Weight Stigma and Your Wellbeing
Weight stigma is the experience of perceiving negative attitudes from others as the result of your weight. The experience of feeling stigmatized due to body size has been associated with adverse effects on both physical and mental health. In this session we will address some pervasive myths about weight/BMI and health; learn about weight stigma in the medical field and how it can affect your care; examine the role of culture and social media in perpetuating internalized weight stigma; learn about weight-inclusive approaches to health; and discover practical things you can do to change the culture and conversation around body size within your own family to safeguard yourself and your children from the impacts of weight stigma. Oakland resident Ruth Davies has lent her fluid, expressive upright bass stylings to many internationally touring artists. Karen Follingstad has been Professor of Piano at San Diego State University and has also taught at Kent State University, the University of Akron, and was artist faculty at the Kent-Blossom Music Festival from 1992-94, where she coached chamber music and performed with principal members of the Cleveland Orchestra.  As a solo recitalist, Dr. Follingstad has performed extensively throughout Europe and North America and has recorded for the Hessische Rundfunk and the Norwegian Radio. She has also performed recitals with cellists Yo Yo Ma and Carter Brey, violinists Andrés Cárdenes, William Preucil, Cho-Laing Lin, Eugene Fodor, and others. Ms. Follingstad has also participated in numerous prestigious music festivals.

 

Cellist Joanna Morrison completed her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music Degrees at Boston University.  In 2007 Ms. Morrison won a position in the Honolulu Symphony and served as principal cello of the Hawaii Symphony from 2012 to 2015.  Concert tours have taken Ms. Morrison to Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea as well as much of Europe and the United States performing under conductors including Zubin Mehta, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Leonard Slatkin, David Zinman and Manfred Honeck.  Joanna was an acting member of the San Diego Symphony from 2016-2020.  An avid chamber player, Ms. Morrison has collaborated with various artists and has studied under members of the Guarneri and Juilliard Quartets. She has received fellowships to summer festivals around the world including Verbier Festival where she served as principal cellist for the world tour with Charles Dutoit and Martha Argerich.

Martha Aarons’ professional career began with her appointment as principal flute of the North Carolina Symphony. Subsequently she played with the Cleveland Orchestra for 25 years.  After becoming a freelancer, she performed often with the Philadelphia Orchestra. During this time, she appeared as guest principal flute with the Metropolitan Opera, Minnesota Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, and Mostly Mozart Festival. Ms. Aarons served as Artist Faculty with the Aspen Music Festival for 19 years. Her teaching credits include the Cleveland Institute of Music, Duke University, University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill, Oberlin College, Skidmore College, Shanghai Conservatory and Eastman School of Music. She has been soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony, Ohio Chamber Orchestra, and with the Aspen Festival Chamber and Festival orchestras. Her first solo CD, The History of the Tango, is recorded on the Azica label and additionally features pianist Frances Renzi and Grammy-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux.  Her newest release is the CD Last Silence with violinist Lev Polyakin and pianist Frances Renzi.  Martha is also an avid runner and has qualified for her fourth consecutive Boston Marathon in April 2024!

Lev Polyakin was appointed co-concertmaster of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra at age 21. In that position he was regularly featured as soloist. In the U.S. he served as assistant concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra, as well as concertmaster of the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen Music Festival. Lev has won several prizes in international violin competitions, including the Beethoven Prize in Carl Flesch in London, and Gold Medal and Special Prize in Brescia, Italy. In addition to solo performances with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, he has appeared as soloist with the London Mozart Players, Royal Philharmonic, and Cleveland Orchestra. Recording credits include Melodia, BBC, National Public Radio, and Decca. He is prominently featured on an album entitled Cafe Music comprising chamber music by Paul Schoenfield, which was nominated for a Grammy.  Lev has a special interest in jazz and has recorded three CDs, entitled Russian Blue, The Other Side of the Road, and Christmas Kaleidoscope.  He is also featured in the recent release by Azica Records entitled Last Silence, with flutist Martha Aarons and pianist Frances Renzi.

Welcome to Rancho La Puerta! Tales of Laughter, Wonder, and Wanderings…
Our week starts off with master storyteller Joel ben Izzy, a favorite of Ranch guests, who has spent the past four decades traveling the globe, gathering and telling stories – from Tel Aviv to Tokyo, Managua to Marrakesh, and Paris to Petra.

He blends traditional folktales he collects with tales from his travels for a wild blend of stories, “all of which are true – and some of which actually happened.” While there’s no telling just what tales he’ll be spinning tonight in Oaktree, you can be sure they’ll leave you laughing and a little wiser, getting your journey at Rancho la Puerta off on the right foot.

Finding and Telling Our Stories – Open to All Guests

Each of us is rich in stories – when we find the time and place to tell them. Luckily, Rancho la Puerta is the perfect place and this week is the perfect time. Through fun, participatory exercises and stories, Joel will lead us on a relaxed, low-key journey to discover and tell our own stories. While each day builds on the others, come for any and all three sessions – you’ll come away with rich with stories you did not know you knew.

Tales of Turning Points, Dreams, and Adventures
The teen-age years are overflowing with stories, and this teens-only program is a chance to get together with other teens and share those stories – funny tales, scary tales, and encounters with wonder. In this this fun and highly participatory workshop, teens will discover the secrets behind telling a great story as they discover and tell tales from their own lives and get to know some of the remarkable teens who come to Rancho la Puerta.

It was back in 1983, after studying English, Creative Writing, and Storytelling at Stanford, that Joel ben Izzy set off to travel the globe, gathering and telling stories.  Since that time, he has taught and told stories in some 36 countries around the world. Joel has also produced six award-winning recordings of his stories and is the author of The Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness (Alogonquin, 2003), which recounts his own remarkable journey of healing, and has now been translated into 18 languages. Joel will be telling stories in Oaktree as part of an evening program and, over the course of the week, will lead a class to help Ranch guests discover the stories in their own lives. In addition to Joel’s performing, teaching, recording, and writing, he is one of America’s most sought-after story coaches, with clients ranging from technology companies to foundations to Pixar Animation. They are in demand as speakers for professional photographic organizations and are professional members of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. Their expertise includes landscape, macro and wildlife photography, and their background in commercial work gives them added insight into all forms and aspects of light.

This is a program of popular songs composed and sung by José Alfredo Jiménez, one of the great Mexican singers who died fifty years ago. Elena Durán and Edgar Ibarra  have raised this beautiful music to the level of chamber music in order to bring it to a wider audience. They have been invited to present this program at the prestigious Cervantino Festival in October in Guanajuato, Mexico, in its 51st edition, one of the most important and largest performing arts event in Latin American.

Elena Durán grew up in Oakland, California and has enjoyed an international career, appearing as soloist with more than 50 orchestras all over the world, playing on a number of occasions for the Queen of England, HM King Charles as well as the President of Mexico. She has recorded a hit single with Paul McCartney and has made two albums with jazz great Stephane Grappelli. At various stages of her career, she has taught at University and Conservatory level including at Stanford University, the London College of Music, the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Hartt School of Music. She has given masterclasses and courses all over the world and was the director of the Stratford International Flute Festival for twenty years and the Mexican Flute Festival at UNAM for five years in the nineties. She was named Mexico City’s Ambassador of Culture and Tourism, and with her personal outreach program FLAUTA SIN FRONTERAS, she has taken music to those who can’t attend concerts, especially those in prison and those who live along the US/Mexico Border. Elena is a passionate supporter of the Ranch’s Fundación La Puerta bringing her programs to the local community.

 

Born in Mexico, Edgar Ibarra studied with the distinguished teacher Arnoldo Paredes Cuesta. In addition to classical music, he has a special interest in Jazz and in 2009 won the Fine Arts Award – Jazz Piano from the Interlochen Center for the Arts, in Michigan.  In 2007 he started the group Jazz Subtilior with whom he has performed on different stages in Mexico.  With his Edgar Ibarra Jazz Trio he has performed in several halls in Mexico as well.  With renowned flutist Elena Durán, Edgar has performed many recitals, both Classical and Jazz.  During 2016 and 2017 he was a beneficiary of the Bellas Artes Opera Studio, Fonca-INBA, where he was selected to participate in the Festival of the Egean, in Syros, Greece, conducting Mozart’s Don Giovanni and performing in several recitals. Duo Mundi George & Guli thrills audiences around the world with their exciting, innovative, diverse, and intimate programming style. They explore music for both one piano four hands and two piano four hands in the standard and contemporary repertoire as well as commissioned new works by national and international composers. Lauded as “…breathing the same artistic air…” with an adrenaline of communication that captivates audiences of every generation, Duo Mundi George & Guli creates beautifully synchronized performances that engage both the eye and ear in a dance of emotions. Since their inception in 2018, Duo Mundi G&G have given standing room only performances of Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story for the centenary celebration of the composer’s birth and their two-piano program “Immigration and Opportunity” with works by composers inspired by or writing in foreign lands. Recently they were invited to perform and give master classes throughout the US including venues in New York City, Kansas, Colorado, California, Texas, Florida, and Oklahoma. In their 2022-2023 concert season, they performed in Mexico and premiered their four-hand arrangement of Chinese composer Shi Fu’s Tajik Drum Dance at the 44th International European Piano Teachers’ Association Conference in Portugal. Their upcoming recording projects include Music of the Americas, music written for and/or inspired by children, and a series of newly commissioned and rarely performed works. Duo Mundi G&G have an exciting 2023-2024 concert season with upcoming performances and tours in New England, the Northwest, Florida, North Carolina, the Bay Area, Colorado, Texas, and Mexico. The Robert Beckwith Artist-in-Residence at Bowdoin College, George Lopez, has been a dynamic performer, sought-after pedagogue, and engaging lecturer for over 30 years. Known for his “…kaleidoscopic colors and clarity of conception…” (LA Times) in the standard repertoire as well as being a champion of newly written works, his debut at the renowned Concertgebouw in Amsterdam was lauded as “… authentic and memorable …” by the Nederlands Dagblad for his interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations along with all Twenty-Four Preludes of Chopin. He performed worldwide as a soloist in major cities throughout Europe, Australia, Japan, Mexico, Central and South America.  George’s extensive performances covers most major U.S. cities, including New York’s Lincoln Center, Merkin Hall, and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie, Paul Hall at the Juilliard School, Benaroya Hall in Seattle, Ambassador Hall in Los Angeles, the Shao Lin Arts Center in Rockport (Massachusetts), The Cleveland Art Museum, Harvard University, and Tanglewood.  After his performance at Lincoln Center, the composer Lowell Liebermann described the performance of his work as “…exciting and decisive!”  A featured soloist at many international music festivals throughout Europe and abroad, Mr. Lopez performed at the renowned Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Girona Internacional Festival de Música in Spain, the Kowmung Festival just outside Sydney, Festivale d’Internazionale Solisti e Musica da Camera in Umbria (Italy), and the renowned Latin-American music festival Cubadisco in Havana (Cuba). Gulimina Mahamuti is the first Uyghur from China to receive a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the U.S.  She made her Carnegie debut in New York City at Weill Recital Hall and has performed internationally in Montreal, Copenhagen, Istanbul, Budapest (at the invitation of the Turkish Ambassador), and across the U.S. and China, broadcasting on these nations’ radio and TV programs. She has performed piano concerti with the Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra, Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, and Harbin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, and was featured on the radio in San Francisco, Queens College/CUNY podcast, China Touch Radio, and Istanbul Technical University Radio.

Happily, there are practical ways to improve confidence, success, and health through small changes without sacrificing enjoyment. You don’t have to kill yourself to save your life!

Do you often feel that stress depletes your health, vitality, and health? Do you believe that stress is negative and should be avoided? Or do you view stress as positive- something that enhances your health, growth, and performance? It turns out that our beliefs about stress (our “mindsets”) may be more powerful in shaping our health, than stress itself. Rather than just managing stress, learn how to shift mindset to embrace and utilize stress as something helpful.

Rx Healthy Sex: Is Sex Good Medicine? – Friday 2 pm Olmeca Gym
Sexuality is central to human well-being, but most of medicine is focused on sexual dysfunction and health risks of sexual activity. But can enjoying the pleasures of sex have benefits for health and well-being? Is good sex good for you? We will explore the scientific evidence that sexual activity can increase longevity, lower heart disease risk, reduce prostate cancer, reduced vaginal atrophy, burn calories, improve marital satisfaction, support successful aging, reduce stress and even stop headaches. We will also consider if sex be prescribed and how can sexual satisfaction be enhanced.

Sobel, MD, MPH, is Adjunct Lecturer, Department of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, and Visiting Scholar at Stanford’s Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences (CASBS). He was Director of Patient Education and Health Promotion for Kaiser Permanente Northern California which serves over 4 million members and practiced adult primary care medicine.   Dr. Sobel completed a Bachelor’s degree in psychology (University of Michigan), medical education (University of California San Francisco), medical internship (Presbyterian Hospital-Pacific Medical Center), Masters in Public Health and a residency program in General Preventive Medicine (UC Berkeley). His research and teaching interests include medical self-care, patient education, preventive medicine, behavioral medicine and psychosocial factors in health. He has written ten books: including The Healing Brain, Healthy Pleasures, The Mind & Body Health Handbook, Ways of Health: Holistic Approaches to Ancient and Contemporary Medicine, and Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.  Dr. Sobel’s more than 200 television appearances to educate the public about health issues include the Today Show, CNN, Hour Magazine, and a television news segment on an ABC news affiliate station in San Jose. Come and travel vicariously as Suzanne tells us what she learned along the way about the places, people, horses, and of course the elusive Monarchs she met along the way.

Transformation of an Urban Garden into a Wildlife, Sustainable Habitat
What happens if your newly purchased home doesn’t have your “dream” garden when you move in? That happened to me.  Ten years ago, I moved into a Victorian home in downtown Petaluma, California. with a dark back yard full of crabgrass, raging oxalis, deformed ornamental plum trees, and boxwood. Could I really convert this land into a sustainable and wildlife habitat with attractive, low-water use plants, drip irrigation, a 1500 gal. underground rainwater catchment system, and a grey-water system in a reasonable time and cost?   Suzanne Clarke will share some of her successes (and mistakes!) to convert her garden into a small urban oasis for native insects with color all year round and one that directs its rainwater to slow down, spread out, before sinking into the ground for future use.

My Life in Zimbabwe
April 1980 – January 1985 — Rhodesia becomes Zimbabwe. Suzanne Clarke with her two young sons accompanies her husband, Jonathan, a British diplomat, into an environment fresh from civil war. Suzanne will give you a flavor of her family’s life during their five years in this new democracy. She will explain her role in the creation of the Greendale Community Center with its preschool, adult literacy classes, and women’s club for its indigenous citizens. This Community Center is still around today — 40 years later.

Suzanne Clarke has been a gardener all of her life, beginning when she first helped her grandmother pick peonies for the cemetery for Memorial Day when she was a youngster. She has lived and gardened with her husband and three children in Germany, Taiwan, England, Zimbabwe, as well as on both the east and west coasts of the United States.

Suzanne lived in the Washington, DC area for over 30 years where she was an elementary school teacher. Suzanne started each school year by harvesting Monarch eggs and caterpillars from the milkweed found in her garden for her pupils to observe and marvel all of the stages of metamorphosis. Suzanne’s gardens in Washington, DC and in St. Michaels, Maryland were “Way Stations” for Monarch Watch. Her garden is in Petaluma is now a Monarch Way Station.

In 2008, Suzanne became a Master Gardener in Maryland, specializing in wildlife habitat; Integrated Pest Management; and Storm-water management.

After moving to Petaluma, California, in Sonoma County, in 2012, Suzanne took the training again to become a Master Gardener. Again, Suzanne’s main passion is to share her passion for saving habitats for butterflies and other pollinators. Suzanne has been “fostering” butterflies and monitoring the flight of Monarchs for Monarch Watch for twenty years. She is a member of the Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count for the Xerces Society.

Sara Polczynski is the owner/Culinary Artisan for Seasoned Plates, a full service Catering company in San Diego specializing in bringing bold flavors, bright colors, local freshness and a custom culinary experience to each and every client. Sara has been a part of the San Diego culinary scene for over 25 years. Her story has many chapters. In the mid 90’s, as a Chef graduate of the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, Sara left to train at the renowned Manele Bay Hotel in Lanai, HI and The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, CO. Upon her return to her native San Diego, Sara was hired as the Corporate Pastry Chef for the Cohn Restaurant Group, running the pastry department for multiple restaurant concepts.

Sara’s love for teaching on the job led to a part time career of teaching in the classroom. A culinary educator since 1999, Sara currently holds the position of Associate Professor for the Baking and Culinary Arts programs for San Diego Community College – Continuing Education. It is the largest vocational training program of it’s kind in the US.

Over the years Sara’s love for cooking began to expand along with her love of travel. Inspired by the family food stories of her Mexican kitchen colleagues and the early teachings of Rick Bayless on his PBS television series, an opportunity arose that changed her career path and life forever and helped shape the style and flavor profile of her cuisine. It was the beginning of an annual journey to travel and learn about regional Mexican cuisine, art and culture with influential chef mentors including Rick Bayless, Ricardo Munoz and Susana Trilling.  Always trying to be connected to the rich culture and foods of Mexico has afforded her the opportunity to teach hands on cooking classes at the world renowned Rancho La Puerta in Tecate, MX, utilizing fresh produce grown on their on-site organic farm. www.seasonedplates.com

Executive Chef Reyna Venegas prepares fresh and delicious food that energizes, inspires, and nourishes guests. She fuses the culinary and cultural heritages of her own Northern Baja roots with the nutritious “spa cuisine” pioneered 80 years ago by Rancho La Puerta co-founder Deborah Szekely. At La Cocina Que Canta, “The Kitchen That Sings,” Chef Reyna teaches healthy eating as a celebration of life in farm-to-table cooking classes.

As a lifelong learner, Chef Reyna graduated from University of California, San Diego’s Integrative Nutrition program, which focuses on how food promotes wellness. She is also a graduate of the Culinary Art School in Tijuana, and holds a Pastry Degree from the Lycée Technique et Hôtelier de Monte-Carlo and Fondation Turquois.

She and her husband Chef Marcelo Hisaki own Restaurante Amores, a hidden culinary jewel in the heart of Baja and currently collaborates as manager of Team Mexico on their way to the Bocuse d’Or Americas 2024.
