Healthy
We’ll do a self-assessment to see where you are now, and create an action plan to incorporate what you have learned this week. Wellness is based on a system of small routines…what you do every day is more impactful than what you do once in a while. Let’s establish a pattern for wellness.

Jean Courtney is a researcher, writer, entrepreneur, and perpetual learner on a mission to make every day wellness easy and efficient. Jean was a legal investigator at a fast-paced law firm, which provided a front row seat to watching the detrimental effects of stress on health.  She made the conscious choice for time and health over a salary, retiring at an early age and using her research skills to study ways to optimize health. When her mom got dementia, it blew her family apart. Jean shifted her focus to learning everything possible to try and avoid the dementia that found her mom and kept her hostage for six long years. Jean was not only an advocate for her mother, she was immersed in researching what she herself could do to minimize risk of the same fate. She has travelled the world extensively (including some time in the Blue Zones) with much of the focus being on health and longevity through lifestyle. She often lectures and teaches cooking classes and shares easy, efficient and delicious ways to cook using neuroprotective ingredients, with an emphasis on minimizing inflammation and maximizing brain function. She will help you understand the why behind making healthy choices for your brain and body.   She is passionate about helping people understand how important brain health is and helping them experience life-long health, vitality and vibrance. She recently completed a Soil to Table certification program living at Tres Estrellas organic farm focused on learning and practicing regenerative farming techniques.  She is a firm believer that your DNA is not always your destiny – your dinner plate can be your destiny.
