Inner Fitness: Your Way to Wellness

Marianne Wells invites you to participate in an interesting, fun and light-hearted lecture series that re- writes the narrative of well-being, and shows you step by step how to reclaim your wellness. You are welcome to attend one or all five talks, whatever fits best into your schedule, on Your Way to Wellness!

Your Way to Wellness
The key to living your best life begins with the mind and how we perceive ourselves in the world around us. This discussion is designed to help you on your journey of positive transformation – regardless of your stage of life, personal views, or your emotional state. For many of us, we can simply improve our wellness based on a renewed way of observing who we are. We will explore unique ways to Inner Fitness, giving you tools to help with acceptance of where you are in life, and how to move forward toward better wellness. Our role as authors of our own wellness is to keep our Life Force strong. In yoga, we call this “breath of life.” In ayurveda, we call this “energetic conscious intelligence.” We will discuss these principles and how you can start your own personal journey. You will learn how to bring balance in your life- style, diet, and daily routine based on your needs and wants, as well as reconnect with a greater sense of purpose and inspiration in your life.

Loving Your Way to Wellness
Love is the essence of life. Learning to love yourself is key to living your best life. Loving wellness means knowing how to love more inwardly to enhance your ability to love more outwardly. As Sadhguru states – “nourish the root, not the fruit.” In the yogic tradition, the five koshas (physical, emotional, mental, intellectual, spiritual) are a way to explain how we exist –- from the physical layer to ever more subtle, yet more meaningful, layers of existence. We are an indistinguishable spectrum of existence, with each aspect of our being nourishing the others in a back-and-forth flow between the physical and the spiritual realms. In this talk, Marianne will guide you through the koshas so that you can experience the different aspects of your being. Learn and master the practices that bring a wholeness into living your best life.

Eating Your Way to Wellness
Food is medicine. With all the concepts on healthy eating that arise from time to time in our society, there is one that remains true – “We become what we eat!” The key to sustained nourishment that sup- ports our well-being begins with two essential skills to help us thrive in balanced / delicious living: (1)knowing which foods to eat (which to avoid), and how to combine foods in such a way that our appetite and individual nutritional needs are met, and; (2)reducing or eliminating emotional food cravings. Discover for yourself the very best ways to keep yourself full of “aliveness.”

Moving Your Way to Wellness
The human body was made to move. Our desires plant the spark that initiates movement – you have to want before you get. But one can become imbalanced in this drive to reach satisfaction to the detriment of our health and relationships. Knowing your Ayurvedic dosha type and fundamental tendencies will help you understand the types of activities (and when to do them) that will bring better health and harmony to your life and improve your relationships. We begin with an understanding of your lifestyle and what your body needs to bring it the best possible results in wellness for your age and circumstances. Join Marianne for an enlightening exploration of Ayurveda.

Sleeping Your Way to Wellness
Learn to be great in bed. While there are many ways to enhance your time under the covers, getting to the reasons why bedtime is not sleep time is the very best thing you can do for well-being. A good night’s rest depends on how we spent our day, and what we anticipate will happen in the coming days. This talk will help you understand how to navigate between over-activity (overdoing, worry) and inactivity (lethargy, grief ) to be in a peaceful and restful state where sleep can be easily attained. We will explore the ancient concept of the gunas from Samkhya philosophy. The three gunas are present in every person, and in everything in this world – even thoughts. It is the proportion between the three that dictates the differences in people and the things around us. From a personality or psychological perspective, under- standing the gunas helps us understand our tendencies. Furthermore, recognizing your current state of mind and the states of others, will provide you with powerful tools to bring more peace into your life.

Gathering Guru: How to Come Together with Passion, Purpose, and Power

What Facilitating a Wedding, a Funeral, a Bat Mitzvah, and a Board Meeting Have in Common
We spend much of our lives gathering with others, but too often these experiences make poor use of our time. Sometimes we meet professionally, with staff, boards, or others in our fields of interest; at other times we meet with family and friends to mark rituals of passage and celebration. Whatever their setting, crafting gatherings rich in purpose takes intention and skill. Engaging in them fully takes a similar intention. Join foundation and nonprofit strategy consultant Melinda Fine, Ed.D. to explore five ingredients essential to designing and engaging in gatherings that are powerful and meaningful for participants, setting the stage for more fulfilling experiences in the future.

“Why the heck are we meeting, anyway?”
Accessible and useful for those who design, lead, or simply participate in gatherings in a professional or volunteer context, this session will explore how to participate in forums that challenge both the head and the heart. We will cover strategies to foster goal definition, framing work expectations, and collective sense-making. We will also problem-solve common challenges, such as people moving at different paces, holding different perspectives, and gravitating toward challenges rather than assets. Through individual reflection, group dialogue, and work sheets, participants will identify characteristics that have contributed to successful as well as unsuccessful gathering experiences in the past, and what they might plan to execute in the future.

“If You Can’t Think of Anything Nice to Say …”
This session focuses on what lies beneath the surface in gathering design and execution – including the strengths (and potential inhibitions) we bring with us into spaces where we gather. We will consider planning for submerged dynamics (such as power differentials and hot-button issues) and unpack the “choreography” of a meeting’s arc, mindful of the ebb and flow of participants’ energy and the time it takes to build community and foster candor. Through individual reflection, group dialogue, and worksheets, we will also explore how participants can build on their personal strengths when facilitating or simply joining in collective forums.

Taming the Middle Schooler Among Us
This final session explores what it takes to ensure productive and inclusive engagement among diverse gatherers. We will problem-solve when events go off the rails, identifying common disrupters — the backseater, the nay-sayer, the interrupter, the middle schooler, and more. To foster skills in building consensus in the conference room (and around the family dinner table), we will name dragons to slay, questions to consider, and tools to tap. Through individual reflection, group dialogue, and worksheets, participants will leave having committed to one concept, approach, or tool they will try out in a future gathering after their time at the Ranch.

Melinda Fine, Ed.D., Founder and Principal of FINE Consulting, is a seasoned strategy consultant and executive coach who has partnered with leaders, nonprofits, and foundations of all shapes and sizes for over three decades. Giving to Enrich Your Life

In four participative sessions learn more about your own charitable motivations. Clarify what inspires you and focus the impact you and your family can have through giving and service in your communities.

What’s Your Philanthropic IQ?
What is philanthropy anyway, and why should you care? It’s not how much you give, but your impact that matters. Do you know why you give and the best ways to select the organizations you support? What’s going on in philanthropy in the US and the world? Come with questions and leave with a personal philanthropic mission. (In subsequent sessions you can draft your personal/family giving plan.)

From Donor to Philanthropist in One Simple Step
A gift is a transaction that makes you a donor. Philanthropy is a way of life and a lifetime of giving. Reviewing all our family giving was a revelation. We realized that we wanted to focus on giving outcomes rather than individual gifts. So, we drafted our own philanthropic plan that enabled us to have more effect over a broader span of time. It has also provided opportunity to plan for those special stretch gifts. Try it. You might like it!

Teach Your Children to Love Giving
Do you remember your first act of philanthropy? How old were you? What inspired you in that moment? Do the young people in your life know the joy and value of sharing abundance with others?  What are some steps you can take to help your loved ones enhance their lives through expanding their compassion for their neighbors? As you plant the seeds of a culture of philanthropy in your circles, imagine the multiplier effect of all the giving you might engender in coming generations.

Make a Difference
Getting to know our communities, the recurring needs, and participating with the organizations that strive to meet those needs helps keep our brains and hearts fit and lively. Assessing ways we can be of value is a noble pursuit that can begin at any age and ebbs and flows with your life abilities. Through selected examples, we will review many aspects of philanthropic involvement, how our strengths and the expectations of community organizations may or may not mesh well, and what to do about it.

Don’t let lack of knowledge or experience stand in the way. You can make a difference!

Jane Scheidecker, MBA, CFRE (retired), began her fundraising career as Associate Dean for Development at the University of Oregon. This work came after hoeing sugar beets, loading heavy petroleum products in railcars, playing clarinet and oboe in woodwind quintets, roofing houses, and teaching Spanish, French, and English to college and high school students, among other work and play. Through the years, Jane learned to relate to and learn from people in all walks of life.

She spent 30 years uncovering donor passions to support projects while bringing joy to the giver and the recipient. She created fundraising teams, led capital campaigns, raised endowments, and opened philanthropic doors for universities, community colleges, and other non-profits supporting donors’ impacts in a variety of worlds that were important to them.

“I hate to beg for money. I would rather walk over cut glass barefoot,” people would say when Jane would tell them she was a professional fundraiser. But her focus was not begging. The questions Jane asked were, “Do you want to leave the world a better place? What are your hopes for your children and nieces and nephews and grandchildren and godchildren? How can each of us help create the world we envision to bring joy and abundance to all?” Revealing the answers has been a labor of love.

Jane’s interactive workshops at Rancho La Puerta will help you find that joy and create a plan for involving your families so coming generations will value, understand, and delight in their philanthropic options and the impact they can have in communities that matter to them.

That brief exposure to conducting led to fully staged performances of Magic Flute, Cendrillon and L’ enfant et les sortileges, with Ravel’s masterpiece ending up being one of the most challenging but also artistically memorable experiences in his career. Before moving to the U.S., Dimitri was residing in Ireland enjoying a flourishing career with engagements in some of the country’s most prestigious venues and festivals, while completing his Doctorate in Music Performance. A native of Greece, Dimitri at age sixteen won first prize at the international chamber music competition Classical Heritage of Moscow, and has performed Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini with the Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra and Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto with the Athens State Orchestra.   A graduate of Indiana University and the Royal Irish Academy of Music, he has participated in a plethora of festivals throughout Europe and the U.S.

Embracing a Sensational Life

Embracing a Sensational Life
The traditional five physical senses of smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing are how humans interact with the world around them. Find the Way to Your Best Sleep Ever

Insomnia Treatment: Medication Isn’t the Only Answer!
Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line recommended treatment for insomnia, ahead of medication. This talk will introduce key concepts to behavioral treatment for insomnia, from creating the ideal bedroom environment to finding the right bedtime/wake time intervals for sleep consolidation, and when medication may be necessary.

Why is Sleep Important and How Do I know if I Have a Sleep Disorder?
We are a chronically sleep-deprived world. As more and more demands take up our time, sleep becomes less and less of a priority for far too many people. In this course, we will discuss why sleep is essential to our overall well-being. In addition, common sleep issues will be discussed to help you understand whether further evaluation for a sleep disorder is necessary. Differences between men and women’s sleep – throughout the lifespan – will also be addressed in detail.

Stress Reduction to Quiet the Nighttime Brain
We are an overstimulated society, and with more demands comes a greater challenge to quiet the brain at bedtime to allow sleep to come. Mindfulness meditation has been increasingly incorporated into insomnia programs, helping to dim the brain at night and prepare for sleep. Cognitive and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy strategies for the busy brain will also be introduced. Simple mindfulness meditation exercises will be discussed and practiced, and ways to use mindfulness appropriately to help enhance sleep will be reviewed. Stress reduction techniques will also be reviewed in detail to help reduce the mental load that so many of us bring to bed at night.

Couple’s Sleep Issues / Ask the Sleep Doc Anything!
The field of sleep medicine is starting to really think about couples in terms of sleep. What are common sleep and relationship issues that come up with people sharing a bed? What are some treatment strategies so both partners can get a good night’s sleep? When is it time to sleep apart? We’ll combine this talk with an “Ask the Sleep Doc Anything” so you can better figure out what to do to improve your sleep when you return home.

How Many Mondays Do You Have Left?

How Many Mondays Do You Have Left?
The practice of memento mori—acting on the Latin phrase that translates to “remember we must die,” has the profound potential to wake us up and breathe more life into our lives. While focusing on the end of our days may sound more morbid than meaningful, the contemplation of death allows us to appreciate the scarcity of the very time we’re looking to make the most of.
In this interactive workshop rooted in the science of positive psychology, we’ll talk about how we can be more mindful about living the lives we’d love to live, and actually start living those lives… today, without a Monday to spare.

Widening and Deepening Your Life with Vitality and Meaning
In a world consumed with expanding the length of our lives, cultivating a more intimate familiarity with our mortality can help us expand the metaphoric width and depth of our lives as well. We make our lives wider when we fill them with vitality and gusto—expanding the breadth of the pleasurable experiences that life has to offer while blasting us out of our autopilot tendencies. We make our lives deeper when we infuse them with meaning and purpose—elevating ourselves out of empty or mundane existences into lives that feel like they matter. In this workshop we will action-plan your ways to live wider and deeper. 7 8 24 Living Wider and Deeper

Living a Regret-Free Life
Regrets have a bad reputation, don’t they? No one wants to get to the end of their lives with a litany of “coulda, shoulda, woulda” woes. In this workshop we’ll delve into insightful research that shows how regrets can actually motivate us to change our behavior and better the circumstances of our lives. Let’s leverage our priorities and shape our remaining days to align with what we now see really matters in our lives. We’ll get reflective and contemplate our own paths not taken, and identify specific action steps to course-correct our regrets-in-the-making … to help us wake up to the lives we really want to be living. 7 9 24 Regrets Webinar Worksheets

What Kind of Legacy Do You Want to Leave Behind?
This workshop provides an inspirational, action-oriented approach to showing up as the kind of person whose impact resonates and influences long after you’re gone. You’ll get strategic about your deeply held values and long-term vision that will outlast you after you’ve left your team/ business/ family/ whatever environment matters to you. We’ll use your mortality as a motivator to live AND lead your choices with intention. We’ll get you zeroing in on the fact that you won’t live forever—and we’ll use that crucial awareness as the spark plugs to start living and leaving a conscious impact behind you. 7 10 24 Legacy Worksheets

Well-Being That Actually Works
This workshop is like an immersion course in all things well-being—with the answers to the test on how to live a life well-lived. You’ll assess your current state of flourishing (or floundering), identify your personal well-being gaps + traps, learn about the latest research-worthy hacks to live life well, and walk away with deliberate steps to live on purpose. This is perfect if you’re looking for a paint-by-numbers approach to participating more fully in your life… to ultimately increase life satisfaction, productivity, and results. 7 11 24 Well-being that Actually Works
