Executive Chef Reyna Venegas prepares fresh and delicious food that energizes, inspires, and nourishes guests. She fuses the culinary and cultural heritages of her own Northern Baja roots with the nutritious “spa cuisine” pioneered 80 years ago by Rancho La Puerta co-founder Deborah Szekely. At La Cocina Que Canta, “The Kitchen That Sings,” Chef Reyna teaches healthy eating as a celebration of life in farm-to-table cooking classes.

As a lifelong learner, Chef Reyna graduated from University of California, San Diego’s Integrative Nutrition program, which focuses on how food promotes wellness. She is also a graduate of the Culinary Art School in Tijuana, and holds a Pastry Degree from the Lycée Technique et Hôtelier de Monte-Carlo and Fondation Turquois.

She and her husband Chef Marcelo Hisaki own Restaurante Amores, a hidden culinary jewel in the heart of Baja and currently collaborates as manager of Team Mexico on their way to the Bocuse d’Or Americas 2024.

Romney Steele is a cook and the author of My Nepenthe: Bohemian Tales of Food, Family and Big Sur​ (2009, anniversary edition 2019) and ​Plum Gorgeous, Recipes and Memories of Living in a Big Sur Orchard​ (2011). She is also the chef and co-owner of The Cook and Her Farmer, a cafe, oyster and wine bar nestled inside the historic Swan’s Market, in Old Oakland, Ca. She grew up at the legendary Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur, started by her grandparents in 1947, where she opened Cafe Kevah, and later became the pastry chef at the renowned Sierra Mar Restaurant at Post Ranch Inn. She has since authored recipes and articles for numerous food magazines, worked as a chef and food stylist, and currently runs her own kitchen and manages the business in Oakland. Part of the mission at The Cook and Her Farmer is to nurture the growth and development of young cooks and farmers; she works closely with local farms and the surrounding community and strives to bring a sense of beauty and place into her work on a daily basis.

Romney brings an artist’s sensibility to her cooking and teaching, encouraging students to come with an open mind and belief that anyone can cook. Drawing on her love of cooking from the garden, and a deep attachment to culture and place as inspiration, she invites everyone to join her at the table.

She is the founder of The Health Institute of Nutrition — a private practice, an active member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and on staff at Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute in La Jolla, California.

Jodie is recognized for her work in Women’s Health and Sustainable Weight Loss Nutrition. She has served as a weeklyguest expert at various Wall Street Corporations and NYC Health Clubs and as a college adjunct professor. Duo Jazz Magic

Saxophonist/flutist/vocalist Kristen Strom and guitarist Scott Sorkin have been married and playing together for many years.  For these RLP concerts, they will present music from their unique and varied repertoire.

 

Kristen Strom has played alongside many well-known artists, including Manhattan Transfer, Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, Roberta Flack, Johnny Mathis, Jimmy Heath, Pamela Rose, and the touring company of Blues is a Woman. She also performs in a celebrated duo with husband/guitarist Scott Sorkin. In addition to her albums, Intention, Sojourn and Moving Day: The Music of John Shifflett, she has recorded more than 40 CDs with various jazz and pop artists. Her latest album, Moving Day, was listed as one of Best Jazz Albums of 2018 by The Mercury News and has gotten national and international airplay.

 

Scott Sorkin is a Bay Area guitarist, composer, producer, teacher and recording engineer who performs and records in styles ranging from jazz to Brazilian and Latin styles. His solo CD “Laika” was released in 2017. Performance credits include the Count Basie Orchestra, Mary Wilson (The Supremes), Nneenna Freelon, Paula West, Louie Bellson, Vince Giordano, Tammy Hall, Pamela Rose, Kristen Strom, touring shows “Dream Girls” and Disney’s “Newsies”, Symphony Silicon Valley, Great Performances, PBS Television and SFJAZZ. Sorkin has extensive recording credits as well as film scores (including composer credits). Scott co-leads the international jazz group “Crossing Borders”, featuring Kristen Strom, Jennifer Scott, and Rene Worst. He’s been a featured artist at many festivals.

Violin Concert with Pei-Chun Tsai and Ariana Kim

Pei-Chun Tsai, from Tainan, Taiwan, is two-time first-prize winner of the Taiwan National Violin Competition. She has performed in Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and the National Concert Hall in Taiwan. Pei-Chun has participated in many music festivals in the United States and Europe. After receiving Bachelor and Master’s degrees in violin performance from The Juilliard School, she completed her Doctorate in Musical Arts from the City University of New York.         Pei-Chun is the founder and director of the Campanile Music Festival at San Diego State University where she curates innovative residencies of visiting artists from across the country. Recent guests include the Formosa Quartet and Brooklyn Rider. Pei-Chun has been a member of the San Diego Symphony since 2006. As a violin lecturer at San Diego State University, Pei-Chun performs with the San Diego State University Chamber orchestra regularly. She has recently released her solo violin album “Chaconnes” which you can find on Apple Music or Spotify.

Noted by The New York Times for giving “the proceedings an invaluable central thread of integrity and stylishness” and having “played with soulful flair,” violinist Ariana Kim made her New York recital debut at Carnegie’s Weill Hall during her graduate studies at Juilliard and is now a tenured professor at Cornell University.  Together with the Aizuri Quartet, she was awarded the Gold Medal at the 2017 Osaka International Competition, the 2018 M-Prize, and a 2019 GRAMMY® nomination for their debut album, Blueprinting.  At 16, Ariana made her debut with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and at 24 was appointed acting concertmaster of the Louisiana Philharmonic in New Orleans and has since become one of the most respected artists of her generation.

A recipient of a Cornell University Affinito-Stewart Faculty Grant and a Society for the Humanities Grant, Ariana released her first solo album Routes of Evanescence in December of 2015. While on sabbatic leave from Cornell in 2016, Ariana lived and worked in Italy, teaching at l’Istituto Stradivari, performing with Milano Classica, and curating a cultural diplomacy public art project involving the Cornell Composition Department, the Cornell Architecture Department, and a group of North African and Mid-East refugees.  She performed two solo recital tours in Northern and Central Italy featuring works from J.S. Bach to Elliott Carter to bluegrass fiddle tunes; she is set to return to her “home away from home” this coming summer for a solo appearance with Milano Classica at the Paesaggi Musicali Toscani – a festival for which she became the newly appointed Co-Artistic Director in August 2019.

Ariana received her masters and doctorate from the Juilliard School under the tutelage of the late Robert Mann, her undergraduate degree from the San Francisco Conservatory with Ian Swensen and Camilla Wicks, and usually co-resides in Ithaca and New York City.  During the 2021 calendar year, she lived and worked in Seoul, South Korea studying ancient traditional Korean instruments and music, teaching as a visiting artist at Seoul National University, and rock-climbing many mountains.

Amy Carstensen, a San Diego based Professional Organizer, started her business “Organizing  with Amy” in 2013.  Previously, she’s taught high school Spanish, worked for the International Community Foundation and was the Founder and Executive Director of Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center. While Amy holds a Master’s degree from UCSD in International Relations, her true passion is helping people declutter their brains and their lives.  When she’s not donating kitchen items to Salvation Army or putting labels on bins, she’s home torturing her husband and two teenage boys reminding them that, “if you can’t find something… just start cleaning up!”

Karl Anthony is an award-winning singer/songwriter and a proud member of NOAH (National Organization of Arts in Health), dedicated to advocating for the healing power of music in healthcare. For nearly twenty years, he has served as a healing arts professional at the San Diego Rady Children’s Hospital, infusing his work and music with a message of hope for children and families.

Leading drum circles in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services (CAPS) at the hospital as a REMO Certified Health Rhythms Facilitator, Anthony promotes the scientifically researched benefits of community drumming as a tool for equalizing and building communities.

Each year, Karl and his wife Noi lead travel service trips to Thailand, where they have a home and reside part of the year. These trips support musical instruments for local schools and orphanages.

Karl has forged his own unique path in the music industry, earning multiple Gandhi/King Season for Non-Violence Peace Hero awards for his innovative art-focused wellness programs, music performances, and humanitarian efforts. Through his music, Karl Anthony opens doors to connect with people and shares his passion for the healing potential of music.

Join Alex and your fellow chess enthusiasts nightly from Sunday through Wednesday at 7pm for social games, to learn/play chess variants like “Hand and Brain” or “Bughouse,” and/or participate in chess lessons for those who wish!

Family: Great Chess Games Played by the Masters
Join chess coach Alex Freuman for a glimpse into the artistry of some of the greatest chess masters of all time. We will review 2-3 classic games and analyze the moves that resulted in each masterpiece. Participants will develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of chess strategy and tactics.

Teens and Adults: Juggling
Join Alex to learn the basics of 3 ball juggling; those with basic knowledge of juggling will learn more advanced skills (one up, 2 down; passing…)

Family: Daily Brain Games
Put on your thinking caps and stop by the Lounge every morning to pick up a fresh-baked daily puzzle designed to tickle your brain and keep your mental fitness sharp! There will be puzzles suited for all ages!

 

Alex Freuman, MS, BA,  is a high school STEM teacher who holds a BA in mathematics from Oberlin College and an MS in mathematics education from Hunter College in New York City.   At Oberlin, Alex was a founding member of the Juggling Club, where he honed many circus skills, including fire juggling, fire eating and balancing tricks. Also, a long-time chess and puzzle enthusiast, Alex coaches the chess team at Nyack Highschool (Nyack, NY), is faculty advisor for the Nyack Highschool Puzzle Club, is the founder and President of the Rockland County Chess Club, and is a certified US Chess Tournament Director.  His current United States Chess Federation (UCSF) rating is 1900, and he hopes to break 2000 before his children beat him to it. Alex is passionate about creating community and fostering multi-generational connections through the joy of chess.

An extravaganza of four-hand piano music celebrating composers from around the world and the places and experiences that inspired them, with DUO MUNDI GEORGE & GULI

Duo Mundi George & Guli thrills audiences around the world with their exciting, innovative, diverse, and intimate programming style. They explore music for both one piano four hands and two piano four hands in the standard and contemporary repertoire as well as commissioned new works by national and international composers. Lauded as “…breathing the same artistic air…” with an adrenaline of communication that captivates audiences of every generation, Duo Mundi George & Guli creates beautifully synchronized performances that engage both the eye and ear in a dance of emotions. Since their inception in 2018, Duo Mundi G&G have given standing room only performances of Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story for the centenary celebration of the composer’s birth and their two-piano program “Immigration and Opportunity” with works by composers inspired by or writing in foreign lands. Recently they were invited to perform and give master classes throughout the US including venues in New York City, Kansas, Colorado, California, Texas, Florida, and Oklahoma. In their 2022-2023 concert season, they performed in Mexico and premiered their four-hand arrangement of Chinese composer Shi Fu’s Tajik Drum Dance at the 44th International European Piano Teachers Association Conference in Portugal. Their upcoming recording projects include Music of the Americas, music written for and/or inspired by children, and a series of newly commissioned and rarely performed works. Duo Mundi G&G have an exciting 2023-2024 concert season with upcoming performances and tours in    New England, the Northwest, Florida, North Carolina, the Bay Area, Colorado, Texas, and Mexico. They gave their New York City recital debut at Steinway Hall on April 1, 2023 and hope to complete their 2020 tour of China which was interrupted by the pandemic in 2024.

Known for his “…kaleidoscopic colors and clarity of conception…” (LA Times) in the standard repertoire as well as being a champion of newly written works, his debut at the renowned Concertgebouw in Amsterdam was lauded as “… authentic and memorable …” by the Nederlands Dagblad for his interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations along with all Twenty-Four Preludes of Chopin. He performed worldwide as a soloist in major cities throughout Europe, Australia, Japan, Mexico, Central and South America.  George’s extensive performances covers most major U.S. cities, including New York’s Lincoln Center, Merkin Hall, and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie, Paul Hall at the Juilliard School, Benaroya Hall in Seattle, Ambassador Hall in Los Angeles, the Shao Lin Arts Center in Rockport (Massachusetts), The Cleveland Art Museum, Harvard University, and Tanglewood, After his performance at Lincoln Center the composer Lowell Liebermann described the performance of his work as “…exciting and decisive!” A featured soloist at many international music festivals throughout Europe and abroad, Mr. Lopez performed at the renowned Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Girona Internacional Festival de Musica in Spain, the Kowmung Festival just outside Sydney, Festivale d’Internazionale Solisti e Musica da Camera in Umbria (Italy), and the renowned Latin-American music festival Cubadisco in Havana (Cuba). Gulimina Mahamuti is the first Uyghur from China to receive a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the U.S. She made her Carnegie debut in New York City at Weill Recital Hall and has performed internationally in Montreal, Copenhagen, Istanbul, Budapest (at the invitation of the Turkish Ambassador), and across the U.S. and China, broadcasting on these nations’ radio and TV programs. She has performed piano concerti with the Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra, Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, and Harbin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, and was featured on the radio in San Francisco, Queens College/CUNY podcast, China Touch Radio, and Istanbul Technical University Radio.

Pamela Smilow’s presentation is about the unconventional way she has made art her way of life: her evolution as an artist and the circumstances, including growing up in a very unique Frank Lloyd Wright cooperative community, that have shaped her into the person she is today. Her talk will include many colorful slides of her art and the innovative architecture and design she grew up around.

Pamela Smilow grew up surrounded by art.  Her father was a modern furniture designer, sculptor and painter.  She was raised in a unique cooperative community founded by Frank Lloyd Wright, where all the modern homes were integrated into their natural surroundings.  New York City, with its myriad museums and cultural opportunities, was her backyard.  From a very early age, she knew that she wanted to be an artist. Although primarily self-taught in art, Pam did attend the University of Michigan (B.A., 1978) and spent one year studying ceramics at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Aix-en-Provence, France.  She had her first one-woman show in Ann Arbor, Michigan when she was twenty-one and has continued to paint and exhibit ever since throughout the world, including exhibitions in Spain, France, Denmark and Japan. Her paintings are full of life, color and child-like primitivism.  No surprise, since she draws on childhood experiences and memories for her vocabulary of symbols.  Her work grows out of abstract expressionism but has a variety of other eclectic influences. Her interest in language brought her to Europe during the 1980’s and 90’s and she spent quite a few years living and painting there.  This added a new Mediterranean and Nordic perspective to her work.   Pamela met her husband, Danish artist Gert Mathiesen, in the late 1980’s and thus began a collaboration that lasted for many years. She works in a variety of different media including clay, printmaking, collage and painting.  She also writes a popular weekly inspirational blog entitled “Things We Love.” Smilow’s work can be found in many private and corporate collections throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Dynamic and outspoken Michelin Star chef Drew Deckman continually strives to run a zero-kilometer, sustainable, community-based restaurant, Deckman’s en el Mogor, with a kitchen that is completely outside and is solely fueled by wood and natural elements, and where the majority of ingredients come from the ranch or nearby sea. His food is a combination of intricately composed plates and rustic elegant dishes. The guiding force of Chef Drew is sustainability. Sometime in the mid-80s, Chef Cody Requejo had his first sushi meal experience. What followed was an obsession that has turned into a full-fledged career for the past 3 decades. At 18, he quit a college culinary program and knocked on his favorite sushi joint’s backdoor hoping for an opportunity. An apprenticeship was offered and immediately he accepted. For several years he honed his skills, learned the ins and outs of Japanese restaurant culture, fish selection, and butchery, and eventually made his way behind the sushi bar. From there his career continued to grow, and in 2002 he opened his first restaurant, Tuna Town in downtown Huntington Beach, CA. There, he met Van Vu, who would later become his wife and business partner. In 2012, Chef Cody and Van invested in Roe Seafood and Fish Market in Long Beach, California, where Chef Cody’s passion for sustainable aquaculture began, as wild capture was expensive and difficult to source. In 2016, a new form of distribution was created that incorporated telling the story of sustainable aquaculture products coming out of Baja. Now, Chef Cody works for the Baja Kanpachi farm, Omega Azul, as their chef, brand ambassador, and sales strategist. He also recently opened FIISH in Culver City with his friend Chef Colin Whitbred. The pair share a passion for sushi, sustainable aquaculture, and sourcing local fish whenever they can.

Chef Martin San Roman brings a vast array of international culinary experience and creativity to his craft. Born in Mexico City, he graduated from L’Ecole Lenôtre in Paris, France. His experience in Fauchon and Le Meridien Hotels in Paris, the London Hilton, and the San Diego Westgate led him to his role as chef-owner of Tour de France and Rincon San Roman, both in Tijuana, Mexico.

His cooking show with the Televisa Network ran for eight years with a strong following on both sides of the U.S. – Mexico border. San Roman has traveled the world representing Mexican classic and modern cuisine in Belgium, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, England, France, Germany, Guatemala, Japan, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States, and he has received more than 250 awards from 12 different countries.

He was head chef in charge of gala dinners for the Mexican Presidency at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, a member of the Mexico Culinary team in the “Bocuse d’Or” World Cuisine Contest, known as the “World Cup of Cooking Competitions,” Guest Chef Instructor for the European Commonwealth chefs in Brussels, Belgium, and team adviser for the Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany. Chef San Roman is a member of Mexico’s Vatel Club; Academie Culinaire de France; Societe des Cuisiniers de Paris, and the American Culinary Federation. Chef Iker Turcott is a graduate from “Universidad del Caribe” in Cancún Quintana Roo, with a degree in culinary arts.

He made his way in the world of gastronomy, working in different restaurants in Cancún and in other parts of México. He had the opportunity of making internships in Valencia, Spain, at the restaurant “La Sucursal” a two Michelin starred restaurant.  He also became head chef at the restaurant “La Cuizine” in Paris, France.

Upon his return to Mexico, he made the decision to dedicate his life to the arts of wine.

Iker arrived in the city of Ensenada, Baja California in June 2012, with the desire to learn how to make wine and thus, developed his own brand of wine.

He entered “La Estación de Oficios Porvenir” where under the tutelage of one of the best winemakers in the country, he learned about this beautiful art of wine making. At the same time, he worked as a sommelier at the renowned Mexican winery L.A. Cetto. He also graduated as a sommelier from Culinary Art School Tijuana.

Today he is the winemaker and owner of “Vinos Terra Turcott” and also chef-owner of “La Doble T, Cocina Sabrosa” in Valle de Guadalupe.

 

Born in Mexico City to Japanese parents, Chef Marcelo Hisaki grew up surrounded by a diversity of flavor, texture, color, and tradition that combined both Japanese and Mexican culinary heritage.

At an early age, his talent and discipline led him to earn a scholarship from Fondation Turquois Monaco to study French cuisine at the Lycée Hotelier de Monte Carlo and train in Michelin-starred restaurants Yoshi and Joël Robuchon, in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

In 2013, Chef Marcelo and his wife Chef Reyna Venegas opened Restaurante Amores in Tecate, Baja California. Their culinary concept is influenced by Mexican, Japanese and French cultures, using local produce with respect, love, and creativity.

He recently represented Mexico in the Bocuse d’Or Finale 2023, a prestigious culinary contest in Lyon, France, receiving the social commitment award as a recognition to his team’s involvement in support of migrants’ food insecurity in Baja California. Read more here.

Executive Chef Reyna Venegas prepares fresh and delicious food that energizes, inspires, and nourishes guests. She fuses the culinary and cultural heritages of her own Northern Baja roots with the nutritious “spa cuisine” pioneered 80 years ago by Rancho La Puerta co-founder Deborah Szekely. At La Cocina Que Canta, “The Kitchen That Sings,” Chef Reyna teaches healthy eating as a celebration of life in farm-to-table cooking classes.

As a lifelong learner, Chef Reyna attends the University of California, San Diego’s Integrative Nutrition program, which focuses on how food promotes wellness.

She is also a graduate of the Culinary Art School in Tijuana, and holds a Pastry Degree from the Lycée Technique et Hôtelier de Monte-Carlo and Fondation Turquois.

She recently collaborated as manager of Team Mexico on their way to the Bocuse d’Or Finale 2023, ensuring the return of Mexico to the prestigious contest after 11 years.

Shelly Aronson manages comedy writers for television who have worked on The Big Bang Theory, The Neighborhood, Pivoting, B Positive, Stuck in the Middle and the original Murphy Brown and Night Court just to name a few.  She is a former Director of Comedy Development at Warner Bros, VP of 20th TV, and Director of Creative Affairs at HBO Independent Productions where she worked on the hit CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. In her ten years as a studio executive at three different studios, she worked on hundreds of comedy episodes and has a great understanding of how television shows are created and developed into a hit.  She also has taught Comedy Development for Television at UCLA Extension and is a graduate of UCLA with a B.A. in Theater Arts.

Nutritional Approaches for Prostate Health

Dr. William Aronson is a Professor in the UCLA Department of Urology at UCLA and Chief of Urology at the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center.  His research, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1992, led to the discovery of Viagra. He is funded by the National Cancer Institute to research the role of low fat diets, fish oil, green tea, and weight loss for prostate cancer prevention and treatment. He has published over 100 papers in the field of nutritional aspects of prostate disease and other prostate conditions. Dr. Aronson obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis.

Traveling with the iPhone
Travel is much more than simply seeing new things.  It is the desire to change our usual and comfortable perspectives of life.  It is a desire to grow in spirit.  These journeys all have gifts that we may not even be aware of until long after it’s over. And, when you travel to countries that are very unfamiliar, it pushes you off balance and forces you to be in the moment. One of the ways to capture these moments is by using a Smartphone.  It’s much less conspicuous and user friendly than the large cameras. Come join Karen through her travels in India using her iPhone. She will share her beautiful and images as she took many small groups of iPhone Photographers through India. You will be amazed at the quality of the imagery you can capture using an iPhone. Karen will also share her signature composite imagery and the apps she uses to create them.

The Fundamentals for Creative iPhone Photography
This week we will spend the first 20 minutes of each class learning basic new skills and the second part of each class we will go outside and practice. These classes are practical and hands-on and focus on having fun.  Students need an iPhone or an iPad, (sorry, no Androids). If you want to download Snapseed App, we can try to cover a little of this as well.  Be sure your phone is fully charged before each class or bring a back-up charger.

The First Class will cover basic iPhone photo settings and ways to shoot with the iPhone which includes focus, exposure, and playing with perspectives and angles to create more interesting photos.

The Second Class will cover shooting Portraits and Pano mode and then practice outside, shooting landscapes, our friends, flowers and how to create more abstract imagery.

The Third Class will cover filters and two formats, 4:3 and 16:9. as well as briefly showing you additional apps you may download and play with in the future.

Armed with an iPhone and an imagination, Karen Divine creates surrealistic scenes crafted through her photographs and illustrations. She brings to life a world of color, symbolism, and imagination that are often reflections of her own personal experiences.

In her presentation, Karen will share with you the beautiful imagery you can capture using your iPhone as she takes you on her travel journeys to India. In addition, she will share with you the creative, multi-layered imagery she is best known for using the iPhone and iPad. It’s an exciting visual presentation of storytelling, travel photography and portraits.

In the early 70’s she was invited to NYC to pursue modeling as it seemed like a potentially good source of income but within six months, she realized that the idea of creating the image was far more exciting. She returned to Boston, bought a Nikon Camera with her savings, and signed up for a darkroom class. Over the next 40 years she studied painting, drawing, woodworking, ceramics, and photography. In 2010 she transferred her skills of compositing imagery from Photoshop to various apps on the iPhone.

Karen has won numerous International Photography Awards and has been in galleries all over the world. She has been at the forefront of the Mobile Photography world since 2010, speaking at MacWorld, teaching at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, Maine Media Workshops, Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, Co., as well as taking groups to India using the iPhone. Her first self-published book, A Small Amount of Courage, has won several awards for Inspiration. It is a book of 64 iPhone Composited images each based on her personal interpretation of the iChing. From Life Transition to Life Transformation

Are you facing an anticipated or unexpected ending, beginning, or loss? Is your identity shifting, falling away, or emerging? Does hope, faith, meaning, or purpose elude you? Major life transitions are often painful, anxious, or disorienting times. They also offer a doorway to healing, personal growth, and spiritual maturation. This program will explore the landscape of life transitions, the fertile soil they offer for transformation and growth, and how to embrace their unbidden gifts.

Entering the Threshold of a Life Transition
During a life transition we journey from the known to the unknown. We may be unable to see the way forward. This session will recognize transition as a potentially transformational threshold to navigate through on a personal spiritual path. We will also use story and metaphor to explore nature as a potent source of spiritual wisdom and guidance for responding to transitions.

Being in the Threshold: Listening Within for the Way Forward
When life as we have known it is disrupted, we are often quick to seek safety in a strategy or action plan that alleviates discomfort or fear. This session will address the wisdom of non-action during transitions – of waiting, listening within, and practicing receptivity in order to potentiate transformation. The art of discernment will be differentiated from decision-making as a tool for moving forward.

Loss, Grief, and Life Transitions
A visceral experience of loss and grief often accompanies a major life transition, especially a significant ending like divorce, illness or aging, or bereavement. Transitions that seem less significant can still evoke painful feelings. This session will identify the nature of grief, types of grief that might arise during a life transition, compassionate ways of being with our grief, and the special role of ritual and remembrance practices in grieving.

From Life Transition to Self-Transformation
Life transitions repeatedly invite us to consider and respond to central questions in the spiritual life: Who am I? Who will I become? How will I live? This final session will emphasize the centrality of self-surrender in transitions that become transformational. We will also discuss the intentional cultivation of key spiritual traits that allow us to respond to transitions with fuller grace for a fuller life.

Stephanie Ludwig, PhD, MDiv, is a recognized spiritual guide, educator, subject matter expert, and leader specializing in loss, grief, life transitions, and spiritual transformation.
